Release date is stated as August 15th. For Pricing:
"The “Hero Tier” subscription, for $3/month, will be able to make unlimited characters and use homebrew content from other users. For $6/month, the “Master Tier” subscription unlocks the ability to share paid content with up to 12 other players across all of their games, as mentioned above. That paid content includes rule supplements, such as Volo’s Guide to Monsters, which will cost a fixed, one-time price of $30. Adventure modules, such as Curse of Strahd, will cost $25 (though special Founders’ Pricing on the first seven days after launch will instead be $20). Free accounts can purchase these supplements as well, and no content will be lost if your paid subscription lapses."
Wow I wonder if this article was supposed to release this info yet. I'm surprised there is no announcement on their Twitter or even on this site. I'm sure some people will complain but honestly that's a lot better than I was expecting. I wonder if the Hero Tier includes access to the PHB? I'm assuming you'd need Hero Tier plus purchase the PHB to get all the content but I'm surprised they don't mention the PHB in this article.
"Players will also be able to purchase digital sourcebooks, such as the Player's Handbook or Volo's Guide to Monsters, which will be available for $29.99. Adventure modules will run players $24.99. (Bradford notes that when D&D Beyond launches, the three core game books — the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual — will be on sale for $19.99.)"
As much as I like this sexier look with D&DB, I'm wondering if it's something that would make me jump ship from Hero Lab. I already use HL for the D&D5 game I run in roll20 to create/manage encounters and for character management in the PF game I play in, so I guess maybe I'm just not seeing the value aside from having a nice slick interface for a tablet at the table.
Edit: I guess I didn't really note how these thoughts are at all relevant. My thought is, if I've invested in another solution for character building/campaign management, I don't know if I see the value proposition in dropping $60 for the core books and $30 for supplements in this tool.

Honestly for 5e Hero Lab leaves much to be desired, even with the community packs. I can see why you use it for PF but for 5e without a license there are just somethings that are way difficult to implement properly without setting up a bunch of scripts, and I don't find their editor all that intuitive to use. You also don't get very many decent development updates out of them as far as any of their products. What I mean by that is they have updates posted on their site but no date as to when that update was made so some of their website has very old and dated information.
It's standard economics- being later to the marketplace means you need to be significantly better, or have a unique selling point, to convince customers to move from their current supplier.
D&D Beyond is certainly aiming for better and unique selling point, which I am confident that the Curse team can pull off. :)
Agreed on both counts; I mainly use HL with 5e for building/running encounters, and it's worked relatively well for me so far...but I like what I've seen from D&DB as well. We'll see how things shake out as far as buying up new content packs goes. It always feels like a pretty big initial buy in to get to a feature parity I'm comfortable with, like I could wait on Volo's or any of the other content packs, but the core books are a must, and $60 for 3 books at $20/ea is a pretty big ask. I would hate to be watching this with money invested into FG or R20 resources, too; I can only justify buying the same content so many times. ;)

Yeah that will be a sticking point for some. So far I'm only in for the books, so the asking price doesn't bother me in the least, that and not having to add it all myself. I can't wait to see what else they are able to implement, especially in the campaign management piece.
This is a great tool, but I'm not happy with the price to unlock the books.
I'm running two games at the moment, and both of them have a single remote player, so I was hoping to use this as both a play aid and as a way to keep character sheets (and the ability to pass magic items around to people).
One game is a home brew and the other is the Out of the Abyss campaign. So, if I'm right I'd have to purchase, in order to get what I'm already using in real life, the players handbook, dungeon masters guide, monster manual, volo's guide to monsters, sword Coast adventurers guide & the out of the abyss.
Paying out over an additional $100 for functionality of this great tool is far too much when I've already got all of these books in the flesh. I've also got tales of the yawning portal and several other books on pre-order.
Do we have any indication at all if there's a way to unlock content based on physical copies of books we've already purchased? This is really my biggest sticking point, I've invested a couple hundred dollars in hardback books, that are great and I love, but now I have to spend that money over again to get the same content on a different platform. Same for Roll20 which I also use, there's got to be a better way to make it more flexible. Heck it doesn't even have to be a free thing but a greatly reduced rate or something.

Unlock the content with the physical book is not an option. For the integration with Roll20 or FantasyGround, there have been some hints (Dragon+ interview), but offcial announcement here not yet.

Hi Yinn,
you already have hardback books and, especially with just one player, you only need a limited amount. You could probably run everything just fine without buying any of the books! It depends on the race/class combinations for those player characters though.
That's one of the great things about D&D Beyond though - you can try it out, without purchasing those books, to see if it is something you want to invest some of your money in.
Anyone know when we'll be able to add source books or purchase them here? So far it's still only basic rules and the OGL as far as I can see. For this to be useful we of course need access to the entire material, which I'm more than happy to pay for of course. Drop me a PM if you know or quote me here or something :)

Hi Kaneda,
that information is available in this thread - release date is set for 15th August and all functionality will go live then.
This includes the ability to purchase the additional source books.

Hey Stormknight can you find out if there will be a pre-release purchase option for those willing to hand over their cash earlier than release day?

As the other thread is running away with itself, a couple of questions on release/pricing:
Will 15 Aug be the US release or the worldwide release?
Will the content be available for purchase in app or just from the website? Will prices be the same for both? (I'm looking at you, Apple App Store)
Will the price be the same internationally? Will prices quoted in dollars be the same for everyone else (EU/UK/everywhere that doesn't use the US$)? ie - initial cost of the core books at $19/ea - does that equate to £15 or £19/ea? Or is it charged at US$ on the website to your credit card and they work out the exchange rate/bill?
Will it be possible for players to gift their DM adventure modules/etc?
Digital Trends has an article about D&D Beyond, and it announces the release date and pricing!
