I built a Warlock Aasimar Pact of the Tome with a Unicorn as her Patron. She ended up making the pact pretty young, as the Unicorn stepped in when she was in critical danger of being sould sealed to a Devil by dark Warlocks, instead of her Guardian Angel whatever-person Aasmir have. Now my lady does not know/realize that she is an Aasimar, she attributes being able to fly and heal to the Unicorns abilities. Also the Unicorn, as a lover of beauty, had changed my characters hair colour to a light strawberry blonde and bestowed a small, but functional unicorn horn up her head (So my lady can also stab people if needed haha). Also my character's clothing changes on the daily due to the Unicorn taking a liking to putting her in frilly clothing (mostly pinks, purples, and blues). The DM rolls a d6 to see just how ridiculous I am for the day, it is pretty entertaining! I didn't go with the homebew I found of the Unicorn Patron as it seemed a bit broken, but I do have a good number of abilities thus far at level 7! I also picked up Aspect of the Moon, so she cannot/does not sleep, to which I attributed her nightmares of the past were so terrible that the Unicorn sealed her memories away and 'cursed' her with not being able to sleep anymore starting about age 10. My lady reads a lot of books....

So the Warlock was a loner as a kid, constantly made fun of for his voice, the way he talked. So this kid became voluntarily mute, and stayed that way. Eventually, the kid began to notice things no one else would notice: eyes peeping at him through keyholes, hooded figures watching him, etc. This really creeps the warlock out, yet intrigues him. So he goes to the nearest occultist and tells them what's been going on. The occultist tells him that it must be something supernatural, and so they help the warlock perform a ritual to contact this entity. The Quiet answers, revealing to the Warlock that he unknowingly made a pact with The Quiet after taking his vow of silence. The Quiet releases him from this vow, and becomes his full patron, requiring him to "Quiet" beings The Quiet deems unworthy. So he becomes a warlock-assassin.
I was really going for a Dark Brotherhood idea here, and I've thoroughly enjoyed it.
I have a paladin/acolyte of Bahamut that became a celestial warlock. I did some research for who his patron might be, and got some ideas from some 4e materials. His patron is a brass dragon named Vivexkepesk (draconic for "victory storm"), who was just about the most hardcore metallic dragon that ever lived. So much so that Bahamut himself had to basically tell him, "You're giving us an 11, but we need you to dial it back to an 8 or 9." After he died, he became a subordinate to Bahamut. When my campaign started, he was looking for someone to become his champion and get involved in the fight against the Cult of the Dragon. My character impressed him, so he contacted my character, and offered to make a pact with him if he can prove himself worthy.
I have a Tiefling attempting to masquerade as a Satyr Archfey/Circle of Dreams char. The short of his backstory is that he never felt comfortable as a young kid when some of his family muddled with contacting their ancestral heritage, dating back to Eltab the Demon Lord. As such, he would wander off into the forest and sleep in the bough of trees here and there. His appearance was drastically more striking than his parents, resembling Eltab, sort of Satyr ish, so the solace and wonder of the forest was his only friend. As he napped among the branches over the years he would hear a soft female thundering voice that would guide him more and more. I picked an Ancient Moonstone Dragon from AD&D As seen here to teach him three levels of Archfey Warlockyness, and then the rest of his Druid levels as a mentor that guides him through dreams/visions.
Recently I played a Warlock for the first time, and chose to play it with a Water Genasi. This combination was an absolute delight to play for me. She spread the doctrine of peace, calm and serenity: if storms are raging, find eternal silence deep below the ocean. I specifically chose incantations and spells that fit the water domain and her doctrine: Armor of Agathys, Acid splash, Calm Emotions, etc. Regarding her patron, I was really disappointed in the limited choice. A water primordial would have been so good. And since water is everywhere and interact in many ways (it ripples, reflects, evaporates and freezes), she would have a lot of potential to communicate with her Patron. Mechanically I chose Archfey, specifically Istishia, King of Water Elementals.
Can definitely recommend combining Genasi with Warlock, and be the servant, avatar and vassal of your element :).
I did the following for my character that I want to play in a campaign, I put this work into the background so the DM could have more potential story line. So here we go "Connyck is from the far north, well past Lusken. He lived with a clan of fair size, life was hard but, life was good. Connyck was married his wife expecting their first child. While he was on a hunting trip with some other clansmen, the clan homestead was attacked and destroyed. Women were raped then killed, the children slaughtered, everyone dead. When Connyck and the other men returned they were devastated, the group vowed revenge and tracked the attackers, they were humans not orcs or goblins. Seeing the size of the group they knew they had to perform hit and run tactics, so they planned their attacks. That night they started, the enemy was ready for them, they were captured. It was then they found out that the leader of the hunting party sold them out, he was in on the initial attack. The other men were killed, burned alive screaming in agony. Connyck was beaten and left for dead, it was then that a Drow woman showed herself to Connyck promising vengeance for the killings, power to kill the men that attacked the clan, and the betrayer Molgis. That is when Connyck sold his soul, now he serves Scorn a powerful hexblade. Now Connyck has to grow in power, so he can have his revenge". Now Scorn is a powerful weapon and is published here as homebrew on DDB. Scorn wants someone powerful enough that they can kill the weapons creator, who unknown to Scorn is a powerful Lich, who himself has made pacts with souls, if he finds out that Scorn is planning his destruction may do something to stop her.
It usually boils down to a series of basic questions for me, when I'm creating the character as a player or designing an NPC as a DM.
What specifically does the character want, that it is willing to make a pact to get?
How would the character go about getting what it wants, how does it seek its patron?
That usually narrows the list of possible patrons down, leading to another couple questions:
Of these patrons, which would the character be more inclined to seek out, or would seek out first?
of these patrons, which would be more inclined to bind this particular character to it in a pact?
I might be overly simplifying to make the questions generic, but typically this brings it down to at least one or two possible choices. This method does not replace a thematic choice however. If a particular patron would be thematically appropriate to the character, I'll stop there more often than not. If there is no clearly defined theme that would connect to a particular patron, or I'd rather not over-theme the character by tying it to a similarly designed patron, then I'll ask these question.
While I haven't really made a warlock, I know that in the first Critical Role Campaign, a player had a pact with a shadow demon in order to exact vengeance. You could also make it a situation of the warlock gains power by giving the souls of those it kills to its patron.
I'm sorely tempted to homebrew a couple of Pact's and Pact Boon's. My brain saw abit of thing's i could put in as what would be possible/make sense for Pact gifts.
One of them i have done is just a Raw "Necromantic" Pact.. not a specific God or entity, just a Necromantic source, Say.. a Lich, or some really powerful Vampire. The other bits are a "Pact Servant" or Vessel, and a Pact Armour (Which i thought could be a interesting thing as it could potentially slowly spread to show the power of a Patron. Also if they show Displeasure.. it could try and fight them back... Say there own arm Trying to strangle them)
As for one's i want to play... A Fiendish Pact Tiefling, and a Hexblade Human are ideas if i can ever get too play them.
I have a player who is an Aaracokra Warlock GOO, she chose Wind Duke Qadeej as her patron. This was a great option for why her player has ventured out of the plane of elemental air and her pact involved her searching for the rod of 7 parts.
When I played a GOOlock, my patron was Gibbeth from 4e Star Pact, basically Yog-Sothoth from Lovecraft. My Feylock was an Annis Hag. I've never played a Fiendlock for more than a couple sessions, but I think any Archdevils or Demon Princes from Book of Vile Darkness would work out well, many of their minor goals could fit with any PC alignment.
I've got a Feylock right now whose patron may be an ancient Hag of some sort, though she appears to be a powerful Eladrin. I don't actually know, and it will be a while before there is any opportunity to find out.
I've often thought about using Archfey Patron and a Forest Gnome to represent some manner of Fey spirit creature, like a Spriggan or Puca. A Forest Gnome Monk/Druid could be a really good Quickling, as well, but I really wish that there was a Monk subclass that had nature and/or fey themes.
One of my PCs is a hexblade. She started before Xanathar's came out, and was thematically excited by more of a lightning motif so we've been tweaking it a bit. Overall though, we went less in the "patron as malevolent force with it's own agenda" and turned it into more of a rescue mission where their interests are aligned (which is why the Patron is imparting power to her in the first place). There is a powerful entity (going with Storm Giant for now...but still fine tuning) that has a connection to the PCs past she doesn't yet know about. The entity was captured and turned into a sentient weapon. The PC has been getting dreams where, promped and empowerd by the patron, she is learning more about her past and growing in strength. So I tied the PCs journey of self-discovery to also, eventually, traveling into the Nine Hells to retrieve the sentient weapon that has been indirectly imparting power to her; where they will truly bond and become even more powerful. I found it to be a nice way to keep things tidy, given all the other side plot threads I've got running.
This is all just a way of saying patrons don't necessarily need to have crazy different motives or agendas or challenge the PC.
I really wish that there was a Monk subclass that had nature and/or fey themes.
To be fair there is no reason why any of the monk monastic traditions can't be fey themed. Some fey can be ancient beings and they have knowledge of the world they can impart onto mortals that grants them powerful abilities. Way of Shadow, Four Elements, Drunken Master, all could be taught by a one on one with a fey master. Way of shadows could be something from the darker regions of the feywild, Four Elements is from a control over nature aspect, and Drunken master could be from a fey from the reverie that uses their drunken antics to make a fighting form that makes a mortal difficult to hit. Maybe the progenitor of a monastic style learned everything they know from a powerful fey and has been passing down those teachings for generations. But I digress.
A warlock in my group has chosen to take the Celestial pact. He came into his pact very much by accident. Living in the streets as a bit of a criminal Kenku who listened in on a ritual (unbeknownst to him) he later repeated the words and phrases he had heard trying to sound impressive to someone. The patron heard him and decided that she had some use for him and shanghai'd him into protecting her interests. She has given him a carrot to go along with the stick of the promise of granting him flight that he desires. The chance to recover something that his race has lost. The Skies will be his. My intent is to give him the eldritch invocation of Levitate at will and have it evolve into a custom Eldritch invocation for Fly at will at lvl12 (I think I picked lvl 12). He gets occasional 'messages' in the form of silvery feathers that only he can see, directing him towards things the patron wants him to interact with or take note of, warnings etc.

In 4th Ed my Hexblade Tiefflin Patron was one of his Ancestors who through various means achieved Demonhood, but got imprisonned.
After millenias the Only descendant that had the potential to Liberate him, was my Character, after the home town of my Character suffered a devastating Catastrophe and my Char was half dead with a competly crushed arm under the rubbles of a building and half his face mangled by a Monster, this Ancestor called out to him, and took the opportunity to propose to him a Pact, he would give him an arm and a mask to cover his face, and give the power to seek his vengeance, and in return he had to find the place where he was Imprisoned and Free him.
Unfortunatly we ended this campaign at lvl 11 or 12 before switching to Pathfinder, even though the guys think about going back to 5th, so we never got to finish my character devlopements.
But i had discussed 2 ways to end this, either my Character finds a way to free his Ancestor, and also a way to make him obedient so that he doesn't do anything funny, or that if their relationships works well enough that they actually act like trusted Partners to some extent.
Or The Ancestor takes my Character has a Vessel, since its the quickest way to be free of his Imprinsonement, and starts to fight the Group, making my Character the final Over Arching Villain of the Campaign, where he tries to gain power through conflicts, bloodsheds, and political manoeuvres,where you would be able to make a Nation wide ritual to sacrifice all the citizens on it and gain enough power to Become a Demon God.
At that point my Character would have crossed paths occasionally with the reste of the group and would fight it out with them, or He would plot with some others guys that would serve as distractions or decoys, while the party hunts for him.
We never really decided with the DM if i would simply roll a new Character to continue with the Party, and have either the DM or me Pilot the Hexblade during fights involving him, or if i would be 100% dedicated to be Evil and really play like a second party and trying to find allies, power and to ambush the party at every darn corner to slow them down, becoming the real Evil Overlord mastermind or something.
maybe its something that we'll try to do another time.

Just made a Tiefling GOO Tomelock with Dendar, the Night Serpent as his Patron. Backstory is that he is the only non-wizard in his family due to a lack of innate ability, came across a strange tome filled with riddles while working in a mage library, and subsequently ended up down the proverbial rabbit hole. He made a deal for knowledge & power, but hasn't learned the extent of what he owes in return. Sticking to the nightmare/fear theme, so it should be a lot of fun to RP.
Made a human character who's undying patron is Vecna. He was raised as a red finger and wants to learn all he can about his idol so he may become more like him. He takes the deepest offense when he is called a cultist because "it's not a cult guys!" No matter what people say, he is always looking to convert more followers to the cause of uncovering forgotten secrets of the ancient. "Vecna is only misunderstood guys, you just don't get it!" He's also convinced that his powers are divine and the pact he made is a holy one. When he is ever told otherwise he'll try to convert them to his way of thinking.
One of my favorite characters, Natasha, has a pact with a somewhat of a re-skinned hexblade. This patron is named Tresja, The Lady in Gold/Grey, and she is a malevolent harvest spirit who takes sacrifices of flesh in exchange for prosperity and fertility. Here's her origin story:
Before she was born, Her father, Fjord Uriyona, was a simple farmer who tended to his crops and wife for the span of a year, until plague struck. Crops failed for miles around and failed to grow for years on. As he and his wife started running low on food, Fjord went to the middle of his withered field and cried out into the night, asking for something, anything, to bring back his crops and allow him to support himself and hopefully his family. All at once, his vision blackened as a gust of wind swirled around him.
When he awoke, he found himself within a meadow in a clearing surrounded by an expansive forest. Before him lied a circle of stones with a larger circle surrounding it. As he stood, the soft and smooth voice of a woman drifted on the wind as a figure dressed in a golden cloak circled the nearby trees. He called out to the figure, who approached, revealing herself to be a gargantuan, but beautiful maiden with a golden skull mask covering half of her face. The maiden bent down to Fjord, and introduced herself as Tresja, The Lady in Gold. She tells him that she can make his fields flourish beyond belief, no matter what, but there would be a price. She then proceeds to pull a scythe out of her cloak, and offers it to Fjord, telling him, “If you choose, I can give you power and fuel your harvest, but you must slay with this weapon, whether it is someone you choose or I choose, and you must bring their souls to me.” And at this point, she shed her cloak to reveal a gray dress and removed her mask, revealing the disgusting face of a corpse, “For every soul you bring to me, is a year of prosperity for your farm”. Fjord, desperate, takes the scythe and agrees to her deal. She nodded, donned her cloak and mask, and yet again, his vision goes black.
He reawakens in his field, in full bloom, holding the scythe. He then goes on to adventure around every so often, collecting souls of those he deems unworthy of life. Eventually, he learns of a war brewing between an elven civilization and a human settlement. He asks the Lady for power to kill these armies and she grants it. He goes on to kill both of the armies, single-handedly, and offers those souls up to the Lady, who takes them willingly. He returns to the farm after this, and starts a family with his wife, Katrina. He has five children: Natasha, Jayson, Lance, Emmaline, and Alexandria.
Before the birth of his youngest child, when Natasha was 6, he had a dream, and decided enough was enough. He went up to the attic, hid the scythe, and hung himself while his family was asleep. Horrified, the entire family went into a depression, especially Natasha, who was very close to her father. As she grew up, she tried to find out what caused her father to kill himself and, at 17, eventually tore up the entire house in a mad rage. During this rage, she accidentally broke a floorboard in the attic, revealing the handle of the scythe. As she picked it up, Her vision blackened. She woke up in the meadow, confused as a voice called her father’s name. The Lady approached, saw the newcomer, and realized her mistake. Good and Evil are different sides of the Same Coin. One Cannot Exist without the other.

In 4th Ed my Hexblade Tiefflin Patron was one of his Ancestors who through various means achieved Demonhood, but got imprisonned.
After millenias the Only descendant that had the potential to Liberate him, was my Character, after the home town of my Character suffered a devastating Catastrophe and my Char was half dead with a competly crushed arm under the rubbles of a building and half his face mangled by a Monster, this Ancestor called out to him, and took the opportunity to propose to him a Pact, he would give him an arm and a mask to cover his face, and give the power to seek his vengeance, and in return he had to find the place where he was Imprisoned and Free him.
Unfortunatly we ended this campaign at lvl 11 or 12 before switching to Pathfinder, even though the guys think about going back to 5th, so we never got to finish my character devlopements.
But i had discussed 2 ways to end this, either my Character finds a way to free his Ancestor, and also a way to make him obedient so that he doesn't do anything funny, or that if their relationships works well enough that they actually act like trusted Partners to some extent.
Or The Ancestor takes my Character has a Vessel, since its the quickest way to be free of his Imprinsonement, and starts to fight the Group, making my Character the final Over Arching Villain of the Campaign, where he tries to gain power through conflicts, bloodsheds, and political manoeuvres,where you would be able to make a Nation wide ritual to sacrifice all the citizens on it and gain enough power to Become a Demon God.
At that point my Character would have crossed paths occasionally with the reste of the group and would fight it out with them, or He would plot with some others guys that would serve as distractions or decoys, while the party hunts for him.
We never really decided with the DM if i would simply roll a new Character to continue with the Party, and have either the DM or me Pilot the Hexblade during fights involving him, or if i would be 100% dedicated to be Evil and really play like a second party and trying to find allies, power and to ambush the party at every darn corner to slow them down, becoming the real Evil Overlord mastermind or something.

Just made a Tiefling GOO Tomelock with Dendar, the Night Serpent as his Patron. Backstory is that he is the only non-wizard in his family due to a lack of innate ability, came across a strange tome filled with riddles while working in a mage library, and subsequently ended up down the proverbial rabbit hole. He made a deal for knowledge & power, but hasn't learned the extent of what he owes in return. Sticking to the nightmare/fear theme, so it should be a lot of fun to RP.
Made a human character who's undying patron is Vecna. He was raised as a red finger and wants to learn all he can about his idol so he may become more like him. He takes the deepest offense when he is called a cultist because "it's not a cult guys!" No matter what people say, he is always looking to convert more followers to the cause of uncovering forgotten secrets of the ancient. "Vecna is only misunderstood guys, you just don't get it!" He's also convinced that his powers are divine and the pact he made is a holy one. When he is ever told otherwise he'll try to convert them to his way of thinking.
One of my favorite characters, Natasha, has a pact with a somewhat of a re-skinned hexblade. This patron is named Tresja, The Lady in Gold/Grey, and she is a malevolent harvest spirit who takes sacrifices of flesh in exchange for prosperity and fertility. Here's her origin story:
Before she was born, Her father, Fjord Uriyona, was a simple farmer who tended to his crops and wife for the span of a year, until plague struck. Crops failed for miles around and failed to grow for years on. As he and his wife started running low on food, Fjord went to the middle of his withered field and cried out into the night, asking for something, anything, to bring back his crops and allow him to support himself and hopefully his family. All at once, his vision blackened as a gust of wind swirled around him.
When he awoke, he found himself within a meadow in a clearing surrounded by an expansive forest. Before him lied a circle of stones with a larger circle surrounding it. As he stood, the soft and smooth voice of a woman drifted on the wind as a figure dressed in a golden cloak circled the nearby trees. He called out to the figure, who approached, revealing herself to be a gargantuan, but beautiful maiden with a golden skull mask covering half of her face. The maiden bent down to Fjord, and introduced herself as Tresja, The Lady in Gold. She tells him that she can make his fields flourish beyond belief, no matter what, but there would be a price. She then proceeds to pull a scythe out of her cloak, and offers it to Fjord, telling him, “If you choose, I can give you power and fuel your harvest, but you must slay with this weapon, whether it is someone you choose or I choose, and you must bring their souls to me.” And at this point, she shed her cloak to reveal a gray dress and removed her mask, revealing the disgusting face of a corpse, “For every soul you bring to me, is a year of prosperity for your farm”. Fjord, desperate, takes the scythe and agrees to her deal. She nodded, donned her cloak and mask, and yet again, his vision goes black.
He reawakens in his field, in full bloom, holding the scythe. He then goes on to adventure around every so often, collecting souls of those he deems unworthy of life. Eventually, he learns of a war brewing between an elven civilization and a human settlement. He asks the Lady for power to kill these armies and she grants it. He goes on to kill both of the armies, single-handedly, and offers those souls up to the Lady, who takes them willingly. He returns to the farm after this, and starts a family with his wife, Katrina. He has five children: Natasha, Jayson, Lance, Emmaline, and Alexandria.
Before the birth of his youngest child, when Natasha was 6, he had a dream, and decided enough was enough. He went up to the attic, hid the scythe, and hung himself while his family was asleep. Horrified, the entire family went into a depression, especially Natasha, who was very close to her father. As she grew up, she tried to find out what caused her father to kill himself and, at 17, eventually tore up the entire house in a mad rage. During this rage, she accidentally broke a floorboard in the attic, revealing the handle of the scythe. As she picked it up, Her vision blackened. She woke up in the meadow, confused as a voice called her father’s name. The Lady approached, saw the newcomer, and realized her mistake. She talked to Natasha and told her of her father’s deal, while also telling her that if she does not bring new souls to her, Natasha and her family will receive plague and withering of their fields for years equal to the years of prosperity they had. Natasha, worried about her family and hoping to find out more about her father, inadvertently continued the deal made by her father and left her family, supporting them from afar.
