So, I was wanting to post this character to get some feedback on it.
It is a Half-elf rogue2/fighter 1 so far.
Str: 12 (Rolled 12)
Dex:18 (Rolled 17 +1 Racial)
Con 16 (Rolled 15 +1 Racial)
Int: 12 (Rolled 12)
Wis: 12 (Rolled 12)
Cha: 18 (Rolled 16 +2 Racial)
I aim to take Swashbuckler at 3rd rogue and at 4th take the feat Magic Initiate. I figured my main stats are rather well at this level so a feat would be nice. My initial idea was to play him as a Whip rogue, but the archetype requires me to be within 5 feet. So, Magic Initiate came to mind to obtain Booming Blade and Hex. I am still kind of wanting the whole Whip playstyle, for when I do not move in and attack then duck out with the Swashbuckler ability. But sadly the range on Booming Blade is also 5 feet. To compensate for this, I was thinking spell sniper to be able to hit with the booming blade using the whip. I know whip is hardly optimal, but I much prefer thematic characters.
As for his sudden ability to use magic, flavoring it as: He's so quick with his strikes (With whip or shortsword) that he generates energy which transfers to his weapon to produce strikes like lightning! That being with the fact that he will most likely only attack once. ( I use a shield in my offhand, I like to live!... and I already took the dueling style. So, +2, Woot!)
So, being feat intensive to make this work, I figured going fighter for a few levels and the battlemaster archetype would be ideal. Or EK? But also grant me some more ASI/feats. Was thinking War caster and maybe sentinel? Seeing as I'd only require 2 ASI bumps to max my Dex and Cha to 20. My plan as of writing this is for a 12 Rogue and 8 Fighter Or Rogue 14/ Fighter 6? I know most characters never make it to 20, but one can hope and I suppose planning is never a bad idea!
So, again. I would love some feedback as to ways of improving this build. Should I forget the whip and the need for spell sniper and take up something else? I am only asking this in a sense for some cool RP and character flavor. I know the most optimal way should be DW Rapiers as a Swashbuckler. But, c'mon.. Dual rapiers?!? xD Thanks again for all of you who took the time to read this. Hope I didn't come off as an ass or anything. Thank you again!
EDIT!: Oh, yeah. The plan was to take this path toward level 10.
Hm, I suppose alternatively I could go Arcane Trickster and pick up the Mobile feat. I just lose the swashbuckler's added ability to make sneak attacks. Hmm.. possibilities!
I think sage advice may have better details about booming blade and spell sniper.
Spell sniper does seem to work with green flame blade (but i assume it works on the second part of the spell involving a secondary target)
There also seems to be some annoyance around warcaster and opportunity attacks (from what i read).
I would possibly suggest skipping the whip in favor of a shortsword. I would suggest leaning on the battlemaster more than eldritch knight unless you are in need of more spells. Skip spell sniper and get mobility. Only problem is this requires a higher intelligence. I think both eldritch knight and arcane trickster need 13 int, but could be wrong.
I think i would build him as rogue (swashbuckler) multiclass bladesinger. Perhaps a small fighter dip for action surge.
Or if you dont want to bump int up. Perhaps try rogue / bard / fighter. Might get you what youre after.

As a note if you go Half Elf variant High elf you can start off with Booming Blade as your cantrip.....
