I'm a kobold swashbuckler 4/hexblade 2 in an expanded Ravenloft campaign expected to go to level 15. The rest of the party is an Artificer/Fighter, a Bloodhunter/Fighter, a Barbarian/Fighter, and a Cleric/Wizard (not certain about the subclasses for the last two).
While I'm a longtime 3.5/PF player, this is my first 5e game, and I'm not certain of the best approach for levels. At SB 4/War 2 I'm enjoying the flexibility of using Booming Blade on isolated opponents, creating flanking opportunities for allies, supporting vulnerable allies with Eldritch Blast, and combining Pack Tactics and Hexblade's Curse to fish for crits. As a SB he plays the face role so I get some good RP.
From SB 4/War 2, my initial plan was to go 4/4 in each to pick up Pact of the Blade for RP purposes and then my second attribute boost. But, Uncanny Dodge and an extra d6 for sneak attack are probably too appealing for my next level, bringing me to 5/2. After that, I just don't know. I have Misty Steps from Fey Touched, but picking up Invisibility with Warlock 3 seems useful, and if I'm at 3rd level shouldn't I just go to 4 to pick up the ability boost? Or am I going too far down the warlock path?
I've kind of run into this same issue with a similar build. For me going 4 levels into Hexblade then led me to go to 5th level for the 3rd level spell slot and Thirsting Blade invocation for the extra attack. Hexblade is so front loaded you may just want to jump out at 2nd level and be done with it but if you do run it up I would definitely go at least 9 levels in Swasbuckler for the extra sneak attack dice and Panache ability.
Yes, I've been thinking about Thirsting Blade at level 5 as well. More attacks equal more chances to hit and use sneak attack , albeit it only once per turn, but it also means giving up Booming Blade damage. However, in most combats we tend to get swarmed pretty quickly, so opportunities to provoke the extra BB damage aren't as often as I originally thought. So many choices! I do like the options I have and don't feel like a one-trick pony, even if I'm not fully maximized for each.
Hey I'm a new player and I'm also building my character with this exact multiclass build, and I'm facing the same dilemma of how far do I go down the warlock route as well. But so far with my research I saw someone suggest a really cool combo of invocations with Devil's sight and Darkness which I think you'd need more levels in warlock for. But it feels like it might compliment the sneak attack ability because you just pretty much get advantage on any attack you make in that darkness. And if you pick up a feat like duel wielding or crossbow expert you can squeeze in some extra attacks, if you can't grab thirsting blade invocation as well.
Like I said though I'm new, so I may just be talking nonsense, but just excited to join in the discussion since I'm planning the same build!
