Well on 2e the default mage was not a specialist but he could choose to be a specialist right there on the next page.
With all schools listed there with their requirements and all. The thing with Wizards as with Priests is the matter of choice. If you have only 4 choices you take from their flavour. It also creates complications to current campaigns that want to shift to 2024 rules and they can't, I for example have a Transmuter in my group and cannot tell them to change because of the Transmuter not being an option, and to make matters worse we play Dragonlance and him being a Red robe the only other option really is illusion (which he doesn't like). Same for Priests not all gods have a portfolio that covers these domains they put there. And before you say i sound like an old timer, I am. I don't think a priest of Chemosh or Myrkur should have Love domain just because he can. Domains as in all things RP should be at least remotely relevant to a god's portfolio or at least make common sense.
They should have included more options for these two classes specifically. The others would understand :D
You can totally shift to 2024 rules. Just use the same Transmuter as 2014. It's intended to work that way. Maybe just update the Savant feature because all the new ones have the, so it would make sense. But other than that, subclasses that are not in the PHB can easily be played with the 2024 rules. Maybe a couple are tricky, but the Transmuter isn't one of them.

I thought about it and discussed it with my player. I just wanted first to see if they will release any information about when are we expected to see the new subclasses, but apparently they haven't said anything yet or at least I haven't seen it.

Nothing concrete, but they did say which new books they want to print for next year, and they mentioned new subclasses in them. I forgot which book specifically, but they did say that. And I'd be shocked if they don't include the other 4 specialist wizards in it.
Honestly I wish they would have left off all of the 'specialist' wizards and gone with stuff like bladesinger, war wizard, etc.
Yeah, "Specialist" wizard could be a single subclass for all the schools of magic if you work the abilities correctly. Something like at level 3 a subclass you can choose is "specialist" - specialists select one school of magic. They get xyz abilities when casting spells from that school.

They said some subclasses and other character choices will be in the FR player’s book. But they didn’t say which ones.
It wont be this way due to greed but all missing 2014 sub classes, feats, invocations, races should be in the next book.Catch people up to 2014 quick instead of forcing players to buy 10 books to get to where they were. Then produce actually new content after that.

I don’t know if it’s greed. There’s just lots of stuff. It’s not practical to put it all in one book. They only have so much staff to work on it, so many people laying out the pages, etc. Plus, books can only be so big before they become unweildy.

Players supplements are pretty normal in the RPG world. Most the feats all they are doing is slapping a +1 to a few stats on it and calling it a day. Unless the subclass had big issues they wont be making large changes with them, like how changed was celestial warlock. And really you could pt every feat, spell, sub class, invocation, race and whatever I'm forgetting into a pretty small book. They just did not produce a ton over the last 10 years. Lots of adventures, settings etc but very little in player options. 5e is radically different than 3e/4e in that regard.

I personally like that each specialist subclass gives you unique features. It'd be pretty boring if all features were similar to the Savant one. I don't want to lose individuality for something like "You get a +1 DC on spells of your school."

I actually think DM content should be a priority. That's by far the hardest thing to do when playing D&D. We don't actually need hordes of player options. Sure, they're fun and all, but I think adventures, settings, etc. are really useful for a lot of DMs. Not saying players shouldn't get new options, but they're not priority, and we definitely don't need to shove everything into the very next book. We can always pick subclasses, feats, etc. from the older books; but once you ran an adventure for your group you can't do it again.
So if someone wanted to create a Necro wizard, how would it go about it now with just the new handbook?
Just play the 2014 Subclass with the 2024 base class (move the 2nd lvl feature to 3rd, rest is the same) -> this applies with any subclass not updated actually.
- For wizards theres just one interesting catch: play with the 2024 savant feature in the specialist subclasses (replace school with necromancy in this case) its just better/more usefull/thematic than the old one.
In Beyond you have to check which classes are supported (they will all be eventually) since some things don't work yet (look in the feedback forum).

my suspiscion is that they set aside some very popular character concepts like necromancer so that they could sell them in a later book. Necromancer is a core staple of fantasy lore, but no one dreams of being an abjurationist - yet that made the cut?

I think necro will come, but for a price.
Its fine as long they make it easy to play with a horde or something like it which is the real touch of a Necromancer and they should add corpse explosion.
honestly, the "big book" is more on paper than in practice. Unless your dm is intentionally giving the wizard free spells, sorcerers will have similar numbers of spells as a wizard until 6-8 or higher. The main difference is wizards having a few more lvl 1 spells (but not 2nd -4th lvl). After lvl 8 or so most games stop anyways, so wizards don't actually have any advantage over sorcerers in spells available. However sorcerers do because they can cast every spell they know - thus sorcerers actually have MORE real utility than the wizard does
This is a legacy thing. Wizards gain four spells per spell level (and a fifth from the 2025 subclasses)
Under pre-Tasha's rules Sorcerers gained two spells per spell level with none from their subclasses
Tasha's and three out of four 2024 subclasses gain two additional spells per spell level (that are fixed rather than flexible)
Under 2024 rules the sorcerer base class gains three spells per spell level for a total of five
The only thing keeping the wizard in play is that they have better spells. If you want to be a blast mage play a sorcerer, but they are light on utility spells and lack summons.
Don’t forget you can play any legacy or expanded subclass with the 2024 main class as long as it wasn’t updated. So you can play a Necromancer right now using the 2024 base and the 2014 subclass. It will work just fine.
I just find the so Feature lacking and boring. Other Full Spell casters got a lot of small features to make them interesting.
Yeah, I agree. Wizards don't really get many interesting features. Except maybe ritual casting from the spell book. Instead they get a massive spell list, a lot of spells known, a lot of exclusive spells. But yeah, I also don't find it interesting. I just don't think they need a boost without getting a nerf too.
Specialist Wizards get all kinds of cool stuff. Portent, Illusory Reslity, Abjurer Ward, many of the most powerful features in the game come from school features.

All of those are subclass features, which is exactly my point. If all you can think of when giving examples of cool stuff is subclass features, that means the core class is lacking in that department. And that's how they're designed, nothing wrong with that.
