Really sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place, just starting to get into dnd with some friends and was wondering if anyone does sketches of characters.
Just looking for something simple and free as I have the artistic talent of a baby elephant.
I do understand that people spend allot of time on these things so if the answer is no one does these things I totally agree.
As it turns out, I am free to do sketches. Yes, I'll do it for free! Currently trying to buff out a new portfolio, and I'll be doing character art here for awhile until it's complete. If you're still interested, then please give me a complete background of your character and be as detailed as possible. :)
I'll post a link here to a folder of character art across the years so as to give you an idea about the range of styles and realism I enjoy doing. May take a good hour to compile them! I'll edit this comment once I have it done.
Thank you for your time, i took a look at your work its really good, and though i am personally afraid of dogs that is truly amazing.
Please take your time i am very happy to have your interest :)
My Character is a Hill Dwarf Grave Cleric,
I am going with a lost my village / become Van Helsing image. So lots of black, leather and cloak lol.
Bald, though i would also be down to have a Van helsing style black hat.
White beard, plats or not i will leave to your eye.
Left Eye is covered with a black leather patch which has a large ruby gem inset - Think Beric from Game of thrones rather than pirate.
Left arm is skeleton up to the elbow but is covered in a glove going all the way up to the shoulder, right arm does not have a glove.
Weapons are a war hammer and battle axe, also carries a crossbow. I like the idea of a belt going over my chest with bolts or vials.
I will put the back story underneath just to give you insite to my thinking. Please feel free to just do head or a full body, i appreciate anything you can do.
Meldal Ruby-Eye
Presiding over my small village, one evening a cry goes out for a missing child Tresa, I summon all the able adults to help search the surrounding hills. After spending hours searching with no luck we return to the village. As we approach there are no lights, no people, no noise. A light appears in my temple and as we all turned to look a Demon - black and red 10ft tall appears... no words no gloating it just starts to laugh. I reach for my amulet to start casting a spell and as I do so, the remains of my village people, old, young, women, men burst through the temple doors. They are all undead, no eyes slashed bodies and they move with inhuman speed. Attacking the families who had been searching I strike out with spell after spell but they keep coming and my friends keep falling. Suddenly with divine light filling me I cast down all the undead, the buildings around me burst into flames. The only ones standing are the demon and Tresa at his side... He looks at me and laughs once more as he vanishes with her. The spell I used to purge the undead has left my left arm in an undead state and my left eye corrupted. Though unable to hurt me they allow me to sense the presence of the undead when near. I need to destroy all the undead I can find, prevent them spreading and hurting others at any cost, to try and find Tresa and destroy her, the last vestige of my failure to protect my people. The soul of my best friend and father to the girl is bound to her toy bear and neither of us can rest until she does. I need to complete this before I completely lose my mind.
I'm glad to hear you're happy with my old folio, and that you're eager to see Meldal brought to life, though I'm sorry that the wolf triggered some bad memories. 😨
I've taken everything you've written down and will be able to start in the afternoon where I am, in mountain time. If there's more details you'd like to add, including likes and dislikes, ticks and personality traits etc etc, feel free to edit your last post or include them in a new one. More is better in this case!
When I'm done with the sketch, I'll post it here at the bottom of this comment to hear your thoughts on it before I start to finalize it. There's no rush on my end, so please take your time at this part of the process to further shape it into what you'd like. After this it may very well be finished within a few days at the most, since you've said you'd prefer something simple.
Thanks again. If possible a cigarette or cigar end in the mouth if you think that looks right. Also so you know you can't see the eye through the ruby so there's no need to add detail behind the gem. Thanks again.
Please tell me what you think and if there's anything you'd add or replace, and I'll get on it asap. :) For instance, if you'd rather he wield a war hammer instead of the battle axe I roughly drew, that'll be an easy fix. I couldn't exactly fit all three weapons on his body, although I could make his left arm carry the cross bow and put the hammer on the back instead. So he'd basically become a walking armory haha. Stuff like that, plus whichever god or goddess he is in service to- if he has any. I'll make a pendant of said religious figure or etching or anything similar onto his clothing/weapons. Small details are great!
Wow thats amazing, If it isnt too much trouble a warhammer would be awesome and dont worry about the other 2. Other than that its great. truly amazing work. thank you. Blown away.
I'm happy you like it so far! You're too kind though. Alrighty, I'll swap it the axe for a hammer. It'll be done in a few days, so sit tight- and if there's other adjustments that pop into your mind then please let me know.
Here it is. I hope you like this sketch, I've kept it simple but also couldn't resist a little detail here and there. He was fun to work on, and I learned a few new things about hammers in the process. :)
Behold, Meldal Ruby-Eye, a Hill Dwarf Grave Cleric. Will he find the demon and his prisoner? Will Meldal exact his vengeance, or will he find that the circumstances of his village's demise were far more complicated than he had first assumed? Could he ever trust a demon after the deaths of his neighbors that stain his memories? Will he have a choice? We shall see, next time, on D&D.
I am completely blown away. Thank you so much. It's well beyond my expectations. Thank you.
I will definitely let others know about your work. I'm sorry I don't have the means to repay you. I know you did this for free but it's well beyond that. Thank you.
Hey, no worries! You're very welcome. Don't feel bad about free art, everyone needs to get their characters done somewhere and doing it this way benefits both of us. :)
I'm pretty happy that you really like the final sketch, that is the most important thing about doing this kind of art imo. It's why I usually stop a few times along the way (depending on the length of the project) to see if a patron needs to change something and for them to have a hand in how the art is made. Makes for better results! Of course if you're ever interested in something more than a sketch, like a full on painting with or without a background, I'll be open for commissions anytime and you'll find my rates are pretty fair. ^^
I hope to see Meldal again someday, with some new scars and a couple dozen stories attached to his name. Do let me know how his story pans out- and if you have a need for more free sketches with other characters, you'll know where to find me. I am also starting up my brand new Tumblr account, so you can also contact me that way if you prefer.
Until our next meeting, have a good rest of your day!

Hey! Decided to make a new comment instead. Posting a bit later than I wanted to, but ah well.
Here's that Meldal WIP!
