Thank you for the reply. I do absolutely disagree with your first point though; there are myriad number of magic items that have charges that refresh. But even if that weren't the case, since you can build items in that way, there should be a way to automatically reset. I understand about having a random number of charges reset. Not being a techie myself, I have no idea how complicated a process it would be to fix this issue. In the meantime, my players will continue to manually uncheck the charge boxes and refresh their character sheets. Happy hunting!!
If you can point to a single officially published Magic Item with a charge that resets on a rest please do so.
And homebrew items can be set to recharge at dawn.
Just a little tick box in the Long Rest dialog box, right below the tick box "Reset Maximum HP changes during this rest", which says "Magic items which regain charges at dawn will do so."
At this point I'd go for a "Recharge" button in the inventory item details sidebar. I have an item with 133 charges which resets daily. It's a real pain to click the "+" button 100+ times. Or what I actually do is remove the item, and fetch a new one. :P
Hi I am unsure if is a bug with the current system and if is being left cause thee new sheet may fix it. But I have made a number of Magic Items for my players where I have filled in the charges reset during a long or short rest but when they hit the buttons on their sheet the charges do not reset so they manually have to go through and "recharge" them. Like have I actually done something silly and the system works or is it the system is bugged, help would be appreciated.
I just acquired an Ioun Stone of Reserve in our game. I would like to see the three charges it holds, enter in the spells I choose there, and mark them off when I use them. It's not in the item by default, so I am trying to figure a way to maybe add a custom magic item or action with charges. I don't see any way to create charges or uses for an item or action.
We're never getting an automatic recharge on rests, are we? :( What's the point in even having the "Charge Reset Condition" dropdown menu if it doesn't actually do anything?
As I understand it, whenever they finally get around to creating an interactive DM’s screen it’s sposta have a “Dawn” button to reset those magic items.
Does it matter that they're not supposed to? A number of official items have this reset condition, and there's now no shortage of homebrew items using it, so even if they implement the "correct" way to do this (which they've never seemed in any hurry to do) then they've basically forced themselves to keep the feature no matter what anyway. Plus there's every possibility official content will come out that for whatever reason does recharge on a rest.
All that's required is the same behaviour as for spell slots, limited use actions etc., i.e- loop through magic items with charges and no reset note (as it may specify only d6 regained etc.), reset any with a condition corresponding to the type of rest (short for a short rest, short or long for a long rest).
It's a two minute fix for a nearly 5 year old problem affecting both official and unofficial content, and which already worked prior to the character sheet update (even though the items weren't supposed to have charge resets on rest back then either) meaning it's actually a regression (lost functionality).

I hate to pile on, but please fix this. Having the setting in the item and then having it do nothing is very bad design. I wasted a considerable amount of time trying to get it to work before thinking to come here.
Not only should this have been implemented as a per long rest, or short/long rest. It should have a dawn & dusk reset and a other as far as days/hours go and a roll with or without bonuses at those points also.
A pop-up when it has rolls that reset at dawn or w./e and an auto roll button that you can set to on or off that does it for you or not if you prefer to roll them yourself. Of course it should only appear if it has charges used that exceed the minimum. Example: item has 10 charges and regains 1d6 +4 at dawn......used charges are at 5 it should just auto reset them as the fixed amount of 4 plus the minimum roll of 1 on the d6 =5 If it had 6 charges used then it should allow you to roll or auto roll if that is enabled.
This will never be implemented as the program is broken at its core. Besides they are busy working on some new feature that will be just as broken before they give up as they clearly have here. (As how are you going to tie this sheet to the VTT and make it work, when this is broken to begin with? and if they are not tying them together, what is the point?)
I wish they would just be the best site for what you are used for, "Character sheet item/feature integration" and fix it to its fullest potential, instead of abandoning it for some fruitless (VTT) waste of money that we all know will be more broken then any of the dozens that are already out there.
Extremely long *SIGH*
By the time they come back to fix this "if at all?", someone will have developed a program that far exceeds this one in every way, and everyone will drop this like it was a hot potato and move on.... to leave them scratching their heads in disbelief, questioning or firing those that made the wrong choices during this time.
Just a random bump from April 2024 which by my count is nearly 6 years after this feature/fix was filed. I just read through 5 pages of replies without a single official response and no update. People making great points all around, but the bottom line is the Homebrew Builder is complex and I'm looking at this as a kind of WYSIWYG. If I see that I can have a custom homebrew item reset charges at - Dawn, Short Rest, Long Rest, or anything else, than I and my players expect, the functionality to actually be there without manual input. No, the manual input will not harm us, but as an IT Project Manager I can confidently say that 6 years is too long to ignore your community.
Me too. I have 10 versions trying to fix this. DnDB seems to only care to give us partially functional features. Just look at the encounter builder as an example. It makes me laugh when they talk about their new VTT, and then I get annoyed.

Bump. Dear developers, it is now 2022. The original bug report (you then argued was a feature request) has been filed in 2018.
When can we expect a fix for magic items automatically adding a specified number of charges after short/long rests?
Thanks
Fine. Magic items don't reset on a long rest.
Many items, as you mention, reset at dawn. https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items?filter-has-charges=t
And homebrew items can be set to recharge at dawn.

You cannot make it with a custom action, you have to make it as a homebrew.

Bump! I have been trying to figure out if I was doing something wrong but it just isn't allowed.
Well 2022 is almost over and this is still a problem. I hope to see magic item recovering charges on short rest in 2023.
Don’t count on it, magic items aren’t supposed to have charges that reset on rests. Please see the Homebrew Items & Equipment FAQ #4: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/131411-a-homebrewers-how-to-faq).

Bump. developers, please add this already! omg im so frustrated about this. its been 5 years since this post was made and they've still done nothing.

This would be a nice "fix." In the meantime, I just made the item abilities I needed into feats, which do reset on short or long rests.

This is a fix that should have been addressed long ago. I have been holding off on buying new content until this is addressed.
This issue still plagues me. Pain, suffering, etc....
I really thought the entire time I was doing something wrong
Still waiting
