Badeye or other developer, is there any plan to provide the desktop view to mobile devices? I much prefer the desktop view even on a smaller iPad. I’m 100% ok with being patient but it would be nice to know if there are plans to revisit desktop view for mobile. If the mobile view is all we’ll be getting for iPad, I’d just like to know so I can inform my group and help them to more effectively use the character sheets. I love the update and think it’s very handy and well put together but I’m sure it’s known that the desktop view is much more useful than the way the mobile is laid out. Thanks for all you do!
It took me a second to find all the stuff on my main character (and will be a slight learning curve for every class and multi-class), but wow. I have never seen an upgrade that was so much better in so many ways in pretty much any platform, ever. I was put off by the color scheme at first, but the functionality (on desktop, at least), is just so much better.
That being said, 1) It'd be cool to be able to adjust the color scheme. 2) It'd be cool to be able to set account-specific defaults for the HOME screen of character creation.
Boo on me if those are both already possible and I just haven't figured it out yet.
Unarmed Strike Description, there's a weird zero after To Hit and before Damage Type
Action Type:
1 Action
Attack Type:
Unarmed Strike
To Hit:
+2
0 <-- What's this?
Damage Type:
Bludgeoning
Stat:
STR
Range/Area:
5ft. Reach
Proficient:
Yes
It's a secondary "to hit" modifier. When you play on say Roll20 the sheet has what skill adds to hit (strength which would be the +2) then you can add an extra bonus (say +2 for Sacred Weapon) which would be the 0. This layout would make it easier to write a script to import characters from D&D Beyond into the Roll20 character sheet including any special "to hit" bonuses. Pretty cool actually.
While I like the new features, I really struggle with this Character Sheet format. I like the new features but I liked the old format much better.
Having played with the sheet now, I found that it made things harder at the table. The search bar was helpful in finding gear faster but it required my players to type. We play in my apartment and it's a small space. We don't have room for everyone to sit at the table and have a computer open. Primarily we use phones and Ipads. Typing on mobile devices because it slowed down session time. Also, the need to constantly navigate between tabs using a menu frustrated my players.
Something that would immediately help would be allowing users to swipe or scroll between the pages, instead of having to click the navigation bubble. I think it's safe to say that the smaller number of 'clicks' required to get to what we need, the more positive the system feels. With the current system there seems to be many steps (at least for mobile device users) required in order to make something happen.
I should probably add some context. My group and I are pretty new to this. We have very little experience dealing with character sheets and the like. Some of the people at the table find the character sheet confusing - it's full of boxes and sections and the writing on them is less clear and obvious. D&D Beyond, in it's old incarnation felt more familiar to us; it operated like other programs we are familiar with. It actually made getting into D&D easier for everyone. I'm going to assume that we will not have the option to choose our preferred layout but I'd really like that.
Maybe we just need a 'less hardcore' option because we are new.
This is a really good post that helped me better understand some of the sticking points people are having.
I think a couple things on the new sheet should help clear some of this up, one of the biggest being putting labels on top of the boxes instead of underneath them! I do like this idea of a "less hardcore" mode, though--something that still has the functionality of the new sheet, using its logic, but is organized in a more familiar manner for those who came to the game with DDB and really clicked with the old sheet. Even if there were just more theme/skinning options for the sheet--maybe one that makes the more well-defined boxes with clear, bold text headings organized in a similar manner as the old sheet. There are some things that I think definitely should not go back to the old ways--the "features" box was a clustercuss of collapsables that made it frankly impossible to find much of what you needed at any given time--but I think a "DDB Classic" (or whatever) theme could work. Obviously I don't know how the programming side of it works but it seems like that'd be pretty feasible. Would that help to address some of those concerns, do you think?
It also seems super clear at this point that the mobile version is a huge sticking point for folks, and, from what it seems to me, the main way that most of the folks who do not like the new sheet seem to engage with the sheet at the table. Hopefully the dev team can come up with a solution that works for folks!
I think you actually made my point clearer than I made it - which is great. I sometimes have a hard time getting my thoughts to the page. This post was very much appreciated. I think the idea of a 'DDB Classic' theme is sort of what I am after.
I really like D&D and I am having so much fun with this game. In all honesty, my group probably would not have remained together if we weren't using D&D Beyond though. Personally, I think one of the biggest barriers into the game is the way it's presented. I'm not trying to say that Character Sheets are stupid or anything like that - i'm sure that if you've been playing a while they are perfectly usable. I can say that as a person coming into the hobby though they are something quite unlike anything a lot of us have experienced.
For the exported char sheet Spell List, two requests:
1) can we please have the full spell list printed out instead of just the prepared spells. We're not going to print out a separate list every time we change our daily prepared spells - just easier to mark on the sheet which spells are prepared
2) in the notes section of each spell in the spell list, can we please have an abbreviated summary of what the spell does, focusing only on any in game mechanics. This will save endless flipping through the PHB for reasonably common spells.
Overall, this is a great enhancement, you've done a great job! Keep it up!
I'm sorry, but I just hate the new format. I can never find anything and I hate all the different buttons that hide the information. I really miss the old format

The PDF export does list all known spells (or the full spell list). If this is not happening for you, we'll need to dig into why it's not working for your character. I just looked on several of mine and it is working as intended.
The Notes section for the PDF will be populated with the Notes from the spell list on the digital sheet - we ran into a few issues making that happen for the first pass, but it's on the short list.

A "DDB Classic" theme is not feasible from either a technical or user interface standpoint.
While the technical challenges would be boring for me to talk about, the more relate-able thing is concerning the UI. We added so much entirely new functionality with this revamp that we couldn't really find a way to make that work in the old interface without it being too cumbersome. Think trying to fit another meal course onto an already full table.
One of our core tenets for DDB (we have it posted all over the place in our offices and talk about it on a daily basis) is "Be Accessible - We will empower beginners and enable veterans, anywhere, on any type of device." This is a major goal for us, but that does not mean it is easy (at all). We want to strike the balance between being what new and old players need and be usable on all the devices folks use today, and we will keep chasing that dream.
Since we will not be able to have a "classic" view, I encourage everyone to share feedback on what specifically you find challenging or less usable with the new format (instead of the generalization of "I don't like it"). That is something we can work with to make intentional changes in the name of that balance. For instance, the feedback you gave about swiping versus the floating nav button is really useful, and I'll share a general update in this thread in a little while that addresses where our thoughts are on that right now.
I ask for patience as we analyze the feedback. Change is hard for everyone, and the feedback we have received regarding where we are now with the sheet has been majorly positive. Of course we love to see that after all the hard work that has gone into it, but we truly do care about what people are sharing here and we will use it to improve.

First off, I really appreciate the feedback given in this thread. It's great to get confirmation that the new format is working so well for many of you, and it's great to be able to get feedback on challenges or frustrations from the broader community. Thanks!
I'll share a few things that are on our minds after sifting through everything. Keep in mind these are thoughts and intent at this point - not final decisions or executions.
On desktop, we're going to see about displaying a single box to the right (instead of two) to give the content a little more room to breathe.
We're going to see about getting AC and Initiative to display more prominently (and not just in the Combat section).
On that note, the Combat section is probably going away (in favor of a combined Actions section since AC and Initiative won't be there anyway).
With more room in the bigger content area, we'll display a full spell/ equipment list, with filters to shrink that list as needed.
We will try to resize the desktop view to be able to fit it into the smaller iPad Pro 10.5 in landscape.
On mobile, we're going to look into a way to bring back swiping between sections. The floating nav button will remain for quick jumping between the sections if desired.
Those are a few of the things I'm comfortable to talk about this early - we'll definitely keep an eye on all the feedback to make improvements.

The update sounds great! One thing is that I do like having spells organized by level like they are. And I love seeing spells that I can upcast, because you might not even realize that some spells CAN be upcast. I think an easy way to address this is having 2 additional tabs currently missing: an All tab, which shows all prepared spells, but no upcasts. And a rituals tab.

With regards to the (possible) resize, will this affect other tablets with a resolution over the target 1200 pixels width? For example the Samsung Tab S2 has a screen size of 2048x1536 (QXGA)
I really love the existence of the Actions tab! I've been using something similar I'd physically written out, so I'm very excited to have one less piece of paper to keep track of. My groups also play in very small apartment, and we have just enough space to seat everyone in the same room- but not enough room to have everyone sit in a chair at the table, so space is at a premium. I noticed that while spells with a casting time of a bonus action, or reaction, show up as a list under their respective headings, spells with a casting time of one action do not. I find swapping between the spells, combat, and actions tabs on mobile clunky, and there isn't a good/different way to sort spells by cast time. Would it be possible to add a list of 1-action cast time spells to the Actions header? I understand it might get cluttered for heavy casters, so maybe implementing a way to check off which spells a player wants shown would be best, like you can when designating a spell as an attack so it shows up on the combat page.
I love being able to click on a spell and having the description pop up while on the actions page, and it's a shame i can't do it with all my spells. It would also be nice to have the option of flagging custom actions with a "used/unused" box, like Hexblade's Curse. The Tabaxi ability Feline Agility is also missing a box like that.
I'd like to see a save button added to the "edit notes" pop-up box on mobile, along with a more intuitive way of exiting edit screens and notes, like adding a back or close option to the box. It's also frustrating to have the sheet bring me back to the first screen every time I switch from portrait to landscape. I'm also in favor of removing the button/menu to swap between screens, in favor of a tab system, or even a dropdown menu. I miss being able to swipe as well.
Overall, I'm really enjoying the new sheet, and I can't wait to see how you finalize the updates for mobile.
EDIT: Just found the save button for notes! Could it get added to customized items/actions/whatever too?

Since that is a retina display, the actual resolution when it comes to screen space divides that in half. So, that size tablet is actually a 1024 x 768.
We will see what we can do with tablets of that size, but it won't be the desktop view verbatim.

I actually have the opposite problem. Using just Chrome on an S7, I get the desktop view and I want the mobile view.

Any chance this could also be used for the desktop view if I use a window less than 1200px wide? I use DnD Beyond next to our VTT software (which needs more screen cause maps), and I usually use it at 1024xp wide, which now has a fixed 250px empty margin on the left side, technically wasting a quarter of the space. [edit]: And since it's fixed, even if I further decrease screen size to match the fixed width of the smaller sheet size, the margin is still there, meaning I have to juggle with a vertical scrollbar, which is again causing issues when the sidebar pops up after clicking on anywhere on the sheet.
On mobile, we're going to look into a way to bring back swiping between sections. The floating nav button will remain for quick jumping between the sections if desired.
...
...
If swiping between sections is brought back, an option in settings to turn it off or disable it would be nice. Three players use phones in our game for character sheet viewing. All 3 of them had problems on android and apple with accidentally swiping too far in the old format. Their number one like about the new system is swiping being replaced by the nav button.
So after a bit more time Tablet and phone version of the new character sheets are less bad (I still have issues) than the PC version.
But PC version unfortunately feels like a major downgrade. It feels very very awkward that it's a single page and I can't scroll down to obtain more information. Being forced to use a little box to contain - Combat/Actions/Spells/Equipment just does not feel like the right way to go for PC's. Same with the other small little box that contains - Features&Traits/Description/Notes/Class Features/Feats/Racial Traits. The previous version was better on the PC.
If you wanted to go for a "Character Sheet feel" on the PC, please please make the PC version closer to the EXPORTED PDF's where a character sheet is 3+ pages! Let us scroll down to our "Spell page", let us have a sheet that is focused on who we are (nice big character appearance art location, ALLIES & ORGANIZATIONS, Character traits, backstory, etc) . Expand each of those 2 little boxes to take up a whole PAGE and split up the info so it's not all so restricted into little boxes that I'm now forced to tab through.
Let me see ALL my spells at once and not be forced to select a casting level (Tablet and phone are better here).
I miss having the spell icons more predominantly displayed but that's fairly minor.
Okay so to help balance things out POSITIVES:
Love seeing the upgraded spell options with the bonuses highlighted in blue.
Love the change theme options.
The actions showing your combat now has better integration with spells or other custom attacks, yay!
Love that equipment has more details, it was very hard to tell which armor came with the stealth disadvantage before, for example. New sheet is much better about it.
Bug: Hunter's Mark does not show an increase in duration when cast at a higher level.

Check out all my important links here.
May we live in Less Interesting Times

We've stopped this OGL madness, but stay vigilant, they tried it once, they can try it again.
ACTIONS tab is great, but it's lack the Shove and Grapple actions.
Maybe option to represent skills by ability and not in alphabetical order in some future?
Bug: Hunter's Mark does not show an increase in duration when cast at a higher level.
