that sux, you would think that would be an easy thing to do charges variable = the attuned players Proficiency Bonus variable. I use to be a computer programmer seems like it could be added without issue in my mind at least.
For an item that is attuned to an individual, it make sense. Also, Prof. Bonus in this context would be determined by overall level, not proficiency in a certain skill.

Is there any way to set the amount of charges on a homebrew item to automatically be equal to the attuned characters proficiency bonus?
Nope.

You just have to put into the item description as plain text.
"Sooner or later, your Players are going to smash your railroad into a sandbox."
-Vedexent
"real life is a super high CR."
-OboeLauren
"............anybody got any potatoes? We could drop a potato in each hole an' see which ones get viciously mauled by horrible monsters?"

Maybe in the future. As a DM, I would just make the item multiple times, marking the charges based on prof bonuses as a part of the description.
Beautiful Sword (2 charges), Beautiful Sword (3 charges), Beautiful Sword (4 charges), etc...
Why would a magic item be able to do its thing more often for a more proficient user?
IMHO, makes perfect sense for an item that requires attunement by an Artificer.
this request was in fact due to a custom item that my DM made for my Artificer character
There are already items that have stag unlocks. Making the stage unlock correspond to Proficiency bonus is logical. See: Living loot satchel
