I am looking for some advise from all you super creative guys n gals out there.
I’m about to introduce a new player to dnd and my campaign, set in the current Forgotten Realms - HotDQ.
So the new guy want to play a space pirate, and I’m all for having that odd mix in what is a fairly traditional group. But the question is how to weave it in?
What race and class works well to create a Space Pirate, and what may be a fair background thread I could suggest for why he is there?
one thing I do not have and do not want is guns or space weapons. I’d prefer to lean toward the traditional kit and magic items.
Finally, as a new player I’m starting him off at lvl 1.
any suggestions are welcome, as I’d really like to have it work; i.e. the ‘Yes and’ approach to DM’ing.

As mentioned, the most straightforward is to show him the Githyanki race. They're raiders and pirates from the Astral Plane, so just about exactly right really.

For a Space Pirate or a "Plane Pirate" either Swashbucler rogue or a College of Blades Bard could do the trick.
If he wants a "space gun" simply let him get a modified Wand of Firebolt/magic missile or scorching ray, by modified i mean having some kind of bit that looks like a gun handle

thanks in advance,
Have you checked any of the Spelljammer material?
Your space pirate could have been a crew member on a crashed 'jammer.

Not really. To be honest I’ve had zero experience with anything Spelljammer related.
But will dip a toe into it.
Thanks.
Githyanki make for good space pirates, but going the spelljammer route will make any race sensible enough.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile.
I was thinking that or possibly the Githzerai... but not sure they fit the Space Pieate theme.
Do you we could get away with a goodish Githyanki space Pirate?? Also, why would such a character by joining a band of hero’s in HotDQ?
Needs a bit of thought, but probably doable no??
MTOF??

Gotcha... cheers.
D&D is based around multiple planes of existence. There is nothing wrong with being from someplace else and being a pirate.
Be flamboyant, be like Harlock, swing a sword in one hand and a Wand of Magic Missiles in the other.
