Simple answer? Nobody is making you buy anything. Nothing here is required to play. It's just another way to play.
I couldn't agree more here. If you already have the books, then this site was not built with your needs in mind. I dont have the books, so it perfect to my friends and I. Like firehawk said it's another way to play. In no way is it reasonable for us as consumers to expect DDB or Wizards to 'give' us all of the material just because we have purchased it another format.

I disagree here a bit. I have the books and have the content in Fantasy Grounds as well. I will probably purchase it for a 3rd (or 4th) time here. Why? I prefer reading physical books when preparing or researching. However, I like the idea of having a quick and easy way to look up information while at the table.
So, even though I already own the books, I still feel that this site is aimed at me as well.
Convenient access to your content all in one place. Consolidated info, so that you don't have to have three different monster books open at once to run an encounter. Good hyperlinking, reminds you of what certain things do (such as conditions). Also future features sound promising, like combat tracking and monster CR adjustment tools.

But you aren't forced into buying them, this is just personal choice. There are many people out there who will feel this site isn't for them, and that's perfectly okay. You are not required to use D&D Beyond in order to play D&D. That's not the focus of the site. We just want to make accessibility easier in a mobile world.
It's also great how when I bought the books of Lord of the Rings, they gave me the DVD of the films, the Blu-Rays of the film, AND Amazon and iTunes digital copies of the films as well!
I also bought Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and they gave me the vinyl, the CD, a cassette, an 8-Track, a DAT, AND copies of the Bee Gees movie along with it!
This is just how the world works these days... stuff released in different formats has its own licenses, its own rules, and its own price.

A confrontational moderator... that's a shocker.
I don't think that word means what you think it means. Instead of defending the site, giving you reasons you should buy the books and give Curse your money, I gave you an honest answer, and you think I'm being confrontational? What exactly do you want to hear?

Yeah, I know. I am not complaining about having to purchase the content again. I am simply saying that I feel that the site is also aimed at me, even though I already own the books and content on FG. It has a wider appeal than only people who do not own the books. I am fine with paying for the content again when it provides additional value... which this does.

Your answer is technically correct, but it is abrasive and confrontational. I think you should defend the site. It is worth defending. I mean, it provides value beyond the content. It is true that no one is forcing them to use the site and the site is not required to play. But, it is also true that the site provides value beyond that provided by only having the book and can streamline game play and prep work. Just sayin'

To be fair though, this question has been asked a bazillion times (or maybe just short of a bazillion) and no amount of defending the site, giving Curse credit for the work they have done, or explaining the fact that you are not buying the books but you are buying the developments teams time to put the books into a digital format for you has made anyone any happier. So they could copy and paste a generic answer into reply to us or, as Firehawk did here imho, they can give the quick and decisive answer. What she said was factual, and the tone you are inferring is subjective.

If I came off abrasive, I apologize. That's honestly not what I intended. The reason I said what I said is because we mods, even the Devs, understand that this site isn't going to be for everyone. We're here because we're passionate about this project. We want to see it succeed. But by telling people that they need to buy the books and they need a subscription we will only turn those people who have doubts to begin with off from the idea entirely. Yes, we'd like to see everyone using it. But that's not a realistic viewpoint, is it? Many people cannot afford to buy the books here. There are many people who can barely afford to buy the physical books. That's the downside of having an expensive hobby such as D&D. For the longest time, I couldn't afford the physical books, and had to borrow at face-to-face games, so I understand all too well that something like Beyond is expensive, and I consider it a luxury. It is not, and will never, be considered the only way to play D&D. Is it something I'll support? Absolutely! Will I defend it if someone asks 'why should I buy?' You better believe it! I'll give you reasons all day. But the question here was 'why should I buy the books again?' And to that, I answered that you don't have to. I feel that it's a completely honest and unbiased answer, coming from the heart.

My point is... whether the moderator is an employee of the company or not, they are a representative for the product. If they are abrasive and rude, then they run the risk of turning people off of the product. I find the abrasiveness unnecessary and off putting. I am a proponent of the product... so far. But, just reading that post diminished my respect for the product... even if just a little... is not good.

Please refer to the post I just made, right above yours. I hope it clarifies.

Thanks. BTW, even the free version of this site provides value. I am just playing around with the site at this point. But, there is a lot of good stuff here that doesn't require any purchase!

You're absolutely right! We've just gotten a lot of flack lately about "needing" to buy the books again, and how the "free" version is completely useless. I disagree. I've made 4 characters using the character creator, all made in beta, all currently used, and only using free content. I'm actually looking for a reason to make a new character using paid content lol
This makes no sense at all to me.

A dwarf with a canoe on his back? What could go wrong?
I would be interested but I am not paying for the books twice.
