soooooo ever read the silmarillion? i do major campaigns and i was thinking about attempting to start a campaign where the party are the first arrivals on the world (immortal elves finally awakening in middle earth after its semi desecration by melkor) and kind of having to fight their way into creating peaceful strongholds and making a clan (as more arise around them) meeting gods who assist and teach them on occasion. etc. etc. etc. basically trying to rip off tolkien but make it my own in a sense? just curious as to how successful people think it could actually be as a start to a campaign? (i would be forcing them into being elves but they would pick up their own skills and equipment based on what class they requested prior to start)
Why restrict it to elves? Instead of being the first race on earth you could have them discover an entirely new continent ruled over by an oppressive godlike being.
Not only is it a good idea, but it's tried and true. There's tons of Middle Earth setting material out there to pull from for several systems, and last I knew it even had it's own game. Google some stuff and see what you can find for further inspiration.

I didn't read the Silmarillion, but it's your campaign. You can do whatever you want =)
As long as there are challenges and opportunity for a good story, go for it.

If you geek over LOTR hard like me, i would recommend it. It's more like a history book to the universe but it is a good read.

There's nothing wrong with wherever you take your inspiration from. I say roll with it.
