My friend has a level 4 soon-to-be level 5 Arcane Trickster Rogue (we started at level 1). It is our first time playing D&D. I wanted to see if anyone has some tips for him. In terms of how to play his character/and tips for building his character going forward.
He is a Forest Gnome Arcane Trickster
Beginning Prof- Persuasion, Sleight of Hand, Investigation, Performance,
You’re really missing out not taking the Find Familiar Spell. Other spells I’d recommend taking as that person levels up are shadow blade, misty step, fly, major image, greater invisibility and black tentacles. If they have access to it, I’d recommend Booming Blade over Ray of Frost unless you’re really going for ranged attacks. I’m not sure what said person is doing with crossbow expert, but I guess the next step would be sharpshooter and maybe Fighting Initiate: Archery. If you pick up disguise self I would recommend the actor feat to go with the forgery skills. Everything else about your character is pretty much set in stone by now, so unless the DM will let you make bigger changes to stats and the like that’s really all I got.
A great feat to get would be the Ritual caster feet, Wizard. If you eventually get all the ritual spells you almost double your possible casts.
I am personally not a fan of the crossbow and just run with the short bow to keep things light. So if your could possibly recon or redo that crossbow expert feat in to the ritual caster feat. You immediately get 2 first level spells. You also get the ability to cast ritual spells at half your total level.(thus you could cast 2rd level spells right off if you get them)

And run that dex up as high as possible.
