I have a simple question regarding the use of a Firbolg's hidden step (Ability to turn invisible) trait. If a Firbolg is not in combat, how long can they stay invisible. It is 6 seconds or can they remain invisible for a period of time? If in combat, I use this feature as a BA and choose not to attack, cast a spell or force someone to make a saving throw, can the Firbolg remain invisible if I hold my action?
Any guidance or clarification would be appreciated...
I think that’s up to DM’s interpretation. It says start of next turn or until you make an attack, make someone else make a saving throw, etc., so they might rule only 6 seconds. Otherwise, I would say it lasts forever when not in combat, but that might be too good. I’d ask the DM.
From what I understand it will last until the character's next turn, assuming no attack is made or a saving throw is presented.
So if you were to use Hidden step as your Bonus Action and then Ready an attack, you would remain invisible until your condition is met or your next turn comes around.
If you were to use this outside of combat I would say that it lasts a few seconds similar to an initiative round, so the 6 seconds. I might allow a bit of grace and say that it lasts no more than 10 seconds outside of combat.
As a bonus action, you can magically turn invisible until the start of your next turn or until you attack, make a damage roll, or force someone to make a saving throw. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Using standard language rules, the use of "or" means that the invisible state continues until any one of those conditions becomes true. This means that any of the conditions cause the invisibility to cease.
As such, I would personally rule that "until the start of your next turn" means the maximum duration for the invisibility is indeed 6 seconds.
If something references a round (which is the equivalent of "until your next turn", most of the time), and you're not going with combat timing at the moment, you use the equivalent (of about 6 seconds). The DM, as usual, adjudicates what exactly happens depending on your attempted actions.
For the example mentioned, it should be easy enough to utilize minor combat timing to verify results. For example, how far you can go before you appear again (1 bonus action to go invisible, then one move, and one action for Dash, and we conclude you can move twice your movement speed before you are visible again - remember you're not inaudible, though).
But no. Something that is active for one round in combat doesn't become an indefinite effect outside of it. :p
For in-combat, let me point out that there is no "hold" action in 5th edition. You can "Ready" an action when it's your turn, or you can choose any other action, but you can't just wait. And regardless of what you do, when your turn comes again in the initiative order, effects that last "until your next turn" end.
My DM ruled for our table that a hidden step outside combat lasted for 30 minutes aka half the time of the actual spell but not so short to be useless outside of combat.( Even though that was the only time he ruled in player's favor at the table.)

This sounds like a homebrew monster, for which we can't guarantee "rules correctness". What's the source?
edit - I stand corrected - ignore
He’s talking about the race.
