Unlike others in the "content issues" thread, i had no problem downloading everything to my iOS device (iOS 11.2, d&d beyond ver 1.0.0.17).
When I open any of the compendium or adventure books I have, I can drill down through the table of contents to any item, that's fine.
However, for some reason, on just the player's handbook, I've gotten into looking at the "Choose a Race" page of the character creation, and at the top, I don't get "< Back" I only get "< Compendium" to the left of "Player's Handbook." So I can never go back, I can only see that one page, and then can get back to the list of all the compendium items.
I tried deleting the book from the device in the My Account section, but when i download it again, it's stuck atthe same spot.
I really dig the idea of 100% offline usage (if that's what this offers)... and I know this is an alpha product, but right now other than the promise of that, the mobile version of dndbeyond.com is better in every way, from search, to the item, spell, and monster lists, to the character section, to the way the compendium is presented as hyperlinked web pages rather than a linear book only.
I'm excited to keep using it, though. This is the closest Wizards of the Coast has ever come to releasing an official current-edition ebook version, so I'm happy I got to test it.
I'm not a big fan of the scrolling thumbnails—at least as the only option for navigation. On my phone, they look mostly identical: a beige thumbnail with two small lines of text.
Being able to drop directly back to the table of contents with a tap or gesture would be nice.

Visually the thumbnails are great but for practical reasons I think a ToC would be better for navigation.

I had the same problem. I stumbled across the table of contents at the bottom that was the only way I found around it.
Huh... I don't see a table of contents in the iOS app... is it on Android?
Tap on the screen and that will pull up a horizontal sliding table of contents.
OH MAN ok yeah I am a doofus.
