I am pretty happy with the sub-races based upon different Layers and Lords from Hell.
But I don't know if there are a kind of errata, because two (Dispater and Glasya) have both the same rules. Bugs me abit but i coan understand the coincidence.
Actually, they have different cantrips. Legacy of Dis grants thaumaturgy, while Legacy of Malbolge grants Minor Illusion.
In my opinion, however, the entire tiefling section of the UA was poorly done, especially compared to the That Old Black Magic UA, which had Infernal (a.k.a. Asmodeus) tieflings and Abyssal Tieflings.
I dislike Old Black Magic. It's too much "random" in basic abilities. Having your powers change every time you sleep makes to much delta in randomness.
The player has to keep track of 3 of a possible 18 spells their character might have every single day!
IMHO the powers Abyssal gets aren't even that good compared to the standard Tiefling. Losing Fire Resistance for 1-10 hitpoints (it's half character level).
I'm actually surprised they didn't have both subraces (Tanar'ri & Baatezu) in the core book. I'm really glad for the expanded list, it gives more options for 2ndary ability score and spells, even if it's just more Baatezu.
Have mixed feelings about 'em tbh. (I know I'm a bit late, but here's my two cents.)
Yeah, these seem way better than abyssal tiefling imo (read: consistent), and the variety is spectacular. It's also a great flavor update, attaching inherent lore and giving you a more informed base to spring off of with how you might want to interpret your tiefling character.
Thing is, though, from a purely mechanics standpoint, tiefling are already just about the most flexible player race, thanks to the variants that we already got out of the SCAG. Being able to able to cherry pick your best attribute bonus between Charisma and Dexterity is pretty phenomenal as is, considering they're pretty much the most ubiquitous stats in the game (barring certain builds and playstyles, of course). Now, picking just the right tiefling with whichever secondary attribute bump is gonna make for easy min/maxing for sure.
Overall I don't hate them; there's a lot to like. I appreciate the lore and flavor a lot. But it feels kinda weird having tiefling work for most any build under the sun while most other races stay honed to a specific handful of classes. Like how dragonborn work best with paladin builds and little else. That's all.

The Tiefling variants seemed a little meh to me, but as I've never played a Tiefling nor had any strong desire to do so (nothing against them, I just haven't been interested), I might not appreciate it as some would.
That said, the stuff about Infernal and demonic boons did interest me. It looks useful for DMs who want to spice up the vanilla cultists that your characters are probably going to kill by the dozen, or some monsters.
That is true, i will probably use them very soon in my own game, I use my own setting, but the Hellish and Abysal lords are over-all the same, and the heroes are fighting in a fallen ruined city; with a Death Knight king in the end, and plenty of villain and nasty monsters in the middle.

Yeah I'll be honest, the main reason I've payed so much attention to tiefling updates is because I have a vested interested. They're one of the weirdo "I'm a snowflake" non regularly appearing playable fantasy races, and I have a weak spot for those. Lizards in Divinity, khajiit in Elder Scrolls, etc.

Ouh, I missed that. Thanks.
