I don't agree with that. Malleable Illusion is very DM dependant and can be confusing. it can be useful or useless. Phantasmal Creatures is going to be useful constantly, is straight forward, and not DM dependant. I think it's a change for the better.
Illusion, as a school, is very DM dependent. If you are going to have a confining DM (the kind of DM that would suck the utility out of Malleable Illusion), then Phantasmal Creature isn’t enough to make the school worthwhile.
Now that I agree with. I'm generally not a fan of illusion as a specialty, that being one reason, but another that I personally struggle to work up clever ideas for them. I'd rather play almost any other wizard. That said, I think some of the stuff I'd rather play has less potential than an illusionist.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

It gives me a mental challenge that I enjoy. I’m not a big fan of “point and click” game mechanics (which is why I disliked 4e).
war wizard with bonuses to initiative, AC, and saves is quite strong. IDK how theyve been continually rated so low.
because it's passive. Init bonus is almost criminally underrated, and the bonus to conc saves is amazing. But, it's not an active choice that players get to make. It's always on so people label it as boring. I think Warwizard is amazing really, and one of my favorite subclasses.
