Subject: Clarification Needed on Access to 2014 Content in the D&D Beyond Character Builder After September 3rd
Hello everyone,
I noticed in the recent D&D Beyond changelog that after September 3rd, players will still have access to the 2014 content via the compendium. While it’s great to know that this information will still be available, I’m curious about how this will work specifically with the character builder.
Will the character builder allow us to use the 2014 content directly within its interface, or will we need to manually reference the compendium and input that information ourselves? I’m concerned about whether I’ll have to manually enter all the 2014 information again to create characters using that content. I understand that we have access to the compendium, but is this content also being transferred to the character builder so it can be used seamlessly?
Additionally, I noticed in the D&D Beyond user information and the EULA that there’s mention of content access and how it relates to future updates. It states that users may be able to continue using purchased content, but it’s unclear how this applies to older materials, like the 2014 ruleset, especially within tools like the character builder. If anyone could shed some light on how these policies will affect the usability of this content moving forward, that would be very helpful.
If anyone has any insights or if the D&D Beyond team could provide further clarification, I would really appreciate it!
They very clearly stated that tools (like the character builder) will not have the option to retain the 2014 version of spells, unless there isn't a 2024 version out yet.
So whatever content you own in the 2014 version WILL have to be bought in 2024 as soon as it's released, or you will have differing information between your compendium and character sheets/editor (toolset).
This also means by extension, that if players use the toolset to manage their characters in an active campaign, as soon as a new spell is added to the 2024 spell lists, it's the only version visible to said players. So mid-campaign, your players will suddenly see different spell descriptions for content shared by the group.
This changelog post clearly says that subclasses and races from 2014 will be fully available as Legacy options, there's even a gif animation showing how the page looks like. However, the same post seems to also state, at least from my understading, that even if you have a 2014 subclass, the spells this character have access to will have 2024 description and mechanics. Same thing for any description or tooltip for general rules. Like surprise, area of effect definitons, saving throws, etc.
It is very confusing, and unless the Changelog post is incomplete, the only thing ongoing tables can do to continue using the old rules is to disconsider anything on their DnD Beyond character sheets and use their books to check stuff. Is it even worth keeping a subscription?
I really like 95% of the new rules, but transitioning an existing campaign takes time. Huge oversight from the User Experience point of view.
Honestly I am pretty furious. I bought a lot of content just a little before they started anouncing the 2024 changes. They need to make a way to switch between 2024 to 2014.
Its like we bought something from them then they came to take it back. Many of the spells seem very similar too, I saw three that were basically identical.

Its absolute garbage that people can't use rules THEY PAID FOR to build characters
Agreed. They found another way to make sure you buy the new crap... Back to tabletop, pen and paper...
