You spent some time in a structured environment learning all sorts of things. So, whether delving in a dungeon, or helping townsfolk, you have been taught what to look for and what to do. You have knowledge of monsters outside of what normal people would have. When you encounter a creature, you may make an Intelligence (Investigation) check at a DC (10 + monster's CR, rounded up) to know some information about it (up to the DM's discretion based on the degree of success).
