I was helping a friend create his new character on DnD Beyond and he did the Human Variant as his species. He took Magic Initiate (Druid) as his feat. When selecting his spells, Thorn Whip did not appear in the available options.
We made a custom action to put it in there but it ended up adding extra modifiers that shouldn't be there. It was quite a hassle.
Why isn't Thorn Whip in that spell list to select from for that feat? It should be right?
Has anyone else encountered this error and have a fix?
For Context: I do not have a Campaign set up through DnD Beyond. He is just using the website for his character sheet.
Thorn whip is not in the free rules for either 2014 or 2024. If he doesn't own the relevant book, and isn't making his character in a campaign where it's being shared, then he won't have access.
Is there a reason why the spell is not in there while SO many others are?
He owns the books. The character has already been made, if I create a campaign, can he add that character to the campaign and then retroactively go back and add the spell? Or would he have to make the character over again from the start by joining the campaign?

Just a case of which spells are SRD and which are not. Similar to how some subclasses are free but others are not.
Basic Rules is D&D's way to let people dip their toes in without making a money investment. The hope being that people try it, like it, and then spend money for more.

They keep some of them out to encourage people to buy the books, instead of playing from the free rules.
For one spell, it's not hard to use the homebrew tools to add it.

Yes, he can add the character to the campaign, and if somebody in the campaign has a master subscription and turns on sharing, then any books anyone in it owns are shared within the campaign, and he could add the spell once the character is in the campaign.(if somebody playing has the book.)
This made me do a little test and I think your friend is adding the wrong Magic Initiate (Druid).
I tested this on one of my characters. When I added the Core Rules Magic Initiate (Druid) I couldn't add Thorn Whip because the 5.5 feat doesn't allow 5.0 spells to be chosen. But when I scrolled down and added the Legacy Magic Initiate (Druid) I was able to scroll down past the Core and Expanded Rules into the Legacy spells and then I could add Thorn Whip.

Just to be clear, does he own them in physical form or on DnDBeyond?
This is a signature. It was a simple signature. But it has been upgraded.
