Since some backgrounds are not existing I stumbled on the situation where I would want to add certain proficiencies (skill, tool, language) manually to a character. Not only for the background, but sometimes you want to add some homebrew proficiencies. Is this possible in any way?
For example, i want a hermit character background, so i want to add 2 skill proficiencies from the predefined list, as well as a tool proficiency. Next to that i also want to add an extra language (which i might add to the notes section, but i feel a nice editable overview of languages would come in handy)
Most other stuff is quite customizable, but either i'm missing how to change these, or it would be a nice addition to make these customizable as well.
currently, during beta, the homebrew solution is limited to creating items, monsters & spells, but in future, this will increase to allow homebrew of other areas of other rules. Things like subclasses, backgrounds etc.
The backgrounds you mention as not existing are in the Player's Handbook and can be accessed on release by purchasing that book on D&D Beyond.
Can we get an update on this? I am trying to add a skill to one of my player's characters who spent downtime to become proficient in it. I'm not seeing a way to do so.
I know that this is just a workaround, but to add a proficiency outside the normal progression of a character, you can homebrew an item (a ring for example) which gives the character that proficiency you desire.
Adding proficiency to any insisting or home-brew skill is NEEDED. It should be open ended. Apply any modifier amount to a skill and have an area for notes, description and perhaps limitation or specific application.
Hello! I'm new to the site and to D&D, and I wanted to add my own version of this request.
I'm trying to create a Bard, but my bard is not a musical one at all - more of an Actor/Comedian - and I would like to create (I guess the word is "Homebrew") new "musical instruments" for me to create and that get added to the list of options of the three instruments I gain proficiency in when creating a character.
For example, one of my ideas is an ancient version of the non-electronic type of megaphone, known then as a "Speaking Trumpet."
Or even the butt-end of my Halberd, which I could just bang on the ground to create rhythm and/or noise.
Bumping this to see if there's been any further news - my character obtained a glaive during our campaign, but I am not proficient with it. I asked my DM if I could train to become proficient, so I'd love to be able to add on a weapon proficiency. For that matter, my whole party has been talking about training certain skills to become proficient in ones that we found out we all sucked in for the first part of this campaign, so being able to check a box that says "I trained really hard with an acrobatics instructor, so now I'm better at it" would be very nice for story purposes.
Adding another request to adding Homebrew or known proficiencies based on discussion with DM. We're playing West Marshes, so with all the downtime, many of us have trained in various skills with tools (weaving, leathercrafting, artificing) and we'd like to add that to the character sheet in the appropriate section, rather than in Notes.
My DM house-ruled that I am allowed to take a tool proficiency as one of my three "College of Lore" bonus proficiencies, so I am also interested to know when you will support the ad hoc addition of proficiencies to a character.
A workaround is to create a homebrew magic item that adds proficiency to the skill you want. I had to do this when my GM let me have warhammer proficiency with a Forge cleric.
Not sure what a bandore is, but you can add proficiencies, including custom ones, but clicking on the grey cog at the bottom right of the proficiencies box, and following the prompts in the sheet that appears.

Being able to select proficiencies without having to tie them to background seems like a standard practice. Please add!

Stormknight,
When can we expect to be able to add homebrewed proficiencies?
I know that this is just a workaround, but to add a proficiency outside the normal progression of a character, you can homebrew an item (a ring for example) which gives the character that proficiency you desire.
Of course, there is no need to publish this item.

Has there been any updates on this topic? Specifically adding languages.

OK seriously, haven't this been solved yet? Im trying to add bandore as a profficiency, but there is no way of doing that. =(
