Greetings, PbPers!
I've written a one-to-two-shot that I'm going to be DMing in a month or so with my RL group, and I'm looking to do a PbP run first. (Or at least, start it first: a month in PbP time may not enough time to get through one or two session's worth of material, but we can at least get part way through, and I'll see the PbP run through to the end regardless of how long it takes). If the group dynamic is good, maybe I'll even write follow-on material.
The Adventure
Title: No Rest for the Dead in Avlor
Synopsis: The city of Avlor is having a problem with its dead: they're not staying that way. Your mission is to figure out why, and stop whoever is behind it.
Style: This is mostly a classic dungeon crawl, with the exploration and combat pillars well represented. The social interaction component is present but occupies a smaller share of the adventure than the other pillars. It is intended to be completed in one or two standard real life game sessions; in game time it takes place in a single night. Since this is a one-shot, it's not a wide open world; there's more than one path through, and choices you make affect what encounters you have later and how they unfold, but it's naturally a little bit railroady. If that's going to bother you a lot, this probably isn't the best adventure for you.
Characters
Party: I'm looking for six characters at level 11! How often do you get a chance to play characters at level 11? Especially in PbP!
Stats: Standard 27 Point Buy
Source Material: Any published race, class and spell options are fair game (no UA).
Content Sharing: (Edit, 12/29: I believe we have all sources shared now! If you want to use content you don't currently have access to, create a sheet that's close, and post what you actually want to do in the thread)
Equipment: Start with anything your class grants as starting gear, and up to 2000gp worth of standard non-magical items or material components. You can start with either one rare or two uncommon magic items of your choice (subject to DM approval). Pay attention to carrying capacity: you can carry up to 15 times your strength score in stuff.
Variant Rules: Multiclassing, feats, and variant humans are all allowed (but I will be paying attention to illumination and free hands, so darkvision counts, and the perception penalty in dim light applies).
House Rules
I will mostly follow RAI to the extent that is clear from what is written / sage advice clarifications, with a few exceptions:
Casting Action Economy: We'll borrow the house rule about bonus action casting from Critical Role. Namely, you can cast two spells in a turn if you have the actions to do so, but no more than one can be 3rd level or above.
Ammunition: I don't really care about tracking non-magical ammunition. It's cheap enough that it's more bookkeeping than it's worth. Thrown weapons, though, you do need to track (but can be always be recovered if they end up somewhere you can get to).
Object Interaction: I will consider stowing one thing and drawing another to be a single object interaction (but not drawing two things, unless you have a feature that allows it, such as dual wielder). Interacting with a component pouch or a spellcasting focus (which may include putting away the focus after casting) is also a single object interaction.
Surprise: If the party wants to try to get a surprise round, everyone rolls stealth, and only the lowest roll counts; however, some characters can opt out of the stealth roll provided they keep a reasonable distance. If you opt out, you don't get a turn in the first round, but take subsequent turns as normal.
The Help Action: If you want to take the help to grant advantage to another character on a skill check, you need to describe what it is you're doing to help. Usually you need to have proficiency in the skill in question to be able to grant advantage, but that may be waived with a good enough motivation.
There are probably a few other things I do that depart from official rulings that I'm not thinking of; if there's something specific you're wondering about, feel free to ask!
PbP Etiquette
I'm hoping to get through as much of this as possible by the time I DM it IRL, so I'm looking for players who can post regularly (at least once a day if you have something you want to be doing). I am highly active on DDB and will do my best not to be the bottleneck of the game. If you have holiday or travel plans, etc., that might prevent you from posting for a couple days, nbd, just try to let me know in advance. If I don't hear anything from you in several days, I'll open up recruitment again for your spot.
Combat: I'll roll everyone's initiative for you, since I don't see the point in waiting for everyone to post a die roll that they have no control over anyway. I encourage you to pre-post your turn at the start of a new round, possibly with a contingency plan if there's something different you'd do if something changes before your turn comes up. I'll put things in sequence and post a summary of the round at the top of each round. My hope is that when in initiative order, we will usually get through a round per day; from the time I post the summary at the top of a round, if you don't post anything in a day and a half or so, I'll pilot your character to a reasonable action that doesn't expend any limited resources.
Out of Combat: When it comes to changing locations, contributing to conversations with NPCs, etc., much the same guidelines apply, namely, if you don't post anything in a day and a half or so, I'll assume you're just going along with what others choose to do.
Recruitment Process
Hopefully that's more than enough info for you to decide whether this is something you want to do.
What to Post: If it is, post a name, race, class(es), a brief description, and a link to an approximate DDB character sheet (that is, get as close as you can to your character with the source material you have access to) for up to two possible characters in this thread (no PM submissions, please). You don't necessarily need a detailed backstory; we'll jump in assuming you've been adventuring together for awhile. You also don't need to have every detail of your character(s) fleshed out ahead of time, but have at least your stats and proficiencies filled in so I can build a party that covers most basic roles. You can figure out equipment, magic items and spells later if you're selected.
Notification: I will contact those selected within a few days, and post here to notify the rest when recruitment is closed. If you have questions about anything, please feel free to post them here as well; chances are you aren't the only one.
I would love to be a part of this, I'll edit later with some character ideas
Celric Chryosos-Ignis, the dragonborn (gold) cleric (war) - Comes from a warrior clan, one particular day during a battle that went on for days -- He felt divine intervention. He fell and as he held up his shield to block himself an attack that should have fell him for good left a perfect emblem of Bahamut. His father sent him away to learn to become a cleric.
magic items: Minthral Plate Armor and +1 Shield
or
Charles Von Stormbringer Half-Elf Draconic (Blue) Sorcerer - A wild child of a sorcerer -- they are a family of sorcerers and they have a long lineage many believe it can be traced back as far back to some of the more famous dragon deities. Charles values power. He often lets it corrupt him. He doesn't always necessarily set out to make evil choices but if they are in favor of his thirst for power than he will go toward it. He favors lightning's raw power over the unweildness of fire, fire is too sloppy for Charles to rely on, but that doesn't mean he wont use it when he has to. He's never run from a battle, but he has been dragged by his feet to the nearest healer for revival more times than he'd care to count.
magic items: wand of the war mage +1, cloak of protection
Oh, yeah, thanks for reminding me. Yes, I can turn on content sharing. Currently I have PHB, SCAG, and XGtE. If there's something from another source you want to use, go ahead and say so... it may be possible to work it out somehow.
Dalrak Bloodstone is a moutain dwarf paladin and a follower of Odin, the god of knowledge and war. Dalrak garb consists of a blue coat with golden embellishments, grey pants and tall black boots. Dalrak has short red hair and a long red braided beard. Two different amulets hang from his neck from thick jewelry chain. One is a silver round plate with a blue eye engraved in the center. The other are two golden hands holding red crystals. Silver and golden gauntlets hold a pewter colored warhammer and a dark brown wooden shield in the other.
Magic items: Periapt of Wound Closure, Gauntlets of ogre power
I've edited the equipment allowance a bit, since I realized that allowing armor for free was giving a big gift to heavy armored types without anything comparable for squishier classes, locking out some spells entirely due to material component costs, so I've replaced the non-magical equipment / component allowance to starting gear + 2000 gp.
Since Circle of Spores is published now, is that allowed? If not, I have an arcana cleric I could play instead.
Jarl is a Drow Druid, part of a small clan that kept mostly to themselves, in the mountains west of here. Shy and quiet, he found a natural affinity with the silent beasts of the caves, awe in the unmoveable lichen, and deep respect for the water and the earth that shaped his home, but could also destroy it in an instant. He had a vision of a tunnel collapse and managed to save several families, so now he follows whatever guidance nature gives him. This is what led him out into the greater world, which he is still adjusting to.
Petra is a half-elf (drow, but I can change it) cleric in service to the (Death Domain god that fits the campaign setting). She was abandoned at the temple as an infant by her mother, who didn’t want a halfbreed child of a drow. She’s not sure if her mother picked that temple in particular because she hoped Petra would die and couldn’t bring herself to do it herself, but Petra considers it a great blessing - she’s been raised in a care-filled, non-judgemental environment, for all are equal in death’s eyes. As such, there is little she wouldn’t do for her deity, and she is a very eager proselytizer, which is how she came to be out here now, before joining up with this group.
Brix is a Goblin Barbarian (Totem). Hailing from a Southern nomadic Goblin tribe known simply as "The Horde," Brix was a respected warrior amongst his people despite his below-average stature and overall lack of intelligence. Ever motivated by monetary greed, it wasn't long before Brix chose to leave his tribe in pursuit of more profitable work. He now finds himself in Avlor looking for work as a mercenary.
Exiled from his home for being a fallen aasimar, lived with elves for most of his life until he started adventuring, was taught how to move dexterously in combat, but eventually made a pact with a weapon from the shadowfell to increase his power more.
@YoFizz, can you post character sheets when you get the chance? It's ok if they don't match your intended characters exactly; even if you only have Basic Rules access, you should be able to get close. Mainly I'm looking for ability scores and proficiencies.
Backstory: Flint comes from a tribe of mountain goliath hunters. His mother was in an area of convergence of the elemental planes while she was pregnant with him. His tribe believed him, and the few others genasi - two touched by fire and another of earth - born during the same time, thought these plane touched offspring to be gifts from their goddess, Artemis (or another hunter/moon inspired goddess). Flint devoted himself to the Huntress and used her blessings to see to the health and protection of his tribe.
The wiry half-elf before you pushes a lock of light brown hair off his forehead, and throws a smirk in your direction, framed by a well-groomed moustache and beard. His boots and hooded cloak stand out as being of high quality, likely elven-made, the rest of his attire unremarkable. He learned to lie as soon as he could talk, learned to steal as soon as he could run. More recently he fell in with the 'right' crowd, realizing that plundering ruins and dungeons with a group of well-armed adventurers was far more lucrative than cutting purses. Not that he doesn't still enjoy taking things from people who don't deserve them.
With a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye, this young gnome is happy to make your acquaintance, and looks forward to unlocking the secrets of this world with you! A clever chap, he is currently engaging in studies to explore the effects of incineration, conflagration, immolation and combustion on both living and non-living materials, with a lengthy but gripping thesis to follow!
Solo was built by gnomes of Clan Glimmerflame as a guardian for their clan against the incursions of the ogres of Clan Bonebreaker. He was intended to be a Steel Golem; but disaster struck in the final hours of Clan Glimmerflame. The ogres of Clan Bonebreaker struck during the final ceremony when the earth elemental was being bound to the golem. During the final confrontation the clan elder lost control of the earth elemental. She chose to activate the golem using her pure soul, selfless sacrifice, and desire to protect her loved ones as the power source.
Solo was born of this selfless act and arose to battle the ogre invaders. He drove away the ogres; but Clan Glimmerflame was no more. Bereft of instruction or guidance from his creators, Solo guarded the clan home which now served as their tomb. Years passed with him stoically standing a silent sentinel.
Eventually he heard a voice and saw a light in the darkness, it was Tessa Tallflame the elder who birthed Solo with her noble sacrifice. She was now a small part of his conscious and urged him to venture into the world to do good, aid those in need, and oppose tyranny in all its forms.
Solo now wanders the world looking for those who need aid. He often is observed conversing with Tessa, though none can see her or hear her replies. Tessa has influenced his growth over the years and led him to a path akin to her own of selfless service to the greater good.
Solo reveres Gond & Lathander equally. He views Gond as his creator and Lathander as a bright beacon shining into a dark world.
Thanks for some great submissions! I'm marking this as closed to new submissions for now, though if you're reading this it can't hurt to post anyway, just in case some people bow out. Hoping to send out final notifications to those selected tonight. If you haven't posted a link to a character sheet yet, please try to do so (or at least let me know if there's a reason you can't).
I haven’t made my sheets yet because I’ll need the content sharing. But they are both characters I’ve played before and know very well I can pump out a sheet easy peezy if I’m chosen.
