Hi lm currently playing a changling swashbuckler rouge. Im thinking of dropping a few lvls in fighter for more damage and survivabilty, no one in the party knows shes a changling and untill she goes down the first time they wont find out. So Im leaning twards second wind for some help not going down. I have never multiclassed or Played a rouge so im wandering what lvl i should start going fighter and how many i should put in. Im currently lvl4 rouge and im thinking of 2 or 3 lvls in fighter possibly samurai.
You know it says die and not fall unconscious or go to sleep. Being reduced to 0 or less hp only causes you to fall unconscious and start making death saves.
"A rightful place awaits you in the Realms Above, in the Land of the Great Light. Come in peace, and live beneath the sun again, where trees and flowers grow."
— The message of Eilistraee to all decent drow.
"Run thy sword across my chains, Silver Lady, that I may join your dance.”
lvl 5 swashbuckler -> lvl 6 battlemaster -> lvl x swashbuckler (or lvl 8 battlemaster for extra ASI)
lvl 5 give uncanny dodge which half 1 attack damage as long you can see the opponent/ have reaction. Which much better survivbility skill then second wind. lvl 6 fighter for ASI + extra attack will increase your damage output by alot. battlemaster manuevers: Riposte: if enemy melee mis you can use reaction to attack them and apply sneak attack again, allowing you to do 2 sneak attack per round. Trip attack: knock you opponent prone now all mlee attack with advantage. precision: increase your attack roll.
Why is it such a problem for the party to find out you are a Changeling? Unless this race is something completely different in your campaign world, the UA says they are some sort of "personality nomads", not body snatchers. I don't see anything nefarious being a Changeling, when races like Tieflings, Dragonborn etc. are part of the world's societies.
Also, why not keep up the deception and tell them you are a cursed Elf? the physique looks very similar and the curse could explain the strange eyes the Changelings have. You could tell the fellow players you are hiding the "elven look", because you are afraid of what people think about the curse behind an "Alter Self" magic spell. Some high Insight rolls would be necessary to expect something fishy (or you not being able to use all the limits of the spell or faking the use of a Alter Self magic ring that is actually not magic on closer inspection).
When it comes to multi-classing, I would go with an archetype that fits into a story (unless you play in a medieval feudal Japan style game world, I don't see how you could suddenly become a Samurai type fighter). Perhaps you character can train with the local town's guard and experience the benefits of standardized training (Battlemaster) or he befriends a local prize fighter and duellist (Champion).
Just wanting more hit points should not be the only reason to be a fighter (IMHO).
In my dms world changlings are basically non existant, because they were untrusted and hunted down like body snatchers. The world we play in is realy dark themed and some of us including our teafling deal with racism. And i was leaning samurai for fighting spirit because more advantage= more sneek attack
thanks for the advice i enjoy the outside opinions
If racism / distrust of foreign ideas is a problem, perhaps not samurai? Your sure to be looked at suspiciously acting like one unless your campaign is Oriental Adventures in nature.
Instead of fighter, how about 3 levels of gloomstalker - not survivability exactly but invisible to darkvision means you become the batman. a night attack means automatic advantage for you and makes it almost improbable you cant escape when you want to.
If you go fighter, 3 champion gives you crits 19+ and crits are clear cutting chainsaw enablers with sneak attacks, damage dice doubling on a 5 die sneak is a 10d6 hit. Of course if the target shrugs that off run :).
Enjoy whatever you choose.

Hope this helps a little.
