I have a Twitch account, and I don't mind using it for this. My players, however.... will likely baulk at the idea of getting a Twitch account and then pass up the program altogether. I already told them all about it and most of them signed up for the beta, but I can only pretend they'll be happy when they find out about this.
I really hope they'll add other login options. My preference would be to use a twitter account, many of my players would probably want to use a Google or Facebook account. At the least a D&DB specific account option should be provided. Twitch just isn't something my players use.
I did not have a twitch account but I did sign up. My problem is that when I go to the twitch website and login there, after login the page goes white and when I refresh the page the same happens. I was just wondering why this happens on the twitch website and not here on the dndbeyond website.
D&D Beyond is being developed by Curse. Curse is owned by Twitch. Twitch is owned by Amazon.
Although I feel for those not wanting to sign-up to sites they perhaps aren't using this fine individual has already pointed out the only piece of information you need for an answer on this particular conundrum. Cross promotion just makes sense, also Critical Role is aired on Twitch and you should all be watching Mercer is all his glory DM Grog and Co. around!
On an added note the site doesn't require you to connect and then make a whole account's worth of info just a username. So the process is incredibly short and not "two sign-ups".
I figure that at some point, there will be other sign-in options, but as this is a Beta, they are using their in-house freely available options for now...
My concern is not about convenience but about the sharing of data. A D&D account means Wizards has the info about me that i choose to give them, including what i do in their app. A twitch account has the data i give to wizards plus what i give to Twitch plus possibly what i give to Curse and Amazon, potentially including everything i do on any of those sites or their affiliates. Even if you assume that they are 100% ethical in how they use/share your data (lol),
D&D Beyond is being pursue by Curse, now owned by Twitch, which is owned by Amazon. So even if they offered a D&D:B specific login, you would still be providing all of that relevant data to all the other three companies: Curse, Twitch, and Amazon. As the EULA and so on on sign up covers the sharing of information with affiliated third parties.
So again a third party share of info is a null factor in this situation as it would happen whether the account you sign up for was Twitch or D&D:B. Although now you bring up a valid point as a D&D licensed property and IP of Wizards, a la Hasbro, just how many more companies have your information? Honestly at this point in time if you have signed up for more than three accounts on online anywhere your information is in circulation somewhere by someone, ethics be damned. That is a tangent though...
The issue here is using a Twitch account as single sign on and the only advantage I see to this is Amazon while it owns Twitch has not assumed control or is not interested in controlling it directly so it has been left as an umbrella entity at this time. Moving forward that may change but currently the lines have been drawn to keep them two separate habitats of media production and online goods.
if any of those places get hacked, then the attackers have an inroad to all the other sites as well.
Any account regardless of location of sign on is a target for hacking, using Amazon or Twitch as a single sign on doesn't make your account more secure it just makes all your accounts accessible via the one sign on of your choice.

I'm somewhat reminded of uPlay by Ubisoft, forced on us for Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs. Has all the features of Steam - shared accounts, social media interaction - but is generally worse and I'm never inclined to update my profile, and I forget the password, and dislike having to use a full account for just one thing when it's industry standard to keep to one of the major core networks of Google, Facebook, or at the least, Twitter for a unified login (with the option of a third party account).
I do feel faintly like I'm trying to be sold Critical Role or its ilk; I can't say I've ever had any interest in watching others enjoy something I'd rather be doing myself.
Well then if Twitch is Developed by CURSE. Then should we not have logged in with our Curse accounts and not twitch?
I agree that it should be login with Android/apple ID. But even logging in with Amazon would have been nice.
We already have too many accounts, or usernames and passwords.
Though the beta has just started I'll give it time to progress. I personally don't use twitch, and I have a twitch, but had to make a fresh one just for here.
So in addition to Amazon, Google, Curse, plus others I now get two(2) Twitch accounts.
Hope this goes well and is a long standing process. Cause otherwise it will be chalked up with all other D&D based things/chats/games/accessories that sit on a shelf collecting dust.
You that are older may remember the old DOS programs, Dungeon Masters Assistant, Vol 1-?.

Curse is owned by Twitch, which is why you're having to log on with Twitch. It makes sense, plus if they let Twitch Prime users have bonus stuff or can use their prime account for a subscription (like how you use it to subscribe to a channel every month), then I'm down for that! I'll milk everything I can from my Twitch Prime/Amazon Prime account!

That is not the industry standard, the fact that there are three options means exactly the opposite there is no standard. And all your doing by using one of the 'core networks' *shudder* is simply giving them permission to further track your usage and interests AND share that information with the party that provide the single sign on option in the first place, yes they still get their pound of flesh too. If you wanted to preserve your privacy you'd need a separate account for every service and even then that would be suspect.
Bottom line folks don't want a new account out of laziness, not privacy protection.
I agree twitch only it's kinda weird. I don't mind as I have an account there, but adding the standard Fb, G+, email would be better. I'm sure they'll get to it eventually.

Not true. Wizards could mandate the use of a D&D account that does not share data with Curse/Twitch/Amazon. This is a choice that they are all collectively making, not a necessity.

I'm not certain you have an understanding of who this D&D:B is being made by or how IP sharing works. As for sign on systems, Wizard/Hasbro dumped the D&D membership system ages ago... so how would they force anyone to use something they don't have?
Last I checked you didn't need an Amazon account to use Twitch. It is more about bringing it there. Things like Critical Roll are already popular and both WotC and Curse/Twitch want to grow that so they simply make more cash.
This is being marketed as a WotC/D&D product that uses Curse technology to make it work. It's not being marketed as a Twitch product that has licensed the D&D intellectual property. I'm happy to check out the former; the latter does not interest me. Forcing me to create a Twitch account seems like a bait & switch, and makes me very, VERY wary of ever having any kind of relationship with Twitch or WotC if that's how they operate. I feel like I'm being sold to Twitch by WotC as per a line item on the contract.
If I get so much as one email from Twitch that is not related to D&D Beyond...I'm out.

I wasn't under the impression it would need one at all. They mention it being an offline tool. Guess I got my hopes up. It's whatever though.

"We've heard from the community and we won't be the ones to split the party." *clicks to the beta phase 1 screen* "Login with your Twitch account"
I generally find railroading is worse than splitting the party.

a Twitch account is fine, but please add an option to login through other places like facebook, twitter, or google! thanks in advance!

Jumping on the Twitch hate-train.
