If you cast any of the Smite spells, do you have to activate it? Meaning can you attack and wait until you get a bonus or advantage during the 1 minute time limit before firing it off?

in 2014, all smite spells specify they activate on the next hit.
In 2024 all smite spells can only be cast on hit and they activate on said hit. Those that remain with a duration of 1 minute, have some type of lingering effect, like searing smite which can continue to cause damage at the start of the target's turn for 1 minute. Since it's cast on hit, advantage is irrelevant, you've already hit, but you can wait until you critical, at which point it will benefit from the critical hit effect.
