I'm a long time pbp player but all my experience is on RPOL.net. I was excited when Wizards announced this service. How do you think it compares to RPOL? Do you think that robust pbp is possible now or should I wait till phase 2 opens?
There's plenty of PbP going on on these forums and the built-in tags to show spells, abilities and more as well as dice rolls, really seems to work well for PbP.
D&D Beyond is in beta currently, so it'll be very interesting to see how PbP works once all of the additional features have been completed.
My guess is it could be pretty cool, though I still prefer actual D&D sessions. Ok, I just like rolling dice and eating nachos. ;)

Which is better, I suppose, than eating dice and rolling nachos. :)
I don't know how I feel about a PbP server behind a paywall, though. Will it have any particular advantages that other services can;t match?
Use of these forums will remain free after launch, as will use of the basic rules in the compendium etc.
There's information from staff members here about what is and isn't included in a free account. More details will be announced officially towards the end of the beta I expect.
You may find some PbP threads after launch, where the person running it says things like, "allowing full PHB & Volo's" but even then I fully expect that anyone joining that PbP would still be able to play perfectly well using just the free offerings on this site. :)
I'm really looking forward to seeing the sort of PbP that D&D Beyond will make possible.
I like live D&D the best as well. I use PBP as a supplement. With busy lives and family, I enjoy that PBP allows players to respond at their own pace. As a DM it allows me to compose a scene more meaningfully than I can on the fly.
With fully realized character sheet and home brew content, PBP could be AMAZING here.
"PBP" is short for "Play By Post". It's a common style of text based game that takes place in a forum. There's a separate forum for it here on D&D Beyond, you can see some examples there.

Noob question.
What's PbP?

Awesome, TM.
What, in that context, does TM mean?
