Hey guys! My DM wants to play a level 20 Tomb of Horrors run-through where he has expressly stated he is going to try to kill us the best he can. He also has 30+ years experience. I'm terrified.
The group (though not set in stone) is going to be a barbarian, fighter, and survival cleric. I'm not sure of the subclasses for the other two. People are staying away from wizards and sorcerers because our DM is notorious for trying to take away component bags and arcane focuses. I've taken Rogue because someone has to open things up and find all the 120382984723 inevitable traps. Also sneak attack.
I'm crowd sourcing this because I've only been playing D&D for about 8 months, and I want to make sure I can keep up. Anything from WotC is allowed, and magic items will be negotiated. Any suggestions to keep me and my team alive as long as possible?
If your worried more about the traps, I would recommend taking Arcane Trickster for your subclass. That way you can use mage hand to disarm the traps.
If your worried about the components bag or arcane focus, keep in mind thats only needed for spells with a Material component. There are still alot of spells, especially utility spells, that are just Verbal and/or Somatic.
Have one person play a wizard. Take four days before the adventure to use Wish to Clone the Party. Keep coming back every 124 days and see how far you get each time.
Take 3 levels of Zealot Barbarian, then have everyone else play a Cleric with Revivify prepared. Botched your perception and got killed? Zap! You're back. Pressed the wrong symbol and got disintegrated? Zap! You're feeling fine. /s
Old school dungeons worked best with a standard 4 Cleric-Fighter-Magic User-Thief areas covered. You should expect challenges for all the areas.
A Warlock/Sorcerer with Tome of Chain for a familiar (to act sacrificial scout) may be a better choice than having two meat shields, if you really don't want a wizard.

And that's all I have to say about that.
