It is a fairly normal day in Chicago, with some clouds passing by the sun. You have all arrived for another day at work, continuing an investigation into an unusual tip that the Chichago PD has anonymously received.
This is thread 2 for the Advent of Shadows campaign. The campaign will borrow heavily from the Lovecraft mythos, although it is not set in it. Expect lots of urban exploration, investigation, and the like. Combats will likely be few and far between; it is often better to run from an enemy than to risk facing it head-on. The gameplay will begin on July 10, in the meantime please make use of the thread to roleplay meeting each other IC and to discuss the following OOC:
What is the name of your unit, both officially and whatever nickname you call yourselves?
What are the usual times you'll be posting?
Anything else you'd like the other players to know?
I aim to make this campaign a friendly, inclusive environment where everyone can have fun. To that end, I have established the following pledge which I expect you to abide by:
As a player, I will endeavor to:
Check this thread at least once per day for updates, and post whenever it makes sense to in order to keep things moving.
Be friendly towards and respect the other players and the DM. If I have issues with something, I will discuss them in a responsible and level-headed manner.
Keep intra-party conflicts to a minimum, both In Character and Out of Character.
Keep metagame knowledge separate from In Character knowledge, so that knowledge my character could not possibly know does not unduly influence their actions.
Not cheat, and let the dice fall where they may.
Have fun.
In return, I expect that the DM will endeavor to:
Check this thread at least twice per day, and post whenever it makes sense to in order to keep things moving.
Be friendly towards and respect the players. If he has issues with something, I expect him to discuss them in a responsible and level-headed manner.
Not play favorites or hold grudges against players or characters.
Keep metagame knowledge separate from In Character knowledge, so that knowledge an NPC could not possibly know does not unduly influence their actions.
Not cheat, and let the dice fall where they may.
Have fun.
If you have any questions, please let me know and I'll do my best to answer them. I plan on checking the thread at least twice per day (but probably more), and I am in the Mountain time zone. As a fair warning, my weekends are pretty busy so I may have less chance to post during them than I do on weekdays.
Helpful PbP tips:
Give character actions in third person limited view. For example, instead of 'I slam down my mug and shout at the bartender to serve me another round' write 'Bruenor slams down his mug and shouts at the bartender "Oy, barkeep! Give me another pint would ye!"'
Use "color and quotation marks"when speaking out loud. Different colors can be used to represent speaking to different people or groups of people.
Use italics when stating what your character is thinking. PbP is a great mechanism to expand upon internal character beliefs and give other players greater insight into your character's thoughts and motivations, try to make use of it.
Use (color and parenthesis) when describing things OOC, including dice rolls. For example, "As he passes through the doorway, Bruenor scans his eyes around the pub, seeing what sort of atmosphere it has (Perception 8)"
Keep posts to a reasonable length, you don't need to write a novel. Try to say more with less rather than writing walls of text.
When rolling dice, save the post to see the result of the roll, and then edit the post to add your response to that result. Don't add new rolls before rolls already made, or edit or remove rolls already made.
Theo pulled into his marked parking spot in the garage below the precinct. No elevator for me today, need to work off a few. He scored the corner office with a view of lower Chicago just a few weeks ago. There wasn't much to look at today, the typical whimsical clouds moving rapidly against the early morning sky.
Where the hell is Doc and that other dude, ugh what's his name again... Doc just had to take that report we got in last night home with him. Always trying to get an early start, "ahead of the game if you will."
Doc, Scott, and Theo are apart of... (Chicago's T.I.T. (Tactical Investigations Team)).
(I should be able to post daily, in the evening (mtn time). I am USAF, so only serious circumstances will prevent me from seeing this thread every day. I will message other characters in the event I cannot post.)
Scott arrives at Chicago after a direct fly from Quantico, his bosses were not plentiful of details about this new operation but as usual he followed the instruction and attend the directives.
While entered the office, commonly long in advance he sits and have a look on the brief, what kind of unusual tip is that?
He tooks a glance to Theo when the guy entered the room..
And add a flat "Hello" to the newcomer, since he is not the best people person in the world, that is the only spoken word for him for now
_____________________________________________
(ooc): the name sounds good for me, and I was thinking of a nickname like -***- for me, easy but why not? Does we have a team leader or what?
The office is more barren than usual for this time on a Friday, with nobody having announced they were taking the day off. Two members of the unit have yet to arrive at work, leaving Theo alone with Scott for the time being.
The tip-off yesterday took the form of an anonymous letter with no sender address. To be more specific, the sender address was this office, the recipient address is a on a street which doesn't exist supposedly on the southern side of the city, and there was no stamp so the envelope was marked "return to sender." Inside, the letter warns that a group calling themselves Disciples of the Faith is plotting to kidnap 12 people. The writer of the letter was unable to identify who these people might be. A basic search reveals that this "Disciples of the Faith" is a fairly new religion that was established in town a few months ago, and they have so far not shown any criminal intent or activity. As such, the letter would have normally been thrown away if not for the grace of the FBI.
An FBI agent was recently dispatched to Chicago to collaborate with the police department regarding a potential human trafficking ring operating in the area. The masterminds behind the ring are careful to not leave many clues behind, but the FBI has managed trace their center of operations to Chicago. Whether or not this "Disciples of the Faith" is a front for this ring is unknown, but the powers that be felt that it deserved at least an inspection before being discarded.
(Please continue to RP in character. Say things instead of just waiting around. Break the ice. Do something.)
An old, grizzled man slowly makes his way up and into the office, clearly favouring a slight limp in his right leg, and approaches the two already present. "Name's Mark" he offers curtly. "Transfer from Dallas. Still learnin' my way round the city" he proffers by way of excusing his late arrival.
Without waiting for any responses, he approaches the main desk and picks up the letter, giving it a quick look through. Oh joy, just what I needed, a bunch of crazy cultists. And this transfer to...the T.I.T.? Someone sure has a sense of humour here. Upon finishing reading, he looks up and addresses the room at large again. "Alright, so while wait fer mister FBI, might as well get ta knowin' each other. Mark Johnson, ex Dallas PD. Got shunted up here by the bigwigs what thought I might be useful in this investigation, prolly. I'm a pretty decent shot after all these years, but my real specialty's in gettin' people to listen." Probably why they pushed me up here, given what I found out.
Mark's glance seems highly analytical of the other two members of the room as he asks, "So, what exactly'll all y'all be bringin' to the table?"
(I'll be posting mostly in the mornings/early afternoons, central time zone. Team name sounds good, despite the character's reaction.)
"Exactly? I would say an order of my principle" says Scott honestly speaking "Apart from this, I am Scott Hirami, but, well everyone call me *** so, Iassume you can also do, nice to meet you Mark, by the way, I was sent here from Quantico, FBI, its strange I am not aware of another member of the bureau coming here for this operation but, ok maybe its not strange, they always like their confidential strategy so..."
"I am profiler, so i guess my speciality is listen the people and understand them.."
Keeping with traditions of the motto "Always Be Prepared" learned in the Army Special Forces, Sargent Bradly Stevenson known by the nickname "Doc" by his teammates, could always be found in the precinct garage reorganizing the SWAT trucks making sure all equipment was functional and at the ready. Chicago SWAT could be called upon at any time and Doc was not ever going to let his unit down or the people of Chicago. Doc payed special attention to making sure all the trucks always had more than ample medical supplies. Hostage situations or drug raids were commonplace and sometimes things went bad quickly and Doc's first goal was to contain or eliminate the threat and second to stabilize the wounded until proper medical attention could be provided.
Another SWAT team member named Maldonado yells across the garage "Hey Doc! Chief wants to see you in his office!"
Doc replies "Thanks Maldonado, did the Chief say what it was about?"
"Negative! But it sounded important!"
Doc nods to Maldonado in agreement and heads to the elevator to see what the Chief needs. As Doc enters the elevator, he has to crowd in with a number of "suits" he has not seen before. The elevator doors open to the administration floor, the suits get off with Doc and the whole lobby is filled with "suits" and other brass from Chicago PD. Before being able to inquire what is going on, Doc hears the Chief yell down the hall, "Hey Stevenson, get in here we need to talk!" As Doc approaches the Chiefs office all the suits and brass part ways and let him enter into the office.
"Close the door, we need to talk!" exclaims the chief.
"Whats up?" Doc asks the Chief.
For the next hour, the Chief explains that he is assigning Doc to a Tactical Investigations Team (T.I.T.) to investigate a tip the Chicago PD has received. This team is still being assembled and will consist of other members of Chicago PD, skilled citizens and possibly even federal agents.
"So what is this tip all about?" Doc asked
"Take a look at this copy of a letter that came in" explained the Chief.
Doc reads the letter and replies "Great, another wack job looking for attention!"
"The brass believe it is credible and is all over my butt to get this team stood up and on the job immediately!" explained the Chief.
"But seriously Chief? T.I.T? Could we not come up with a better team name?" complained Doc.
"These brain dead politicians outside the door insisted we use it so you don't get a choice and quit *****in about it!" barked the Chief
"So far the team consists of Theo XXXXXXXX, Scott Hirami and an new transfer named Mark XXXXXX so you need to connect up and get acquainted. Now get your gear ready and get out of my office and good luck! "
Doc leaves the office, heads down the elevator intent on tracking down his new teammates.
OOC: First time playing PbP so please be kind and I'm open to any suggestions. I will do my best to check daily but my family and occupation will always come first.
Roll the dice and play the game, I’m not here to listen to your politics.
“But this isn’t right. You’re meant to charge in, sword drawn, banner flying-that’s what all the other knights did!” “Yeah, right before they burst into flame.”

Investigation 10
The Disciples of the Faith claim that they are God's chosen to bring the world into a new age of prosperity. They are largely derided by the rest of the world at large as lunatics (at least, those that have heard of them). They have a main church building in the city in the business district. It is nothing fancy-looking from the outside, and is in fact quite utilitarian in appearance, having previously been an office building.
Investigation 15
The letter is handwritten, and it may be possible to run it for fingerprints to possibly identify who wrote it. Normally this would not turn up any results unless that person was already in the fingerprint database for some reason (such as a job application requiring a fingerprint check or due to a criminal history).
Furthermore, the letter would have needed to be dropped off locally in order for it to be returned to sender rather than discarded, as a far away post office would have likely caught the trick and discarded it.
Investigation 20
There is a case for a missing person which happened a few days before the Disciples of the Faith founded themselves. Their car remains in the parking lot, which indicates that they were likely home at the time. To make matters more unusual, nothing was stolen.
The apartment in question has since been leased to another tenant and the car impounded. The case file is available in the police department.
Scott tipes on his laptop, grappled on the chair while even the last member of the squad enters the room. He spread the road with a quick search for kidnap in Chicago after read the letter received from the department, the Disciples of the Faith uh? He is not so confident on find something but soon, a case tease his attention.
"Hey guys, I found a case that should be interesting, listen this...a missing person, but there's something weird like the letter we received, the person's apartment was broken into at night, and the person seemingly abducted from within their own apartment. His car remains in the parking lot, which indicates that he was likely home at the time, and..nothing was stolen"
"Maybe we could have a look on the case file, its at the department, what do you think? We still have to understand if these Disciples are a serious threat, or just another fouls group, even if, fouls can be dangerous...but, if we can relate this abduction to the group, we could also try to understand which kind of person they likely to kidnap, if any"
While the rest of the team gets to work looking for suspicious activity in and around the city, Mark also pulls up maps and police reports, looking for anything that might be somewhat suspicious. Ugh, this damn city's got no order to it, can't seem to find anything. He investigates fruitlessly, appearing somewhat baffled to his associates.
He looks up as Scott speaks, and listens to the lead. "That's real mysterious. Def'nitely sounds like somethin' we should take a look at." He pauses briefly, then continues speaking. "But y'know, wouldn't hurt to be thorough. Let's, uh, keep lookin' and see if we find anything else what might be passin' strange."

(Since we got some people new to PbP here, another tip I forgot to mention in my OP is to post leads that other characters can jump on. Instead of having a passive post where you describe what your character does and nothing else, finish up the post with something that another character can use as a jumping-off point for their own post, such as asking a question or speaking to another PC. I cannot keep this thread going by myself, you will need to build up some of the momentum yourselves, and the way to do that is to involve each other and actually talk back-and-forth. PbP is a slow format, so you may spend multiple real-life days on a conversation lasting all of 30 seconds in-game; this is fine and even encouraged. I'll keep things moving if people are active but not doing much, but I cannot easily get things moving if nobody is active. So, talk to each other! Plan something! Then execute that plan. I'm can really only assist with the execution, it's entirely up to you to do the talking and planning.)
"So I suppose its fair enough for all of you to follow this kidnap for now, let's go to.....mmm....Francine, yeah I saw she is in charge for the storage of the cold case, we have some paper work to do, we will check if there's something the officers didn't catch, or try to re-interrogate the neighbours, Mark? You can rule the questioning after ok? I will help you"
Scott closes the laptop, stands, and reach the office's door, while waiting for the others to go, he forced himself in a smile
______________________
(ooc) The plan for now will be to go and take the case from the department (assuming we ARE in the department, but maybe I misunderstand, read it, and try to search something could be missed, find the person, questioning them, maybe come back to the apartment even if its been time ago, can I us my Plan feature?
"Yeah, Scott. Sounds like a solid jumpin' off point- but I'm not sure I really follow the plan, what with bein' kinda new around here an' all. If we got some questionin' to do I can take care of that for sure." Mark nods to Doc and Theo. "If y'all got anything to add I'd appreciate hearin' it too. Otherwise looks like Scott has a plan and anything sounds better'n sittin' cooped up in this office all day." He heads towards the door, ready to depart as soon as the team is all prepared.
(I didn't get to read the information, so if you (Scott) could pass along whatever he would share and what he needs taken care of next that'd be a big help!)
"Yes let's take a look at that case and see if we can find some leads to follow up on."
"Did anyone discover anything else?"
OOC: My investigation roll was terrible so I also did not get to read the spoilers. It would be great if everything was shared.

Roll the dice and play the game, I’m not here to listen to your politics.
