My group and I played our first game of D&D this weekend and loved it. It was a massive success for a bunch of 30+ year olds who've been meeting two or three times a month for the past 10 years to play board games.
However, we are all brand new with almost 0 experience. We were able to research a lot of information ourselves and figure everything out that we needed to know, but I have one question:
How many Hit Dice are we supposed to roll when rolling in combat?
So this question probably seems pretty straight forward to you seasoned players, but let me explain why I'm confused. Let's say my Fighter, who is Level 2 (the Dungeon Master had us all start out Level 2), is in combat. He chooses his target and rolls a D20 and succeeds.
Now...
I'm using a weapon that says "1d6" for Damage. However, my Hit Dice on my character sheet says "2d10". Which do I use? What is the difference? Am I supposed to roll 1d6 and 2d10?
I've tried looking this up but I'm still confused, and most of what I find when I use Google refers to using Hit Dice to restore HP during rests.
Your Hit Dice have nothing to do with weapon damage. They're your HP, basically. In that example, you would roll 1d6. Oh, and don't forget to add your bonuses.

so, the Hit Dice are not related to the weapon attack you do in combat. Hit Dice are related to the character's health and to the "healing" during a short rest. Usually, a character has as many hit dice as the character's level. Except for level 1, at every level, the character rolls a Hit Die to determine how many hit points it has gained. Moreover, Hit Dice can be spent in a short rest to regain some lost hit points.

Ok, perfect, thanks for your help guys! I guess I was over-complicating the word "hit".
Subsequently, it also makes sense as to why all I found in regard to them was about healing rolls...lol.

Here's the section in the "basic rules" that covers Hit Dice -- https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#HitPointsandHitDice
It links to resting and that section explains how to use them.
How do you get a one-armed goblin out of a tree?
Wave!
Thanks for the link!
