Hey everyone, I really need help with the mechanics, or even ideas to make it better, on how I'd do a charisma based encounter on 5e. The premise of the missions is our PC's fears, and one of the players said his PC fears commitment and I figured out a way to run that would be a garbage, perverted, good ol fashioned dating show would be a fun way of doing it lol. Like the ones where the man is on one side of a wall and the women are on the other sitting on stools and asking goofy questions. The PC would be the male contestant, and the other two or three players would be the lovely ladies. Any other extra PC's would be in the audience to give inspiration to either the male or female contestants to help on their roles, but I feel like just rolling dice for charisma would get old after a minute or two.
Hopefully I posted this in the right forum lol, but yea if y'all could help me figure out a good way to run it as is mechanically or a better more interesting option to make this fun and memorable! I'd like to keep it non-combat as a good mid point change of pace
Get as much dirt on the character as possible, things they don't want their party (or anyone) to know, things a rival or enemy could use against them, things tied to their flaws and bonds and such. That way, they can use deception/insight checks to check if they're being truthful. Lying hurts, and if caught, will do psychic damage.
Unless I get more info, that's all I can really think of. More details may reveal more creative mechanic opportunities.
His character is the fighter noble from the lost mines of phandelver starter set. His flaw is he has a hard time resisting the allure of wealth, especially gold. He has tried to hide what happened to his family and town he was to inherit, which was destroyed by a volcano, but an NPC outed him to the party.
Good to know. What's the nature of these tests? Are they captured by a hag preying on their fears? Being tested by a god to see the strength of their courage? That'll determine a lot of the angle to take.
My idea was a high level wizard, lvl 20, has been watching the party because they are interesting to him and they are inadvertently trying to stop the same evil that he is. He approaches them finally asking them to help him test out some spells he's creating to use against the new evil thing. He's gone through the world and already gotten all of the spells, in his younger days, that any spellcaster is able to use and has added it to his spellbook. Now he's creating his own spells and needs help with the testing of his new fear spell.
This is a "side mission" thing that i was wanting to run to take us out of the normal setting, add some extra stuff our dm can work with in the future and to give our regular dm a break and let him sit on the other side of the screen. I don't know what the actual evil we're going up against, i just know we've already fought and almost beat a mid level wizard for capturing our friends and that some sketchy stuff is happening on top of a mountain.
If your testing his spells, making rolls to detect faults in his illusions outside of saving throws could be a thing. Profiencies in investigation, perception, and arcana would give some edge to appropriate players.
If fear is what is being fought in this, then maybe it'd be a god time to play with sanity as an ability score. The DMG goes into it, and though it's typically more for your Lovecraftian hijinks, it could be what spices stuff up for you. In fact, rolling sanity checks during a data show sounds pretty entertaining to me.
That's not a bad idea at all, because i was going to make a point to tell the PC's that staying under the spell too long would cause permanent insanity, and i could make different questions worth different dice, 1d6, 1d8, plus their charisma modifier
