Are the pre-gens customized to the adventure, or is it ok to tinker with them? One of my players wants to be more of a helpful scout type of rogue than the charismatic criminal rogue that comes with the set.
I know to swap out Charisma for Wisdom (and the associated trained skills), I just don't want to take away the criminal background and then find multiple points in the adventure that reference her criminal contacts or something.
As the DM you are in control of authorizing pretty much any change you want to allow. Just because the starter set comes with pre generated characters, does not mean you and the players are locked into using them. Feel free to help your players make their own characters. As most officially released adventures, and homebrew ones go, any character of any background will find their niche and be able to contribute effectively to the campaign. To my knowledge as well, pre generated characters tend not to have a tied backstory that has an influence over the tasks and events that happen in the campaign, so if the group decides to make their own characters, there aren’t weird plot holes you need to address; I think this answers your last point in your question.
For the greenhorn DM with wet behind the ears Players, keep everything to the letter, it makes the game a lot easier to manage and understand. Those sheets are to get people into the game without the need for excessive information dumps. If you're comfortable with changing things up, or your player is experienced enough to trust, by all means mess with whatever you want. You'll find there are a ton of buttons and levers you can mess with as a DM. You'll never know what does what until you start fidgeting around with them...just be ready to look at your players and say "oops" as you start to stretch your wings.
Cool, thanks. I've only DM'd a couple mini-adventures and those were both so long ago (20-30 years ago), I was kinda thrown off by pre-gens being included with the set.

Pre-gens are there for ease of use. If you feel like messing with them, then by all means go for it.
