is there a way if we've bought the hardcover book to add to our dnd beyond account? Or do I have to buy the digital to have it unlocked and essentially buy each book twice to have both on here and in my hand?

Is is that a thing?
Hi Urban_Immortal o/
There is currently no way to validate physical purchases in DDB, as there is no exclusive code associated to each single copy of a book * . Therefore, yes, you would need to purchase the digital versions of the books here in DDB in order to have their content available here.
That being said, I'd like to correct a statement you (and many others) made: it does not mean "buying the book twice", for a number of simple reasons:
While the content might be the same, the integration with the tools and between books is something to be valued;
The price itself is already heavily discounted when compared to WotC suggested retail price, and with all the coupon codes available virtually always, the cost drops even further;
If you do not need the full content of, let's say, the PHB, but you only want a specific class option, you can buy just that, at a fraction of the price of the book, which will also be discounted from the overall price of buying the full content of the book here in DDB;
There is no strict need to buy anything, as you could, if willing to spend some time, recreate any official content (subclasses, races/subraces/variants, magic items, spells, monsters, feats, backgrounds) by using the Homebrew Tool freely provided by DDB, and you can share these homebrew official content with anyone who is in a campaign with you;
Lastly, I would also suggest, before buying anything, to give a spin at the tools themselves, like the character creator and the homebrew tools, as with the Basic Rules and the UA content you already have a good amount of material available to mess around with the website and see if you actually like it.
Hope this was useful.

Ahh Okies. Thank you
You could take the time to add everything in your books via the home red system as well you just wouldn't be able to publish it.
Coupon codes? What coupon codes? What's available?
This thread, for example :) they are basically discounts on single books or Legendary Bundle purchase.
