Is there a way to limit a search to within a book? If I want to search only from entries in the PHB, for instance, or only for things within an adventure, I can't seem to find a way to do that. Instead, I have to know where something is and use the index to get to the chapter and then search for it, or use the global search and get numerous hits from multiple sources which requires then finding the source I want the information from.
I would love to be able to exclude the SRD/Basic Rules/EE from my searches as well. It gets a little annoying having two entries for the same thing in search results.
a way to search an adventure/sourcebook would be awesome, even better if i could "search this chapter". I know where things are in books, hell I even know some page numbers -- but having entire chapters on a page makes it difficult to find the info you need sometimes
+1 for this idea. I would like to be able to check boxes to include only the content I own in a search. Or be able to have my searches filter by what I own and then show other content that I don't own in Gray, or at the bottom of the list, or at least in some way indicate in the search results what I DO own vs what I DON'T own.
In the Spell, Item, and Monster listings, you can filter by source.
Would you be so kind as to describe how? I have a search result page up right now, and can't for the life of me find any kind of 'filter by source'. I can filter by "major category" (characters, spells, monsters, items, etc.) but can't figure out how to filter by source. Thank you if you can help further.

I believe what he's saying is within the monster listing and such you can filter a source, not in the search bar. If you go from the main menu > Monsters > Official (or Spells > official or Items, etc.) you are brought to the database. From there, if you hit advanced filters, there is a box for "Source" -- as well as several other filters.
In the actual search, no you cannot filter by source still.

Thanks, Mehetmet for that clarification. I envision using the "Global Search" function the most, one of the reasons I invested in DNDB was to be able to, quickly at the table during a game, do a search and pull up references as needed. Thus, search results with links to content that I don't own aren't much use to me, except academically, so I want to be able to filter out the stuff I don't own when using the global search. Other times I might want to see all that so I know what I might need to purchase, but I need to be able to check a box to not see, or have a visual distinction in the results to tell what I don't own. I couldn't really care less as to what the source book really is, TBH, which is why the filter under the database isn't all that useful to me. I may not remember which book that particular monster or spell was in when I am in a hurry to find something.
Sad it’s not yet implemented also. Seems so basic. I’ve paid for key source books... and am often 'digesting' parts if a sourcebook at a time. And I’m often wanting to follow ideas through the sourcebook. But not having a way to search only that book makes me feel like I wasted my money.
I know it's not exactly what you're searching for (Pun intended) But you can search within a particular source on the DND Beyond phone app! :) It sucks you can't do it on the web, but it's something at least :)
The lack of the basic and fundamental feature to search within a source you have purchased makes me very hesistant to buy any more products frorm D&D Beyond. The search results are a cluttered mess from all kinds of sources, including those you do not even have access to. Surely you can do better than this.
This is a feature that is bizarrely absent. Clicking on a sourcebook or adventure should have a search bar at the top that would allow searching only within that source.
The presence of "Search Everything" at the header instead of the normal "Search" label in a blank bar seems as though it would imply there was an option somewhere to search something other than "everything".
Going back to this old topic to throw my +1 into this feature being desperately needed. As an immediate example, I know that the Dungeon Master's Guide has information on determining town/country/whatever demographics in it somewhere, but I can't find it. I want to search the DMG itself for a few key words that might make it jump out at me, but I can't. All I can do is search the entire website, or the contents of individual sections on at a time, and neither is particularly useful.

Amen... thanks for commenting and 'activating' this thread again. I just sent the following to support@dndbeyond.com (Clearly, they have no intention of actually reading these posts and acting on them.)
"Hi all, After spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on various ‘online only’ resource books and modules… the last thing I need is a new resource book. The thing I need NOW… and that people have been complaining about on the forums for YEARS… is a functional search tool. It’s truly unbelievable that with all the tech you guys have, you can’t make a search engine that’s useable. Sometimes… I want to search ‘everywhere’… sometimes… “just what I own”… and sometimes “Just this one book”. But no… let’s make it as ridiculously hard and useless by ALWAYS searching EVERYTHING. Please… for the love of the hobby… fix this."

That would be a great feature. I was playing OotA the other day, and having just that module being searched would have been tremendously helpful.

How do you get a one-armed goblin out of a tree?
Wave!

This is one of many things that could be done to make search not suck. Also https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/d-d-beyond-feedback/105706-search-is-awful Any plans to get on these any year soon?

It's incredible to me that this topic is still valid. Is there any progress on this? Or am I not seeing something?
Thanks!
