I'm about to join a fairly new game at level four. They have been playing for a few weeks. I'm bringing a Revived Rouge and am seriously eyeballing a few levels in bard. Probably a Whispers bard for the rp flavor and 2d6 of extra damage from psi blades to help offset the stall in sneak attack dice. Though i could also just go for the classic Swords bard because of obvious reasons. I figure I will likely take 3 levels in bard unless someone points out a good reason to take more.
I am struggling to figure out when the best time to take the levels would be. Should i stagger them? Do them all in a row? wait until i gain a particular rouge feature first? Help!
Extra info: I'm not entirely sure what the max level will be. the DM says its pretty nebulous what level we will end on but that a min of 14 is a safe bet. I'm joining a fairly large group with a good class mix. (another rogue, a pally, wizard, druid and artificer.) I plan on being melee, other rogue is ranged. I enjoy rp and character flavor as well as using utility spells in creative ways to break up the monotony of standard rogue combat. I have my heart set on the Revived subclass and wont change it to min/max- but i want to use what I'm given as best I can.
I personally would go to level 4 on your rogue before dipping into bard. I have played a swashbuckler mixed with swords bard and it worked very well. at four I moved into bard till level 3 where I choose the swords bard, back to rogue. I did end up going to 6 in swords bard later for the second attack and the refreshing of the bard resources on short rests.
as I said, the mix worked extremely well that gave me everything of both swashbuckler and AT with the added flavors of the bard.
Regardless of if this is 2014 or 2024 Rogue, I would at minimum get your 5th level in Rogue to pick up Uncanny Dodge as well as bump your Sneak Attack pool to 3d6 before doing any multiclassing, this way you have the benefit of UD to lower damage when able. If you can wait longer than that, though, I getting to level 7 Rogue will again increase your SA pool to 4d6 and give you that precious Evasion. The latter is desirable, but the former at least gives you a highly valuable tool to fill your reaction with; but, all of that said, it really depends on if you need UD to keep on your feet or not.
