I haven't rolled a fighter since Next, so I can't comment too much, but I have a dwarven Champion in my games regularly, so I know they have true grit.
I've also read Battle Master and really want to try that one whenever I get the chance to play a fighter next.

Out of my back up characters I have 3 fighters lol. I have 2 that are Champion and one Battle Master. My battle master is a Firbolg and he Protection so he uses a shield. I love the maneuvers and have him with ones that rally the team, make the baddies have disadvantage, or push them away!!! He seems like he will be so much fun. We have a dual weilder Battle Master in our party right now and he is pretty badass. He can take lots of hits and Parries a lot to avoid wracking up too much damage before healing himself. Pretty good in a longer fight.

The Knight and Samurai both are way up there for me, because of the way their mechanics compliment a focused idea of what they're trying to do- knights are the concentrated tank, while the samurai is very much a heavy damage dealer and determinator- but samurai wins out for having the more interesting feature between the two.
Battlemaster for sure, but Samurai is a close second. I just think all the UA stuff needs just a smidge more polish, but that's why its playtest material.
i currently have a Goliath champion protector. he takes some big hits. i like role playing their natural competitiveness with the other tank on seeing how big a target we can pick on and survive.
I want to like the Battlemaster, but the fact that you just continue picking from the same list instead of getting access to more potent abilities as you level like the Eldritch Knight, or even Champion or PDK makes it feel lackluster to me.
I've been really keen on making an arcane archer fighter, akin to a Legolas character. I always think it's cool when you can use dex as a fighter instead of str

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
So torn! I am playing as a Gunslinger and an Arcane Archer. Gunslinger can let you with lucky dice..just deal damage upon damage upon making the DM annoyed. I find that the Archer lets me just stand back and try and control the field of battle. Depending on which Arcane shots you choose you can be a real pain in the booty.
For some reason my DM let me actually acquire an Oathbow for this character..and well...I put all the magic arrows in all the places that make people say ouchie.
Huge fan of the EK. Blastery swordmages are fine and all, but magical tanks are even better.
i don't know the bladesinger can tabk pretty well.
im in love with the champions ability the crit on a 19 and ive needed it every time. But seeing how much UA arcana has been pit out using the battlemaster stuff and looking at some of the cool maneuvers makes me choose it
I love playing fighters. Some say they are boring, but I think dying because of being squishy is no fun either. I used to like Champion best, but Battlemaster is what I am playing currently. Love the maneuvers, especially tripping and disarming. If there was one way to make BM better, I would like to see some stronger maneuvers added as you get up to higher levels.
I love having battle master so I can pair it with Polearm Master and Sentinel feats. At level 4 you're basically an UNSTOPABLE melee fighter that can control the field by keeping enemies back and moving your allies where you'd like them (plus they can move without the enemies getting AoO)! Plus the whole class scales pretty well as it levels up so you'll never feel bad. :)
I absolutely love the Eldritch Knight in order to just use that sweet true strike combo with ability at level 7.
The other archetypes are either from UA or the Gunslinger from Critical Roll.
I know this is an older post, but I just wanted to point something out for you.If you are using True Strike with War Magic you are missing out.
On your turn you cast True Strike, triggering War Magic and you take your bonus attack with advantage and roll two d20s. Sounds good right?
If you just did a normal Attack action, as a fighter you get two attacks by level 7 so you would roll two d20s anyway. So if in both scenarios you roll hits on both dice, in scenario one you only get one hit, but in scenario two you get two hits. Plus, you still have your bonus action.
It would be better to use War Magic in conjunction with something like booming blade or greenflame blade. Or something like blade ward to get resistance but still make an attack.

Actually, True Strike only works on your next turn. So you'd still make an attack this turn with War Magic, but you won't get advantage until next turn.

It's a tough call between the original Champion and Battle Master for me, but Battle Master's Maneuvers are just so much fun when they work.
Battle Master it is.

I didn't add the PDK because I didn't find it until after the poll was posted and you can't edit a poll.

Try taking the shield master feat! Use your bonus action to shove an enemy prone, if it works bingo! Advantage on your follow up attack(s)! Sheer joy!
