I've got an idea for a character concept and build that I have to play!
I would like to create a Elfnoblewhose lineage is inexorably tied to the Feywild and the Archfey within. My thought would be that he would start as a Bardbut then gather levels as a Warlockwith the Archfey patron and levels as a Sorcererwith the wild magic sorcerous origin (I'd consider wildmagic a reflection of the chaos and whimsy of the Feywild).
I don't consider myself a min/max'er but I do like to play characters that are effective. I would appreciate advice from the forum on the best build here...
Personally, I am considering Bard 10/Sorcerer 7/Warlock 3. The lack of spells beyond 5th level is a concern though. So maybe Bard 13/Sorcerer 4/Warlock 3 would be the better choice? Or a Bard 4/Sorcerer 13/Warlock 3? I just don't know.
Thanks in advance for any advice and yes, you may tell me I am out of my mind. I get that sometimes... :)
Rangers and paladins survive just fine with no spell slots above 5th level, so that shouldn't be a problem. I will say that you probably want to take enough levels of warlock to get 4 Invocations (Agonizing Blast, Eldritch Spear, Frost Lance, and Repelling Blast), though.

Interesting...a deeper dive into warlock would narrow the focus. If I went this route I think I would shoot for Bard 3/Sorcerer 6/Warlock 11. I should have a ton of utility but still pack a eldritch blast punch. Quickened eldritch blasts sound pretty vicious.
Things are coming together. Got a rough outline for race and stats below. My group goes with point buy but it should work fine. Once again feel free to comment.
Point Buy: 14, 14, 12, 12, 11, 10
Race: Elf Subrace: Eladrin
Str 10 Dex 16 Con 12 Int 12 Wis 12 Cha 14
Fey Step: You can cast the misty step spell once using this trait. You regain the ability to do so when you finish a short or long rest.
I'd recommend Lock 4 so you don't miss an ASI plus an extra cantrip, Sorc 4 for the same reason, then Bard 12 which nets you expertise twice and all the bard goodies.
Why did no one respond to this person! this sounds fun.
First, ASIs/fears are big. pick your level around mitigating disadvantages of multicasting.
Now, I have no idea what they may have wanted with 10th level magical secrets. I feel a focus on spell spam would be the more entertaining way to play this. Rolling on the chaos table as much as possible. That said lots potent low level spells and good saving throughs are what we are going to want.
1st level Warlock fey. For wisdom saves. And take it to 4th, 5th or 6th, building up EB. War caster/lucky is you if you like other wise max charisma.
Next, you broke your pact have fun with that, Sorcerer chaos. Meta magic is your pick. Take it up to 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th or 8th. ASIs max charisma if maxed resilient Dex or Con. You know why.
As for the bard part all work but who are we kidding lore as got our back as we research how to rid ourselves of this a fiction.
You are not a high end caster remember that but EB has you covered for damage, utility and control spell don't really fall off. This falls into a support build so play that way. the rp here potential here is also great to ham up a nervous wreck of a creature that ticked off a fey.
I always wanted to play a Lore Bard17/Tome Lock 3 (could be really any patron). I think to additional utility for a bard to have Book of Ancient Secrets for rituals is just amazing. Dropping some to take in sorc works too but loosing 9th level spells for me is always heartbreaking.
Backstory was going to be he was searching for knowledge/lore and happened upon a tome that sealed his pact....
I'd recommend not even bothering with what the character will look like at level 20. It is doubtful that will ever be realized.
Take snapshots at 5, 9, 11, and 14. These are common levels reached and/or end of campaign levels.
Do you care about ASI's how fast do you need to hit subclass features?
Lvl 1-5 Bard to get ASI and 3rd level spells. Lvl 6-8 Sorcerer for Metamagic Lvl 9-11 Warlock for invocations/restore spell slots at short rest. Lvl 12-14: at least 2 levels in any one of the above to either get more 3rd level options or some 4th level options, I'd put a minimum of 1 level in Bard to get the subclass feature at 6th level.
You wanna multiclass 3 caster classes but haven't maxed your main stat? That's gonna be rough. Everytime you go into another class before you pick up an ASI you're gonna fall behind and find that the stuff you gain from the early levels of all these classes aren't gonna keep up with everyone else or even just the recommended monsters your DM might throw at you.
I'm a huge fan of SorLocking, but I find it very hard to justify going into Bard as well. 3 levels before you get to pick a subclass means you have to commit so many resources for honestly, not that much.
Why did no one respond to this person! this sounds fun.
:) Thanks for the sentiment. Unfortunately, I have not found the right campaign to play this character in so he's still on the back burner but, yeah, I think the role playing potential here is fantastic. Imagine Prince Weylyn of kith'Niadh with his trusty sprite companion Appleseed doing their level best to get into as much mischief as possible.

My thinking is that once EB with quicken spell is set up the choices after that are more about what type of magic I would like as support and utility. The reason I am interested in bard is two fold. First, I envision this character as a prankster and the added skills coming along with bard would help with that. Second, the known spells added by just a few levels of bard would significantly increase the meager selection provided by sorcerer.
That said, I do have concerns regarding leveling. Waiting until 10-12th level to realize a build would be a painful crawl. One of the reasons I have not played the character yet. I think I may have to consider a more traditional sorlock build if I want to play this guy from level 1. I really want that sprite familiar so probably levels 1 to 3 as warlock pick pact of the chain and the rest sorcerer. I would so love to have those skills though...
Not if they want 9th level spells. Since that would be a level 20 thing at that point...
Generally speaking, I agree with you. However, there are certainly times where the opportunity cost of the ASI is too great considering what you'd have to give up to get it. I mentioned the 9th level spells since that seems to be a sticking point for many people. It could just as easily be a build for a campaign going to 10th level that requires a 7/3 split.
Certainly. It might be better to go sorc 4 to get the ASI and then warlock 3 before finishing sorc. I'd also be tempted to change the strength to 8 to get the charisma to 15. Amazingly, Actor is the only PHB feat that gives a half feat option for charisma, but Elven Accuracy could be enough help making up for the power discrepancy of getting to character level 11 before that next ASI that it won't feel completely terrible. Either that, or focus on buffs and other spells that don't use spell save or to hit.
Hmmm.... we might have a winner. You owe me a chicken dinner now, right? Wait, that's not how that works? ;)
Now I'm checking the interaction with the shadow sorc.
Edit. Definitely some overlap, but some interesting options too. Not enough to completely marry me to the idea, particularly when you could go Divine Soul for a little of the "Angel on the right shoulder, devil on the left" action. Hmmm. Fiendlock and Divine Soul...
If you are going full caster do not go more than 3 levels in any other class or you will lose 9th level spells. You will have the slot but not access to the spell list so no wish.

I’m thinking of doing something similar. Looking at Bard 5/Warlock 10/Sorcerer 5.
Any thoughts?
Why bard? The rest makes sense

It's always worth it to pick up the 4th level for ASI imo
