I suspect this is non-negotiable, but i too oppose this.
I resent having to give my data to a 3rd party. My D&D activities and Twitch activities should not be linked. There is no real benefit to the consumer here, only to Curse/Amazon.
I have not yet decided whether or not this will mean i abandon the tool, but it's an option i am keeping open.
Edit: And let me add to my list of concerns the fact that i was asked for a display name when i logged in here but that display name is not appearing here in the forums. This increases my privacy concerns. Let's call it strike 1. Edit 2: Now the screen name is appearing. That doesn't actually make me feel better. Glitchy software plus privacy concerns = strike 2.
I agree, that having to create a twitch account is not the best option. I did it because I believe in the D&D product line and wanted to help with this beta but I think long term they need to have other log in options. If/when they add a mobile app option I would definitely have an option to link to our google/android or Apple ID's for those that will predominately use the app on the phone.
Also A1Quicks makes some very valid points as well about why requiring twitch is not really the best solution. Especially B and C.
We at Curse, are apart of Twitch. All our sites going forward are using Twitch logins, as we start letting people merge their curse accounts into twitch
Curse accounts and Twitch accounts represent a minority of existing players. It's understandable that an account is needed for cross-platform data sharing (mobile to tablet to desktop), but given this will be a system which likely sees the majority of usage on mobile, it makes more sense to have Google integration (as for many Android apps) or social media.
I suspect that failing to provide more common alternatives will limit your userbase.
I don't have a philosophical problem with Twitch logins being necessary, but I found the login/signup page confusing. I thought I was being given the OPTION to login with Twitch OR register. Don't ask. I'm dumb. So, even though I had an existing Twitch account, I now have two.
Amazon is Twitch now and the expectation is no doubt to share features with twitch and D&D beyond so you would need to log in for those features to be active anyways, no sense in not getting that step out of the way at the beginning.
The real question you should be asking is how long will it be before this integrated login starts applying to all Lumberyard games and if there is a D&D beyond link intended with that level of content?
I just had to create a twitch account so I could access this beta. It is ludicrous to require this. I would understand having it as an option, but since I will literally never visit twitch again I just created an account so I can give D&D beyond access to that account so that I can access a beta launch.
I get that Amazon and Google are competitors and that Facebook is easily one as well, but at LEAST give users the ability to create a stand-alone account for D&D Beyond AND the option to connect a Twitch account, not require Twitch.
It makes sense. Eventually there will be paid content available, and of course you would need a login of some sort to access it. Right now in beta, they want log in info to track who is coming in to window shop, and who is actually using it. When it goes live I hope they have the srd "open" so that a login is not required.
I think if players wish to use this resource/tools creating an account with just D&D:B or Twitch is the same thing, creating a new account. So third party concerns don't enter that argument unless your just against a new account in general. From an ease of use stand point I get it cause well who wants another account to remember, but this seems like mostly nitpicking.
The idea, to use your amazon account as a possible login (as suggested by con_la_barba), and the possibility to then link your D&D book purchases with D&D Beyond so you don't have to purchase the same content (albeit this time in digital form) again is something I'd really like to see. I'm not really a fan of having to purchase the same product several times just in different formats. And it's not like D&D books (or any P&P RPG books for that matter) are something you'd define as "cheap".
Curse already has a login why do they need to tie a twitch account to it?
I had to make a twitch account just to post here. But I don't want one. I have never needed one before and I have been using the Curse client for years with my World of Warcraft game.
There is no reason to cram twitch down or throats.
Can you explain the difference between having to sign up for a twitch account versus signing up for a D&D beyond only account? The barrier exists either way, no?
My concern is not about convenience but about the sharing of data. A D&D account means Wizards has the info about me that i choose to give them, including what i do in their app. A twitch account has the data i give to wizards plus what i give to Twitch plus possibly what i give to Curse and Amazon, potentially including everything i do on any of those sites or their affiliates. Even if you assume that they are 100% ethical in how they use/share your data (lol), if any of those places get hacked, then the attackers have an inroad to all the other sites as well.
Meh, it is annoying that I'm going to have to tell my players to create a twitch account. I have a twitch but many of my players aren't going to. We as users have hit login user fatigue so understand that adding ONE MORE f***ing thing for us to have to remember is strait up annoying frankly. Hope this changes.

again, if D&D beyond required its own login, how is this any different?

Yeah, that's a great idea. Use Amazon instead of Twitch and ask for permission to search our order history for books and make it available to us here.
I know this day one of Beta but other account options other than twitch would all this tool to be more accessible to other players.

Having to login to twitch is overall annoying I guess but considering curse merging with twitch it makes a little sense.
I fully agree, a mandatory Twitch account is a major put down. Almost did not make an account pure for that.

I have never used Twitch, and I am not likely to begin doing so. I am happy to link my Google, Amazon, or D&D account to this. That only makes sense.
