I need some help with making my character for my group's next campaign. I'll be playing a Duergar Rogue/Fighter with a majority of my levels in Rogue and taking the Scout archetype and focusing on using the heavy crossbow, but the trouble I'm having is about which class to take my first level in. I've weighed some of the options and the biggest high points for my starting being Rogue is one more skill and Dexterity saving throw proficiency, and Fighter would give me Constitution saving throw proficiency and 2 more hit points. My group using the starting equipment set up from the Player's Handbook that's based on class which makes Fighter the only way for me to start with a heavy crossbow. If anyone could weigh in and give me some opinions on which way to lean for my starting class it would be much appreciated!
And if anyone has good background suggestions for a Duergar born the the elemental plane of earth that would be nice too!
1. As you mentioned, you start with a heavy crossbow, along with armor and other things that would be fairly useful early on.
2. Fighting style at level 1, grabbing archery will help you nail those early game shots when your AB is low
Another question worth asking since you didn't mention it, you never said what you were grabbing with fighter for your archtype, which might affect the choice.
Also if I remember right, Duergar has a history of being slaves for some races, so maybe an escapee through some planar portal? Or maybe you just came from a more noble family that had ties there since you sold various exotic riches from the Underdark.
I'm not sure how long the campaign will last, or how fast we will level up, so I didn't put thought into what Fighter archetype I might pick. After looking over the options, Arcane Archer would be good with the archer idea (if I can convince the DM to let me use a crossbow instead of the bow), Battlemaster is my personal favorite and is probably what I'll go with, but Samurai would be interesting. With the dour and determined culture of the Duergar I think doing a take on Samurai could make a cool character.
I had completely forgotten that the Duergar were slaves before they were slavers! That gives me a great starting point, and might give me some good inspiration to use the Haunted One background.
I find it a very hard choice myself but I ended up with fighter under the assumption that con (nasty stuff)+str (forced move) saves are adequately stronger than dex (damage)+int (hardly anything) to warrant the loss of a skill. I think Evasion also decreases the need of dex save since I would rather have well rounded defenses than one great and one useless defense.
