I've created a halfling rogue recently, who starts with 17 dex at level 1. I am planning to make her a swashbuckler and then pick up a half feat (probably squat nimbleness, but could choose piercer if I get proficiencies from other sources) to increase dex at level 4. I have all the skill proficencies I need/want at level 1 except for one of them (I'm not proficient in athletics). The character I have created is very bold and I'm thinking about having her serve as a front-line character
What weapon setup would be good? I'm considering three alternatives
1. Having a rapier, and having the off-hand empty. It feels most thematic for how I imagine my character, but I don't really see the benefit of having an empty off-hand. It feels like I'm "wasting" some of her potential. The benefit I can see is that I don't have to multiclass, and I can possibly get a little more creative with choices for my off-hand (since I want to play more creatively) but I don't see how it could be applied. 2. Multiclass one level into a ranger (or possibly fighter) to get shield proficiency, then fight with rapier and shield. Is it necessary to have a shield on rogues when you are fighting in the front-line due to the rogues low hp and AC? 3. fighting with two short swords (or possibly two rapiers, with the dual wielder feat) and maybe multiclass into fighter to get the two weapon fighting style. It seemsgood to have two chances at applying sneak attack per round, but I have heard so many complaints about two weapon fighting that I'm a little weary (I can't use cunning action for example)
Taking two shortswords gives you the option of using your second sword to get off a sneak attack if you miss with your main hand weapon. If you hit with the first attack, and need your bonus action, you don't use the second attack. If you use the playtest weapon masteries you can take Nick with scimitars (UA Rogue has proficiency with all finesse martial weapons) to allow you to take the extra attack without using your bonus action which makes that the clearly superior option.
I like to wait till level 4 and just take a dual wield or crossbow expert feat.
Then 2 rapiers or rapier and hand crossbow, (crossbow feat explicitly allows for it to be used as a secondary, and ignore reload, AND ignore 5ft disadvantage, all of which are important if you're going for a melee fighter).
Till then.... rapier is what I like but you can use two simple weapons of your choice, most go two scimitars.
