Hi all, I recently signed my sons and I up for a set of 3 D&D Adventurers League sessions at gen con. What I didn’t realize was it was for tier 2 characters. I planned our whole schedule around these events, so I’m now needing to get a few AL tier 2 characters. Can I just simply run a few adventures off the new Ghosts of Saltmarsh campaign with a basic fighter and a basic ranger until they level to 5 and have those be legit characters to show up with? I know from what I read that those characters must use the point buy system (no rolling) for their stats upon creation. Is there anything else that is required? Also, how about equipment? If they only get stuff from the campaign rewards and purchase what they can afford in that campaign is that legit for using the characters?
Any help and advice is much appreciated. Times running short and I gotta get them adventuring. Thanks!
For convention play, it will be just fine to generate some Tier 2 characters for you and your kids to use. As long as the characters follow AL creation guidelines, nobody there is going to care if they were "fresh of the printer" or ground up through various AL adventures since level 1. I say this being a person who runs AL games for local stores and conventions.
For your characters, I would suggest:
Use the Standard Stat Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8).
Use the PHB+1 rule for class/race/feats/features.
You likely won't need any magic items for the convention adventures. If you feel you do, maybe a +1 weapon or something simple.
The main thing that underpins D&D AL is that everybody is playing characters built with the same rules and expectations. As long as the characters you use conform to AL standards, you will be fine.

Alternatively, depending on your DM and tablemates, it may get real awkward when you get asked about your character's play history. It never feels good to put in time and effort (even the small amount needed to reach T2) and have folks roll up and claim spots who haven't even read the AL rules yet.
You can make it to Tier 2 in 12 hours of play by reaching Level 4 and then using 25 days of downtime to "Catch Up" to level 5. This keeps everything on the up and up, and it gives the three of you enough time to become familiar with how AL works differently from your usual 5e play.

Thanks. Figured it shouldn’t be a big deal since all we will use characters for is these few sessions.

For reference, here's a link to the current Adventurers League Player's Guide (v 8.2), everything you need to get started is in there: https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/ALPGv82.pdf
However you choose to go about it, I hope the three of you have a good time as part of the AL experience.
