Hey all, I'm currently in a game playing a level 5 Glasya Tiefling Swashbuckler rogue and I'm tempted to multi class into one level of Bard. What I'm after is a bit more utility and support based: Healing word, bardic inspiration and the free skill one gets when they take a level in bard, I plan on taking Insight then using the rogue's Expertise feature at lvl 6 to get that score even higher. The party currently has a full Sincerity Bard but extra support is always good to have. I suppose I'm in debate if the multi class dip is worth it since the party is only going to level 12 maybe 13 so my options for feats and ASI are limited. Current stats are Str: 8 Dex: 18 Con: 14 Int: 8 Wis: 10 Cha: 18 I had also possibly planned a 1 level Sorc. Dip or Magic Initiate feat to pick up Booming Blade and other damage spells later in the levels or something like Inspiring Leader.
Everyone always says that you shouldn't interrupt Rogue progression because it affects sneak attack, but I say yea, a few level dips (or even many levels) away from Rogue can make really fun characters. Swords bard sounds like a great fit with swashbuckler, if you are willing to spend three levels.
I'd probably do it because I'd value the utility more than the SA dice going up a level sooner. That's the decision though, deciding if the juice is worth the squeeze and only you can answer that question.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
Yeah, I know. I've never multiclassed a character before. It's gaining a bit more support utility vs. getting another ASI to boost a stat or get a feat.
Usually, my advice to people looking to multi-class is to not do it. Most of them ask "I'm <insert class name>, what should I MC to?" They have no goals to the MC, they just think it's somehow better and usually, it is not. You seem to have specific ideas as to what you want, and what the price of the MC is (delaying abilities). So, now you have to ask yourself if you're going to use the utility you gain enough to offset the lower damage and what not from delaying your rogue progression. You've already got one bard, so are you going to be using your inspiration much? Will you be healing much? Will you use the other spells much?

I believe you need two levels in sorcerer in order to access metamagic. You’d already be stretching yourself so thin with bard. Normally a bard and rogue really wouldn’t mix, although i see where you are coming from with swashbuckler’s charisma. Combined with the fact you already have a bard in your party, I would be tempted to say not to do it… which is “crzy” since I know crzyhawk never usually does but is now!
Your party might be better off talking to your bard if you need something specific from him like healing if that person isn’t providing it. Just a thought.
could always go with a feat to pick up healing word as well.

Since your campaign will end at 12-13, I'd advice you to get to at least 11 levels of Rogue to get Reliable Talent, one of the best Rogue features.
Level 13: The level 13th Swashbuckler feature isn't really amazing and +1d6 sneak attack damage isn't worth much either. I'm not sure how good a single level dip of Bard is going to be, and with your high Charisma, I'd look for Warlock, which gets a great variety of abilities on level 1, making them one of the best 1-level dips in the game. Personally, I'd go for Genie Warlock, which will allow you to add your proficiency bonus to your damage, which outclasses the +1d6 sneak attack damage easily. You will also get some useful spells, including Booming Blade which combos well with the mobility of the Rogue, and especially the Swashbuckler. It's well worth it versus the 13th level of Rogue.
Level 12: At level 12 you get a feat, which might be important, based on the rest of your build. However, with 2 level dips your choices expand, Warlock is still great (you will 2 Eldritch Invocations with 2 levels), 2 levels of Bard will give you Jack of all trades (great for more skills).
Since you will end at 12-13, I wouldn't advice getting 3 dips, because you will miss Reliable Talent.

Three levels is a lot since we're only going to level 12 maybe 13. Currently party is at level 5 with 6 on the horizon.

It's mostly used if the bard and cleric go down we have one more safety net to get them back up other than potions which we might not always have.
Taking Meta-magic wasn't a concern. I was only ever gonna do a one level dip.

True, but I'd only get the one spell from the bard list and the slot to use it.
