Okay, so I had my first game of Adventurer's League last night. As a lead-up, I've been reading everything I can get my eyes on over the last week so that I wouldn't be too far behind the other players. I read all the Season 8 rewards information, built my character using the ALPG, etc. I thought I was good to go and went off to the game.
However, while I'm there it quickly seems like no one has actually read the Season 8 changes outside of a few online discussion threads. They're all saying that don't like it, but actually seem to know why. It's very strange, but everyone is speaking like an expert on the matter as they've been playing for several seasons.
Whatever, I just want to play.
But then at the end of the session (playing Dragon Heist), the DM awards everyone 141 gold pieces, which I found very confusing based on what I've read. I brought it up and was just told I was wrong and confused.
Does the Dragon Heist module have some exceptions to the GP rule that I'm not aware of?
If they're doing it wrong, they're definitely not going to listen to the new guy about fixing it and I don't feel like getting into drama in my first game.
They seem to be doing treasure points and advancement points correctly, but not the gold. I would like to use this character at other stores or at cons eventually, so should I keep a separate character sheet with the more accurate gold information? As a new player I'm really confused about all of this and no one seems to have the whole picture.
As far as to my knowledge you are correct on this situation. The only time gold is awarded to AL Characters now is upon leveling up. So if you guys played for 4 hours and leveled from 1 to 2 then you'd get 50 gold each (on top of your ACP and TCP). Some of those TCP could be converted to Gold if you wanted, but that 141 gold pieces should not be awarded per this clause found on page 4 of the ALDMG:
Gold and Mundane Treasure. Any entry of a treasure or award with a monetary value is ignored. Other mundane equipment can be used (but not sold) by the characters until the end of the session but is lost at the end of the session. Some nonmagical items encountered in hardcover adventures may be unlocked for purchased using treasure checkpoints....
In Catalogue for season 8 it has Dragon Heist guidance. In that guidance it says:
1. Players may keep the 10gp Volo gives them.... Hmm strange as that means you get to keep treasure offered which breaks the mentioned rule above.
2. Players may steal or not steal the treasure at the end. How is this possible if it is ignored? If they take it, they retire their characters since they are caught (automatically) or spend the rest of their lives running from the law. (again how can I steal what is not present?) And sentence is harsher than written as written is the get caught and do hard time and forfeit treasure and pay fine. Not sure how it is possible to steal the whole treasure with story as written anyway.
3. If you recover treasure and give it to Waterdeep, which is only real outcome as they immediately know you found it. Guidance says you get 8tp immediately. Again this is outside AL rules, so yet again they break their own rules by giving extra TP in a specific adventure.
That's what I was afraid of. Unfortunately they seem dead set and I don't want to be "that guy" to a bunch of people I just met and hope to keep gaming with. It's a new group at a new store and I don't want to ruffle feathers.
I'll probably keep an "official" and an "unofficial" logsheet so I can be legal if I take the character to other stores or cons.
And thus we have season 8 players who are not following the rules. Which is why they made season 8 rules. But the rules for season 8 also break regular dnd rules.
And Al organizers also break their own rules in content catalogue

The guidelines i mentioned above are al content catalogue rules. Their own content rules violate the dm rules
The content catalogue is an AL official document. They don't violate the rules they list the exceptions to the rules.
Under Part 2 Running Dragon Heist, General Guidance: "Any reference to monetary treasure or mundane equipment is ignored per the ALDMG unless specifically stated below."
To go back to the main point though, it seems the DM and other players need to read the actual documentation. If they don't seem willing to listen to you, I would consider looking for a new group if you can.
I would recommend approaching the DM with the S8 documentation and ask for them to explain the gp reward - there is possibly ways to circumvent (depending on what parts of DH you were playing). If you had enough ACP to level up, you also get gp (75 at T1), and the DM may have included that within the amount handed out, even though this is not a reward the DM is to hand out anymore but something players themselves track.
If you aren't worried about your character not being AL legal (you plan to stick with this group and DM and not play at other DM's tables) then perhaps dont worry - as long as everyone is having fun. However one of the big benefits of AL is character portability, especially if you go to conventions, etc.
As ENanneKS pointed out, the content catalog makes exceptions to general rules, not violations of them. If the content catalog says you can keep something, even though the ALDMG says you can't, you can keep it.

How I'm posting based on text formatting: Mod Hat On - Mod Hat Off
Split logs are a great idea. Some groups playing HC maintain gold as prolonged “in session” not on any character sheet, if that makes sense. Same cast of PCs playing through with a shared loot to use.
In any event, just try to do the right thing and majority of time everyone will be cool. Even if you tally extra numbers in error, that can be fixed easily.
