This just might reflect a negative aspect of the video gaming industry, but is there really any reason to preorder XGtE. It would be one thing if it were to give a little snippet or sneak peak, but I mean if not pre ordering for the special edition cover the why pre order at all. Btw, very happy customer.

Well, I am not preordering because I'm going to get it via DDB first and then wait for some errata and reprints before buying a copy for the game table. Other than the nifty alternative cover (which is a valid reason to preorder I feel) the other reason I suppose would be to ensure you can get a copy. I live in a small town so we rarely run out of stuff on the relese date but I know some game stores in big city's only order enough books to cover their presales and then will order more at a later date if the presales go well. This way they do not risk having extra books in inventory that won't be sold.

Here are a few reasons from both sides (the buyer and seller)
money now is better than money later (seller)
Avoid a "surge" of inbound traffic when the material officially becomes available, causing potential server issues (seller and buyer)
Avoid any issues with payment on the day of release, if you have a support issue with a pre-order, you have a little bit of time to figure it out without missing the content available (buyer)
I'm sure there are more, but those are off the top of my head not thinking too much into it.

You make some good points here about traffic

Another reason for a pre-order is that there are people, not me personally but I know quite a few, that aren't really all that great at holding onto money for something they want later - they are going to end up spending that money basically now, whether it's on the thing they want or something else that catches their attention in a moment when they aren't think "this money is reserved for that thing I want" - so being able to pay now, before they get distracted and buy something else, and still get the thing when it first releases is of benefit to them.
It's kinda weird that the preorder was announced before the preorder bonuses. It's only two months away, so one would imagine this should be sorted already.
Granted, I already placed my preorder without even knowing about the bonuses, knowing that there's no way I'm not getting this book on here. Just a little weird is all.

I'm not exactly like that, but if I know there's something I want I'd rather spend on it now rather than later, it helps me keep track of my purchases and how much i'm actually bringing in and stuff.
I'm kinda hoping the preorder bonus can be retroactively applied to anyone who has already placed a preorder before the announcement. But if not, oh well.

Obviously I have no way of knowing but I can almost guarantee they will do that, I wouldn't worry about that.

That's absolutely not something to worry about. :)
I would say they added it as a pre order to ramp up quarterly revenue to showcase to their leadership the benefit for more resources in order speed up their roadmap.
I was thinking it is stupid to pre order because there is no true benefit (I'm not worried about their server load, ability to take our money or ...) but since I want them to move faster I'm going to do it.
i hope Adam's wife made tons of little xanathar beholder like his and they will give that away as a bonus ;) if so i'm preorder it as soon as Adam confirme it

Adam said there will be pre-order bonuses to be revealed soon. Not sure what that will be, see tweet.

Notably, at least there is some aspect to bonuses that we may receive :D Fingers crossed :P
