This may already be in the forum, or is otherwise an easy thing to do, but I just cant find where you can change the Player Name so it shows correctly on the character sheet? Anyone have any ideas? At the moment the default name showing on the sheet is my username for D&DB
Thanks Firehawk, yep that works. Seems odd DDB wont let you change the Player Name natively though! Why have a Player Name section if it just defaults to your username, odd! Hopefully Wizards will change this.
This discussion is old but I'm having the same issue. I would like to have this be automatic and not have to modify the PDF before I print it each time.
If they won't let us set the value on the character, the exported sheet should at least default to being blank... having it print out my username is less than useless, since it prevents me from being able to fill in the name with a pencil after printing.
My ideal option would be the ability to set the player name on a per-character basis, since I maintain the character sheets for my whole family in D&D Beyond. Obviously that's not really the intended use case for the site, so I'd be fine if they just made it so the username field was empty when you print it.

Make a campaign.
Have them join D&D Beyond and your campaign to add their characters.
Now you can see all their characters and it will list their usernames, which you should be able to use to identify which character belongs to which family member.
Whether the "player name" entry on the pdf export has their username or blank or was a field in the builder: it would still be something you have to check and fill in anyway, so nothing actually changes there.
To be honest, the player name is less important than the character name. In my games, I have a rule. When we are playing you are not Jane Doe or John Smith, you are your character and that is the name you are called.
So instead of Jane Doe, its Edna Weaselwind and instead of John Smith its Vrak van-Doom.
I am unsure why you would need real world names. If you do have to associate a character with a player, usernames are perfectly fine for doing that.

Right, the issue is, my mom is not going to make an account on D&D Beyond, she's also not going to understand all the decisions involved in building a character and just wants to sit down with a character already made. So I make a character in my D&D Beyond account for her and the rest of my family, and I also level it up for them (asking them questions when I think they might care), so "use separate D&D Beyond accounts" would be a pretty big effort for the amount of time it saves me from clearing the name out in the exported PDF sheet, since I'd be the one maintaining those 5 separate D&D Beyond accounts as well ;)
Correct, that is what I currently have to do... however if I forget to do it, everyone has "Ductyl" in their "Player Name" section, which, arguably isn't even useful even if it's a character sheet for me. Nobody at my D&D table knows me as "Ductyl", they know me by my real name, so again, *why* does my "Username" get automatically filled into the "Player name" section? And while we're at it, why does "Temp HP" have "- -" as the exported value, why isn't this box blank so we have empty space to write temp HP into?
If you export the character sheet to PDF, you can change it there. Otherwise, for privacy purposes, it will only ever show your username.
This seems like an odd response... like, I understand not reading my real name from my account and printing that automatically onto the exported PDF, but the request is to allow us to set the value which shows up in "Player name" for each character, I should be able to manually set the name I want to show up there *once* and have it always export that way, not have to change it in the PDF every single time I export.
I'm also having this issue but opposite. It's putting my email, which is also my real name on there instead of my username... Is there a way to change that?
I'm having a similar issue. I've made characters with my kids and would like their names to appear in the player tab without having to manually change it each time I save as .pdf. Thanks!
Could not agree more. I just purchased a couple races so I could build a new character for my wife, and found out about that lazy design choice. Way to go to convince people to spend more money on your site!
My experience was similar to others in this thread. I made characters for my wife, son and friends, because they will not all be signing up with DnD Beyond. They want this to be easy and taken care of for them. First day we sat down to play, the first thing my wife said "Why does it say 'Player Name Emagnor'? Who is 'Emagnor'?" :P
Big problem? Definitely not for me.
But I was hoping to change it in the system. Sure, I don't need it now, but in the future if I make more characters for more people, it might help me to keep straight which characters belong to which players.
Also, having the exported sheet left blank is a nice extra option, to avoid irksome, spousal questions and leave space for everyone to fill in the old fashioned way.

You just change it when you export the sheet.

I'd love to, as a DM, make a note of a custom "nickname" on each character in my campaign.
I know who my players are, but until a few sessions in it won't be immediately known to me at a glance who is Zyrdeux the Barbarian ;)

Privacy schmymacy!
If I personally go type my real name or nickname or whatever for the PlayerName field, I voluntarily know about what kind of privacy I allow.
Saying that they do not allow the feature for privacy reasons is lazy and insulting: I know what amount of my own privacy I want to give away!
Having to go edit the PlayerName field each and every single time I update my sheet and export it to PDF is really, really annoying.
Could not agree more. I just purchased a couple races so I could build a new character for my wife, and found out about that lazy design choice. Way to go to convince people to spend more money on your site!
so use a different field to store player names, it aint rocket science
