I've recently got into D&D and have had a ton of fun. I’m rerolling a Life Domain Cleric, but am very confused by the Prepared Spells concept.
My understanding is that I have 5 Prepared Spell slots (Lv. 1 + 4 WIS modifier), but being Lv. 1, I'm only allowed to choose two Level 1 Spells. So my question is this: for Prepared Spell slots, are they 5 extra spells IN ADDITION to the 2 spell slots? Or, am I capped at just two spells, which I can then Prepare?
I know that Life Clerics are given Cure Wounds and Blessing as always prepared. So, if the answer is former, that would give me a total of 9 usable spells. (7 prepared + 2 slots.)
For a 1st level Cleric, with an 18 Wis (+4) this is what you get:
3 Cantrips (you didn't mention them, so they are here for completeness)
2 Always prepared 1st level spells based on your domain
5 Prepared spells at 1st level. These can be any spell on the Cleric spell list, but you would not choose the same spells as #2. There are 17 different spells to choose from.
You MIGHT have additional cantrips based on Domain.
You can cast 2 spells of 1st level from that list of 5+2
So in the 1st level cleric, every morning (really after a long rest) you prepare 5 spells (from #3) of your choice from the 17 available that morning you also have the 2 always prepared spells. During the day, you can cast 2 1st level spell from the combination of #2 and #3. The net is you can cast two spells out of a possible list of seven for the day. And the next morning you can switch out the list.
When you hit Cleric 3, you would get your first 2nd level slot. you then have from the list of 35 spells, 7 you can choose from either 1st or 2nd level spells, and you also have 4 spells that are always prepared, 2 at 1st spell level and 2 and 2nd spell level for a total of 11 spells out of 35 ready for the day, and you have 4 1st level slots and 2 2nd level slots to use. And again, this ignores the 3 cantrips.
You don't have 35 spells, you have 35 you can prepare from. You have to click "prepare" next to spells on your add list to prep any spells not on your Life domain list.

Hi all,
I've recently got into D&D and have had a ton of fun. I’m rerolling a Life Domain Cleric, but am very confused by the Prepared Spells concept.

And again, this ignores the 3 cantrips.
Hope that helps.
1. Your domain grants you 2 spells you have always prepared.
2. You can additionally prepare 5 spells of your choosing.
3. You can cast only 2 spells from the list of prepared ones.
4. You know 3 cantrips and can cast them numerous times.
Just saying, I have SO many spells. I am using life domain, and am at level 3. I have 35 spells. Did I do something wrong?
Nope. See my above post. You have a lot of options, but are still limited per long rest what you can cast.
You don't have 35 spells, you have 35 you can prepare from. You have to click "prepare" next to spells on your add list to prep any spells not on your Life domain list.
