so... I love playing Tieflings, in 3e they used to be great rogues, and since the Feral tiefling variant come out I was wondering, can they make a good assassin rogue? I know the +2 to Dex really helps, but what about the other class features? sorry about my english, I'm Brazilian.
I'd say that both version of the feral Tieflings can be really good rogues/assassins.
The basic one, with Thaumaturgy at creation and then Darkness can be extremely good for sneaking around and infiltrating, using Thaumaturgy to distract guards and other minor enemies and at higher levels using Darkness to temporarily "pause" the fight or make an escape.
The variant, on the other hand, can be a more "up to the face" kind of assassin, getting Charm person at 3rd level and Enthrall at 5th which can come in really useful to just walk in from the front door. Vicious mockery can be extremely useful in combat at low levels, as it would still do the same damage as a dagger, but also give disadvantage to the target. The Burning hands you get at 3rd level can also come in handy, while quite "flashy" for an assassin, in case you have several enemies closing on you; with some clever positioning being able to hit multiple enemies for some sure damage could make quite a difference.
So, yeah, Feral Tieflings is definitely a very good race for an assassin, not only for the +2 Dex, but also for the other race features and the +1 Int, which always help with Investigation.
