So my DM, of the last five years or so, has picked up Tomb of Annihilation along with several add-ons from DMs guild and various other sources. During our session zero we decided to go "Meat Grinder" mode. He also added an additional quirk; we were starting play at level 2 and we drew from a hat to choose our quirks, mine happened to be "forced" multiclassing. Truthfully I was excited because I don't often multiclass.
So as of now I'm currently playing a Variant Human, with the Urchin Background. I took the Magic Initiate (Druid) feat for my starting feat, and the cantrips Guidance and Mending, and the 1st level spell Goodberry.
My 1st level was Rogue, so I scattered my skills about in an array suitable for jungle habitat and survival (expertise in survival and perception). My second level I chose Life Cleric, mostly because it complimented the fact that our party is lacking a support/heal type, and also because it is making survival effort much more tolerable than without. Create or Destroy Water and Purify Food and Drink have saved our butts twice already, and the added benefit of a 4hp heal from Goodberry is also wonderful.
From an RP standpoint my character could very well go either way, and from and optimization-ish standpoint I don't see the harm in leveling one or the other.
A brief backstory: The character had grown up without a home in Baldur's Gate, where his parents "left" him. He moved all around the big city and became a somewhat familiar face. A Temple dedicated to Lathander took him in during his late teen years after he had been seen trying to help out around the temple (totally faking it) and sneaking off for shelter somewhere inside during the colder seasons. During his brief time in their care, having difficulty shaking off his urchin/thievish tendencies, he stole from a patron to buy himself a more suitable set of clothing for the coming winter. This person from whom he stole happened to be of some importance. When they caught him stealing, they had him turned over to a "Minder" of sorts (think probationary officer), and effectively that leads us into the adventures going to Chult.
So that begs to the question of which class I should level into next. I do know I will like to hit 4th level in one class before continuing to the other (if at all) so as not to delay the ASI further, just kinda stuck on which way to go.
My stats are good enough for both Rogue and Cleric (we had a special rolling system since we chose Meat Grinder mode) so those aren't major concerns.
STR:14 DEX:19 CON:15 Int:19 WIS:18 CHA:15
As you can see, I ended up with some wicked-good rolls.
I've looked into the Thief utilizing Fast Hands and the Healer's Kit, considering the Healer feat. Kind of an epic field medic to be honest.
I have also considering taking up Arcane Trickster for additional spells and more shenanigans of the Rogue Variety.
But Cleric is also very enticing, with the added Channel Divinity feature and more spells/spell slots. Not to mention a newly "devout" priest of Lathander is worthy of some good RP.
I am currently playing a Phantom Rogue with the Healer feat (custom lineage). If you plan on multiclassing into cleric I would strongly encourage the Healer feat as you level 1 choice. While I understand the Goodberry life cleric dynamic I think you will find that the healer feat to be the better route. Once you remove the life cleric goodberry combo you may find a different cleric more useful (Arcana for booming blade/gfb, Nature for more proficiencies and druid cantrip, Twilight for all of that).
As a multiclassed rogue cleric you will always be short on spell slots. If you then use them always for goodberry then you will end up even shorter for using them in actual combat. Your cleric level will default to just healing and maybe shield proficiency.
Even then life cleric gets 10 4hp goodberries per long rest (40 hp). A level 1 cleric with the healer feat user has for a four person party 4 per short rest of 1d6+5 kit uses (4* 8.5 = 34 hp) so if you do 1 short rest a day you end up with 68 hp of healing. It also continues to scale with level so it stays relevant for the whole campaign.
In the campaign I am currently in our druid didn't cast a healing spell until 4th level because my rogue was doing all the healing for the party.
Sounds like you have a pretty good plan but I suggest you take another feat as only getting Goodberry seams like a short sighted gain. Healer feat is solid, with your ability scores you can do any multi class well. I played an arcane trickster rogue / trickery cleric in Mad Mage and pretty much destroyed it. It was a tone of fun as well.
You seem very focused on healing and I'm not sure what you want out of rogue....I would imagine going 5 lvls of Gloomstalker Ranger or Fey Wanderer / cleric might pan out nicely in the jungle. You would get Goodberry and a lot more offensive firepower without having to use a Mage initiate feat for it.
You could even do Druid / Cleric for more spell slots....possibly Swashbuckler / Bard for versatility and support with like the Healer Feat. Just a couple ideas to consider.
i had an idea like this but i played it out as by day they were a cleric, and then by day they would rouge up and go get what they would need for the next day. I did play as an elf for the less need for sleep
I would like to play an Inquisitive Rogue / Knowledge Cleric. The synergy isn't great, but the theme interests me. Young, roguish noble, younger son, sent to train as a priest. He commits wholeheartedly to his faith. The church leadership recognizes that he has a unique skill-set which could make him a powerful agent against heretics and enemy faiths.
Took the Arcane Trickster subclass for Rogue and bumped Dex and Int up to 20 with the first ASI.
Primary focus stayed on track with surviving the harsh environment of Chult, mitigating a lot of the survival aspect in general. Free daily use of Goodberry keeps the party (and Hadrosaur) nourished, and Create or Destroy Water keeps everyone hydrated on the rare occasions there is no rain. Arcane Trickster has been essential in dealing with weird puzzles and traps, and general mischeif.
Sparing the complexities of the RP, the character is having a grand ol' time exploring Chult, watching his friends die, trying to make babies, open an orphanarium, and establish a network of contacts in the pirate community to learn how to sail.
I play variant aasimar rogue1/death cleric2 of Bhaal. As a fluff idea I don’t use healing spells. Now Im planing to get two levels in rogue to get inquisitive archetype and thane level up only as cleric. For now its great fun both melee and range combat. We rolled abilities and I got crazy s11 dex15 con16 int14 wis18 and cha14 so multiclassing don’t hurt as much :D I read opinions both classes don’t fit well but I’m not kind of powergammer and from role play point of view for many gods it is perfectly normal multiclass option.

So...suggestions? =D

Ended up going Rogue 4/Cleric 1 so far.
