starting my 2nd ever campaign (waterdeep) and decided to go monk! any tips and tricks i should look out for? She is a wood elf with the Charleton background....i flirty monk isnt quiet the norm but think im going to have some fun with it!
Focus on maxing out your DEX and WIS. You'll generally want to make CON your 3rd highest ability, but you can also make STR your 3rd highest if you want better jumping and athletics (which can be useful in an urban setting for climbing and jumping from rooftop to rooftop.)
Since you'll want to invest in 3 ability scores and monks don't get extra Ability Score Improvements like fighters or rogues, most feats aren't worth it, but there are a few stand-outs. Mobile can be very useful since it both helps you reach enemies and lets you stay out of melee range. Elven Accuracy is also a strong choice since you can stun enemies.
Cool thanks for the tips! mobile has crossed my mind. my STR ability is currently -1 mod haha! but my WIS and DEX are my highest. ill have a look at Elven Accuracy now, cant say iv seen it, but i am fairly new hehe
Monks tend to be more delicate than other melee characters are. They're similar to rogues. Focus on getting into combat and then getting back out instead of standing toe to toe with your opponents unless you're using Ki points to Dodge. Pay close attention to how fast your monk can move! You're able to use a Ki point to "disengage" past the front line of your opponents to get to the more delicate back line. Just don't get yourself trapped when you do that because the rest of your party won't be able to get to you easily.
I can't recommend one tradition over the others because they're all fun depending on how you want to play your monk. I've played Way of the Open Hand and Way of Shadow and I had great fun with both of them. In my experience, my dexterity was more important than my wisdom. The only exception to that is when you're using the Stunning Strike ability because your wisdom modifier is used for the save for monk abilities.
Elven Accuracy is real nice for monks. ((sadly my monk was a tabaxi...)) But Mobile is GREAT as in you never have to spend a ki to disengage from a monster you attacked.
With your strength where it is ((mine was -1 too)) just ignore it and focus on the Dex and Wisdom. If your doing waterdeep heist then go with the subclass that gives good utility. It is not a combat heavy adventure at all. ((Shadow comes to mind tbh))
But welcome to the world of Monks! And right when you end the Adventure at 5 the class starts getting fun!
awesome thanks guys :) having a look i think mobile and way of shadow is where im heading. i like the idea of being stealthy and mis directing the enemy over combating them
I'm doing my first monk too, and decided to go Way of the Shadow. I weighed up what the others in the party were doing, and how I could be of help to the party. (Now got up to Lvl 3 so chose Way of the Shadow), as I can use some stealth to try and sneak around (being a Halfling helps), and I can spend some Ki if required to use dark vision etc.
It's definitely a different style to my last character which is a Human Fighter (oh how cliché)
