I dont intend to complicate things further, but dont daggers and darts (thrown) still retain the ability to sneak attack? Or are they only sneak attack compatible in melee?
I think possibly using a feat slot to allow thrown weapons in general, or perhaps a higher tier class feature? There is already a feat that changes two-weapon fighting.
both weapons are sneak attack capable regardless of how the attack is delivered. dagger and darts have the "finesse" property and dart also comes from the "ranged weapon" table.
Haha, sounds like too much fun. Probably need to flavor the net as being spiked or razored in some fashion to explain the sneak attack damage haha. Or perhaps its just a really heavy net?
Unfortunately, the conventional wisdom is that a weapon can be either melee or ranged, and the table it is found in, defines its type.
Hand axe is a melee weapon that can be thrown. Sneak attack specifies finesse or ranged weapon which hand axe and many others are not.
Bear in mind that a ranged weapon does not allow Attacks of Opportunity. I understand most folks consider this to be the reason hand axes(etc) were excluded from the rogues sneak attack arsenal.
You might want to look at that subclass again. If you get to level 6 and u take 3 levels in rogue and three 3 levels in either fighter or ranger it opens up a world of possibilities and multiple attacks per turn. And there are feats that stack to this. My level 5 character is pretty broken. 4 rouge /1 ranger. Does about 20 to 30 points of damage first round and 15 to 20 every round after. Since he is a sniper character he is hard to get to and has a high mo ment speed in case I have to run away. My goal is assassin gloom stalker which is fairly dumb because of the abilities each class awards. If we continue even higher I'm thinking of picking up some levels in druid too
ha ha I just realized "net" is a "ranged weapon" and thus is eligible for sneak attack damage!
You would have to find a way to get around the "always at a disadvantage" problem that the net has. You can never do sneak attack damage when you have disadvantage, Traditionally that means at least one of two feats. Sharpshooter: to remove disad. for long range attacks (5-15 ft for a net), and Crossbow Expert to remove disad for using ranged in melee.
Personally I would probably take a Goblin with a heavy crossbow or longbow, and then maybe multiclass into Fighter or ranger to get added benefits those would have.
Small Creatures have disadvantage on Attack rolls with heavy Weapons. A heavy weapon’s size and bulk make it too large for a Small creature to use effectively.
For Feats, you need to get Skulker, and Sharpshooter, these will make you deal maximum damage (and blow past cover) as well as not revealing your location from shooting.
Sharpshooter is not a great feat on a Rogue unless you multiclass with enough levels to get extra attack. You get the benefits of ignoring long range and cover, but the +10 damage bonus will bring your average damage down if you have 3 or more sneak attack dice. After 5 levels of Rogue an ASI will generally boost damage more than the sharpshooter feat.
Melee thrown weapons with finesse e.g darts count. So sneak attack also if the weapon has the thrown property you can use sharpshooter with it.
You can only use sharpshooter with missile weapons. You can not use it with thrown melee weapons. Being thrown or not thrown is irrelevant for sharpshooter, it has to ba a missile weappon.
Note a dart is a missile weapon, a dagger is still a melee weapon. Both are finesse, both are thrown, both qualify for sneak attack but only the dart qualifies for sharpshooter.
ha ha I just realized "net" is a "ranged weapon" and thus is eligible for sneak attack damage!
Nets typically impose disadvamntage on the attack roll either due to being at long range or for using a ranged weapon within 5 feet of a hostile creature (long range on a net is anything more than 5 feet). Disadvantage cancels sneak attack.
To use a net without disadvantage you generally need one of three feats. Sharpshooter allows you to throw a net at long range without disadvantage. Gunner and Crossbow expert allow you to throw a net in melee without disadvantage.
Personally, I’d recommend Ranger (Gloom Stalker), with dips into Fighter (Arcane Archer) and Rogue (Inquisitive), as well as a 1 level dip into Cleric (Twilight). While Rogue (Swashbuckler) could be better, mechanically speaking, it would require yet another strong stat in order to be truly effective. Meanwhile, Rogue (Inquisitive) pairs much better with Wisdom-reliant builds. Dexterity, Wisdom, and Intelligence should be your three main stats to worry about. If you can afford a fourth strong stat, have that stat be Constitution — and don’t make this your dump stat, as many Ranger spells require concentration, including Hunter’s Mark, it’s best one.
If you take at least 7 levels in Ranger (Gloom Stalker) and also take Resilient (Constitution), you’ll be proficient in all 3 common Saving Throws (Dexterity, Constitution, & Wisdom), as well as Strength - the fourth most common Saving Throw.
1 level in Cleric (Twilight) will give you 300 feet of Darkvision as well as Advantage on Initiative rolls. Also, Ranger (Gloom Stalker) will allow you to add your Wisdom modifier to your Initiative roll, which will pair very nicely with that advantage. Plus, on your first turn in combat with Ranger (Gloom Stalker), you’ll be able to attack one additional time and deal an extra 1d8 damage if that additional attack lands.
3 levels of Fighter (Arcane Archer) will give you 2 Arcane Shots. Take whichever 2 strike your fancy. Just remember that the Spell Save DCs for these use your Intelligence modifier. Also, don’t forget about having Action Surge from Fighter.
You’ll be able to take two Fighting Styles - one with Ranger and one with Fighter. Take Archery with the one you get from Fighter and take two Druid Cantrips with Ranger.
3 levels of Rogue will give you 2d6 Sneak Attack bonus, and with a high Wisdom score, 3 levels of Rogue (Inquisitive) will dramatically increase your chances of triggering your Sneak Attack bonus, through Insightful Fighting, especially if you have Expertise in Insight. You’ll almost always trigger it this way. Make sure to target the bosses first, so you can free up some of your bonus actions for other things. Action economy is key. Make the most of yours.

All missile weapons can be used in sneak attacks, so darts can be used because they are a missile weapon. Note RAW nets can be used too, but it is unclear how they would damage an opponent.
Melee weapons can only be used if they have the finesse property. Dagger has the finesse property so dagger can be used.

Alternatively, you can take 3 levels of monk and have a teammate throw a net at you then deflect it for 20/60 range and martial arts damage on top of the sneak attack damage.

Tabaxi has climb speed; multiclass ranger (hunter); volley sneak attack at I think 11th level.

Jesus Saves!... Everyone else takes damage.

lmao a Rogue sniping people by throwing a net at them XD
I want to try this now

Thrown weapons have a range increment and are thus ranged weapons when thrown.

sounds like a dip into ranger might be well worth it.
Dagger would count.
The attack needs to be made with a ranged or finesse weapon.
That discounts throwing hammers, but not daggers.
Daggers are finesse weapons.
