"We shall see about that Namura," the pirate replied cockily before grabbing the rope she hadn't even realized she was playing with and flying away in an effortless maneuver. The ranger didn't care that she had probably already earned a less than stellar reputation; people were horrible, untrustworthy, and selfish. Namura kept reminding herself that the opinions of others did not matter as the captain berated her.
The group began to splinter apart as soon as formal introductions had been made, with a few of the Renegades pairing up with pirates. Everyone else had found someone they could talk to, or some purpose they could occupy their time with. Namura knew from past experience that none of the tinkerers would want her staring past their shoulder, or, more accurately, touching what they were working on. She was a decent warrior, and an even better hunter, but outside of the woods or battlefield she felt like she just got in the way.
Left behind, the ranger decided to find her own place on the ship, out of the way of everyone else. Grabbing another rope with no regard for what it was attached to, Namura untied it with purpose. She looped the strong chord around her waist and tied it snugly. It was a long way down after all. With the dexterity of a cat, Namura climbed up the ropes of the ship, aiming for the sails. They almost looked flat, and she was sure that she could reach the top of them.
After a few minutes of rigorous climbing, the elf finally reached her goal. She was able to sit on top of the white and gold sails, her seat billowing beneath her. She felt on top of the world, untouchable even. From up here, she was above all of the petty problems of people. Namura could simply exist, and breathe in the fresh air. She smiled down at the beautiful, untouched landscape below. The unsocial ranger felt a pang of homesickness in her chest, a longing that had driven her to join this mission. As soon as Namura had heard that the Renegades needed people to go to Peema, she had leapt at the opportunity to return home. She needed to feel the dirt (proper forest dirt) between her toes, and breathe in the trees.
Lost in her thoughts, the elf did not realize how much time had elapsed since she had found her own little perch. Of course, she was brought abruptly out of her own little world by the colossal rumbling that seemed to upend her whole world. A behemoth broke through the clouds, causing the ranger to recoil in fear.
Unfortunately, her reactions caused her to lose her already precarious footing on the sail. Namura could not stop herself from sliding down the sail, all the way off it. Her moment of free fall was abruptly ended by the hard flooring of the main deck. Apparently, the rope that was meant to catch her was longer than the actual fall, and mostly useless. With cat-like reflexes, she rolled into the fall and slid several feet along the deck before coming to a stop. A few elven curses escaped her lips as she squeezed her eyes shut. "What is going on here?" she groaned.
The cabin roared to life with the turbulence and Lero's eyes shot open. For a moment he forgot where he was, seeing the ceiling in grays that were unfamiliar to his eyes. He arose quickly, his tunic and breeches still on his person but his feet bare. Grabbing his rapier, he headed to the deck as quickly as possible. As the light grew upon reaching the deck, he lifted his goggles. It was sunset, and as the sun went down the huge monstrosity before him took his breath away. He dropped his rapier on the deck and stood, gaping at the huge creature before him. "Impossible..."
As Elto rushes out, Flux called out to them before following them up onto the deck, unable to resist the mystery.
"It seems we got off on the wrong foot. Forget about what I said, and I shan't think of it either. I'd hate to not get along with someone on the ship."
As they reach the deck and look out, they see the aether first, and then the beast behind it.
"I think I've seen one in a book before. Never thought I'd get the opportunity to see one in person. Marvellous."

Azi rises up in pure awe and wonderment at the sight of the beast. "It is like I am viewing the incarnation of a god. I never knew such a beast existed, nor would I every imagine getting to see one myself". He will bow his head down and say a quick chant known to his people from the monastery, "if only my master were here to see this".
After a few moments Azi will turn to locate the rest of the crew and is humbled that their reactions are similar to that of his, one of amazement. 'It is good to know that even those so entrenched in using aether in their day to day life can appreciate a force of nature such as this.' He will head over to stand with the rest of the crew and take in the experience.
Lero nods to Flux, "They're legends. Creatures that only exist in stories told by drunken sailors at a tavern. At least that's what I thought. Only a handful of people have ever claimed to have seen one..." He reaches down to pick up his rapier, the futility of such a pitiful weapon dawning on him. He looks over to the control center and sees the Captain beaming in delight at the sight, waving and pointing, showing her excitement at such a rare creature.
"Assendius at dawn and Naereve at dusk, Forever searching one for the other. A story of loss and of yearning for love, The story of a sky that quakes and quivers. Behold the sight and hold railings tight, Steer clear of the Aether-stream's rivers. As the sun leaves the sky and the moon doth rise, Tis Assendius and Naereve's heart-wrenching demise."
Lero finishes the ballad and shakes his head, "Needless to say, we're going to steer far around this creature." He gestures for the redshirts to check the riggings, knocking them out of their reverie. "Prepare for some turbulence, boys! If it isn't tied down, it belongs to the Aether!"
He looks over to the Renegades, "I suggest you go back below-deck and find one of those seats I told you about. We might hit some turbulence as we steer around this creature." As he says this he pulls a tether from the railings and begins to tie himself off, "If you feel the need to stay on deck, I suggest you find a line."
A loud, mechanical voice can be heard above the rest. "That is a very large skyfish. Judging by the skin glow, it has absorbed staggering amounts of aether, which has helped it evolve into a creature so large. I would not recommend anyone trying to shoot it with a harpoon. The amount of aether it absorbs when it opens its mouth is evidence to how much power it would produce if it turned on us and created such an enormous difference in pressure. The pressure difference would pull in anything in front of it for hundreds of meters. I will go tell the captain to turn the ship away. She's too excited to have thought about that."
From the deck, you can hear muffled yelling coming from the control room, as the ship suddenly veers off to the right, going parallel with the leviathan. He returns, a few minutes later. "I was right. The captain also fears, though more simply stated, that the pressure differentiations will cause varying amounts of wind turbulence, which will result in a "bumpy ride", per her words. I recommend that those who wish the stay aboard do the same as Master Lero, and the rest head down below and make sure your items are secured. We will simply have to wait out the creature, for it has now intersected our route towards Peema and the dark site."
The deck quickly disperses, as the deckhands strap themselves in on the deck with Lero, and most of the other ship's crew go below. Dahlun, the dwarven mechanic, seemed to almost sprint downstairs at Elto's mention of turbulence. Few are left on the deck, as most have gone down below. With the sun having set, the leviathan has turned near invisible, save for the flowing streams of aether that seem to illuminate and course through channels within its body, creating an effect of glowing lights that dance and sway with the leviathan's graceful movements.
OOC: I'm going to advance us to the following day.
The night was uneventful, save for the ship rocking or swaying, either due to the turbulence or Arial falling asleep at the wheel. The captain has sent one of the deckhands to gather everyone up and send them onto the deck for some much needed breakfast."We don't starve our guests on the ship, Lennir! Get some breakfast prepared in classic Ghirapur style, or we're tying you to the bow spirit and going roc hunting! Now MOVE." As the party awakes with the rest of the crew and gather aboard the deck, they see it to be just past dawn, as the sun illuminates the beautiful landscape beneath them. Swirling rivers snake through channels underneath, creating a maze of flowing patterns with contrasting colors. Off in the distance, an enormous slab of green can be seen covering the land as far as the eye can see, the entrance shouldered in between two mountain ranges. Peema, at last, was on the horizon. Bringing your attention back to the deck, you see that it has been set with long, short tables, centered on rugs, with pillows for seats. The smell of the food is inviting, as the spices caress the nostrils and make your mouths salivate.
Azi takes no delay as he jumps in to find a spot at the tables and begins to eat his fill. At this point he seems quite focused on the food at hand, but will stop to exclaim "This has so much more flavor than the food back home..."
The sound wave breaking through the hull even to the engine room made her arch a brow, but then a grin forms at Elto's calculation. "I would put it more like 98.26 with a dose of optimism if the thing is really paying attention to us."
She turns to Flux. "It's natural to get emotional for most sentient beings, but all at different levels. Let's move on and see what this thing is."
She follows them up onto the deck. "Ah, marvelous. Stories come true. As long as we don't ride the Aether it wants, we should be fine...well...mostly." She watches the beast that she can only see the beginning of. There was a 100% probability even her thunder cannon wouldn't even phase such a beast. It was eating aether at a rate faster than her family could eat a good sized platter of shellfish.
Lero's words about turbulence was already on her mind. "I'd say buckling in is the right choice."
She says nothing about the ballad Lero sang, but she had heard it or read it before, probably both. She ducks back inside heading to the engine room where she might actually be of the most help if things got shook up too much.
She managed to sleep through the night quite well. Nothing had needed attention as the turbulence was only strong enough to wake her now and then with it dissipating as the night went on. By morning she was hungry and heard about food topside. Nothing like a meal al fresco.
She took in the skies and then the land ahead seeing that they were within sight of Peema even if still far off. After some serious stretching to loosen up her body for the day, she finally sits cross legged at a table. Using her long arms, she is able to reach for several things of interest to put on her plate without having to ask for it or get in someone's way.
Seeing that the food was prepared Duncan not knowing proper protcol, begang taking handfuls of everything and putting it on his plate. When he went to sit down, the plate was filled with literally everything. Realizing how much he had taken, Duncan began to feel a little overwhelmed. Yet he focused his attention on the food. There was no use in trying to take it back. It was on his plate, and it would be wasteful to not eat it all.
With that mindset, he began eating away at the delicious food. By the time he had finished, Duncan felt like he would never eat again. "This meal was amazing! Although I fear I ate to much." Ending his complement with a hick up. "I think I will outside for some air."
With that Duncan left the group and went to the bow of the ship, taking in the morning breeze.

A bout of laughter is heard from the crew nearby and you can see Lero pantomiming as he tells a story. By the time he ends the redshirts are crying with laughter and Lero emerges from them with a grin on his face.
"Good morning Renegades," Lero says as he gestures to the food. "Enjoy yourselves. This feast is brought to you courtesy of the wondrous Chef Lennir. He's got an odd taste, but an amazing palate. Do you mind if I join you?" He sits next to Buama without waiting for an affirmation. "Such beautiful hands, Buama. The extra appendage must make you all the more dexterous when dealing with small objects. I'd love to watch you work sometime."
Without missing a beat as Lero makes himself comfortable next to her she replies, "It depends on the small object and what I intend to have it do."
She pops a rather spicy morsel in her mouth and shows no sign of it seeming as hot as it really was. The cook had done well with his choice of food and had even spiced the coffee to her liking. She licks her lips and nods in approval to the taste.
"Flux has something he wants me to look at that he has been working on, but we got interrupted by the mighty aether eater last night. My speciality is in weapons, making and diffusing. Of course, I'm quite good at detecting inefficiencies in many systems. You can already bet this mission is not going to be a quick and easy thing because I got sent instead of someone else from the lab."
She gives Lero a smile, but it is one that could be read several ways, maybe even a hint of challenge in the look on her face. Then she pops another spicy morsel in her mouth without bothering with a drink.
"Why Buama," Lero says, "If I didn't know any better I'd think there was a little innuendo in that reply." Lero spoons a small bowl of the curry and rips off a large piece of flat-bread.
He dips it into the bowl and takes a bite. "Wow," he says, "I think Lennir was trying to impress you all." He lifts the bread to Lennir in a sort of salute and gives him a satisfactory smile.
"About the mission," Lero sets the bread on the table, "What details do you have so far? I'm assuming we're only meant to drop you off and pick you up at a later date. Would you like to scout the area from above? Do you know when you'd like us to do that? Would you prefer a few fly-by's so that you could signal us? Maybe let Buama show us what a real explosion looks like as a signal?" He gives her a little nudge. "I admit that I don't like the idea of dropping you off too close. We'd much rather drop you off a day or two away from the facility. We can easily provide you with a week's worth of rations if needed."
Azi will stop eating with Lero's words, look up and say "Well, are you not coming with us?" with a puzzled look on his face. "You make it sound like you already know many of the answers but then ask all of these questions. I would prefer if you set down incase we find something we cannot handle and need to retreat. For one so confident you seem to have suddenly grown a cautious side."
And with that Azi turns back to his delicious food and continues to consume it.
"You have to realize, Master Azi, we're pirates. We're being paid to transport you to the site, and if needed transport you back." He shrugs, "We're friends of the Renegades and we agree with their cause, but we're also our own group. If you needed ground support from us, they'd have paid us more I'd wager." Lero picks up his bread again and takes another bite.
"I think someone doesn't like being grounded." She nudges Lero back just enough for him to realize her elbows are bony enough to hurt if she wanted to make a point.
"The site went dark with no clue. We have no intel and for some reason they picked me to come. They might think they know something, but it isn't the type of blackout that warrants this level of getting us there. It means it's darker than dark. Not even a beacon signal to say why it is dark. When that happens they can safely send a mechanic crew." She looks at Lero. "Anything we can figure out beforehand would be a good thing. The closer the better though we have to make sure it isn't obvious the pirate ship cares about the area."
She frowns, but one of concentration. She quickly pulls out paper and charcoal pencil and starts making notes. Some look like equations, some of it might be a map though as she goes things start overlapping.
"You are right, my dear. I prefer the freedom of the skies, as does the crew. And I will not risk their lives to get you too close to a site that may be compromised. I'm sorry. Depending on what we see upon approach we will determine how close we are willing to go." He finishes his bread and curry and stands, looking over Buama's shoulder. His breath is soft against her neck, "And what is this?"
Shifts slightly as if only to look over her shoulder at him, but actually her shoulder taps him in the chin. She grins.
"Why it's how close we can get based on what could be there to hit us of the weapons I know of and the defenses there if they have been also compromised. So my calculation is a fast flyby at two kilometers, but better to see what we can figure out from about four. If Elto doesn't like the odds, it will be further out. Of course, this is just a quick estimate and I would like Elto to see what he thinks as he calculates probabilities astonishingly well."
She grins enough to cause a dimple and then decides to eat the last morsel cooling on her plate.
"Oh, this could also vary based on how the aether flows around there for the most speed and maneuverability of the ship. I always found that an interesting addition to aerodynamics. My forte is directing weapons based on wind patterns and relative altitude differences."
She quickly scribbles another note and nods her head. She jumps up easily from her cross legged position to go talk to Elto.

Lero joins Buama, quickly taking pace beside her, "Your weapon knowledge is impressive, Buama. Very impressive." He quickens his pace slightly to see her face, "you might be right... the renegades went overkill sending you out here." As an aside, "I'm glad they did though."
"But... what would Elto know about weapon capabilities?" He says outside the engine room.
"He knows how to calculate so he will check my calculations. I would be astounded if you did not have access to standard weapon statistics. Actually it would be good if you do so I can double check myself on a couple stats."
She circles a couple of numbers as she walks. She appears to almost miss the door, but a quick side step and she swings in the door as if she meant to move that way.
